LEICA 10-25mm vs SIGMA 18-35mm

I'm a hybrid-style shooter with a love of photography but a heavy emphasis on cinematic video. My opinions are based on a 10+ year career of producing video content professionally but that doesn't mean my suggestions are always right for every production or individual. There's plenty of room to disagree and approach projects from a variety of different perspectives.

Love my 10-25. Had the Sigma/SB Ultra combo and sold it within a month. Got the 10-25 for $1450 on eBay and haven't looked back. Having the extra range on the wide end is so useful- if I'd kept the Sigma I would have needed to add a Tokina 11-16 or 11-20 or similar. I find manual focusing on the 10-25 much better than the Sigma, and having the option of AF and autoexposure modes/metering is useful too, especially for photos. The Sigma is a great option if you're on a budget and don't mind manual focus, though.

Dp you think the sigma 16mm will be good alternative thatsbway cheaper? For like youtibe videos, vlogs, some lowlight too especially for home setup videos yk. ? Is f1.4 basicly the same as f1.2?

I’ve owned that 10-25mm for about a year now and I love it, I barely use my 25mm and 12mm since I just treat the Leica as half zoom/half prime... The sharpness of this lens is simply beautiful, as well the color rendition and overal image quality , I’ve shot an entire documentary on it and it worked great-also the stepless aperture ring is great for entering buildings when leaving bright outdoors etc

I had almost sworn off buying mft mount lenses after using the 18-35mm/50-100mm Sigma combo(with a speedbooster of course) for the longest time. The 10-25mm is the most recent mft native lense I bought purely because of the pull back focus tab which gives it a linear focusing function. I can now mount this on my GH5S on a Ronin-S running a wireless follow focus with ease. Only thing to note when mounting this on non-Panasonic bodies(eg BMPCC4K) will show fairly obvious barrel distortion from the 10-12mm focal range

Good timing for this video. GH6 isn't likely to be available before another 12 months or so. Many doubts MFT has a future for pro video, and are switching to Sony now. I'd say it's a good time to catch some deals because even if Panasonic will release the successor to GH5S late 2021, I know they will not disapoint.

The results are very surprising, usually the price to performance ratio is not even close to linear. You pay much more for marginal improvement in performance. Thank you! It's good to know that there is a real choice to make with noticeable differences.

The leica 10-25 also seems to be well suited for the Z-Cam E2 M4, I have seen several videos where users experienced problems using the Sigma 18-35/Speed booster combo! After owning Lumix Cameras for 10yrs I finally decided that a (lowlight capable) Standard Zoom was needed for the GH5 and (after due consideration) chose the Sigma 18-35/Viltrox because: I only paid like £700 for both (new via Hong Kong) I can achieve f1.3 (Better than f1.7 in low light) and I only intend using it for video since I already have a G9 (and several Primes) for stills/B cam.

Thanks for video. I have now GH5 with viltrox and sigma18-35... I think to sell gh5 and buy S5. I am going to use S5 only in apsc mode with Sigma18-35 and Sigma MC21 converter.. It will be almost the same focal length as I have now with viltrox, sigma and gh5. Fast lenses to L-mount are very expensive... What do you think? Is a good option to use S35 mode in S5 instead of GH5? I see two reasons to change.. First is 4k50fps in 10bit, and second one it has dual native iso... I excepted the S5 in apsc mode with Sigma 18-35 should be better in lowlight than gh5 with sigma?

I know off topic but I would like it if they could come up with a 12-35 or 12-40 f2. I believe they made an 12-35 f2 on the older four thirds system. Might be 14-35? I wouldn't mind the 10-25 but I'd miss a little extra reach. 10mm sounds awesome though.

10mm is awesome, even noticeably wider than 12mm and having up to 25mm is great. It’s not perfect and more reach would be nice but hey, for a constant f1.7 I’m happy

The Sigma becomes a better deal if you already own the speedbooster. In my case I can use the Sigma on both MFT and Sony APSC so it is a very practical choice. One day I might be able to afford the Leica, but until then, the Sigma is a great choice. We are spoiled for choice with lenses for MFT. And tomorrow, the G9 M2 will be launched and that camera looks like it will really be able to take full advantage of that Leica sharpness.

Only one question about your decision to purchase this lens... what took you so long?! Leica has weather sealing, better zoom ring, equally good manual focus, better af, better macro and on and on. You said it best “the only reason not to buy this is the price” but I tell people all the time it is expensive but not overpriced. It’s great value if you need it.

I think I’ve just been so comfortable with the sigma 18-35 that when people said the 10-25 is good but expensive, I didn’t give it much thought. But after further review and consideration, it’s definitely far superior. The 18-35 + speed booster combo is so ubiquitous but really more people should be opting for the 10-25 instead.

Thinking about selling my Sigma 18-35, while keeping the Viltrox speedbooster for vintage FF lens. That'd cost me around 500 euros to upgrade to the leica 10-25 ...

Still you can use sigma with speed booster and without so I think if manual focus is not a problem you are getting 2 in 1 with no speed booster 35-70 mm and this is also nice focal rangers. For me both lenses are very big. But if I had to choose one sigma should be my choice because of variety in focal ranges.

Sigma is also EF so I can use on my Ursa mini, can’t do that with the Leica, but in terms of pure performance the Leica wins

I’ve been running the Sigma w/ speedbooster for years now. Just picked up the Leica for a steal on eBay. I’ll gladly give up the slightly slower aperture and less reach for how amazing this lens is! AF for photo is as fast as the 42.5 1.2. It’s crazy fast. Brand new Sigma w/ sb is only slightly cheaper than a used Leica (if you look hard enough). Great review! Subscribed.

Hmmmmm the leica loooks really really much better and sharper but 18000 is quite expensive for me. I already have a 15mm leica prime. I probably will buy a 25 leica 1.4 to have the same look but cheaper

It depends how you’re counting...the 10-25 is 1.7 while the 18-35 is 1.8 BUT if you combine it with a speedbooster you get 1.2 so...it depends.

This is my take after watching this video. You mentioned that you don't see many people "talking" about the Leica lens, and now think about this: Most of GH5 users got the camera for Video not for photos, yes you can take photos but the camera is a video beast. This video is comparing the two lenses using pictures not video. There's no way to disagree that for pictures this Leica lens is the winner, but what about video? When you are taking pictures, do you use the same sharpness setting you use when you are shooting video? Actually no, check the most popular video settings on the GH5 and you will see how people will move the sharpness all the way to -5, because you can always add a bit of sharpness in post, and people always complain these lens are way too sharp, and here is where the Sigma shines, it gives you more pleasant video image than a super sharp lens. I think most of the people on the comments that agree with you are taking pictures. For filming videos. As the video shooter these are the advantages I see on the Leica. If the lens have IS you will get DUAL IS, a good thing for video. Auto focus will be better with the Leica, the auto focus with the sigma + speed booster will not be good, but GH5 don't have that good auto focus anyway, so people are really used to film in manual focus. The Leica probably will be lighter. I think the reason you don't see many people "talking" about the the Leica is because when they are talking, they are filming, when whey they are filming ;) they are using the Sigma. All of these being said, I enjoyed the video and I will love to see another version, but this time with video in mind.

Yes you’re definitely right in that a lot of people use the GH5 for video, myself included. Photos is the best way to compare optical quality of a lens that may or may not be what you want for video. However, for me this lens still shines for video. The wider focal length is very helpful. It also being lighter is a benefit, as well as the ability to do better autofocus if needed. The sharpness and detail is just one component but I also like that for photography when I need to take pictures. So overall for me I prefer it, but the sigma is still great and an awesome option if you can’t afford the Leica

I had both and the 10-25 is an amazing lens. You can't go wrong with either one. The only real reason I switched was because of camera balance, the 10-25 just fits perfect and the 18-35 is not easy to balance on stedicams or gimbals. Plus the autofocus is a lot better with a native lens and the 10-25 is a lot more accurate than my ther M4/3 lens. You can find it used, I found mine for $1,400.

Yeah Sigma if you’re tight in budget but if you can afford it, definitely get the Leica
