I LOVE what was said at the end about where the premium compact market is at. I keep thinking the same thing - that if Panasonic were to bring out a new GM series camera, it would sell like CRAZY. I can't justify what those are going for on the used market, but it would be fantastic to have a modern sensor in those. Instead, we got the s9.. Which just ain't it
@martingreenberg8704 ай бұрын
Two things. The S9 is designed and marketed to content creators. You (I) can’t dwell on what this body might have been. We aren’t in the market segment for this camera sadly. There will be no new GM or GX bodies. This is because we want the PDAF sensor. That sensor needs the new engine. Both generate too much heat for these small bodies. In addition, they require more energy so a larger battery is required. The larger battery will make the body larger. The best I can hope for is the S9 body will jettison the full frame sensor and install the Mm43 sensor. I am truly sorry about this. I just purchased backup GX85 & 9 bodies because I love the size and. Weight of these bodies. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
@SamEmilio23 ай бұрын
@@martingreenberg870 oh boy I hope you end up being wrong haha. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what is the case, I just keep thinking "x camera does it, surely they can too". The S9 just feels like such a waste of that design idea. It looks like it's a retro inspired street photography cam, but doesn't operate like one. But as you said, it's the whole "content creator" model.. Which I'm so sick of seeing. Each brand does these cameras that are so so short on features just so they can say they have a cheap model, and they end up being a cam that isn't super great at anything. Maybe once they're in people's hands in the wild it'll turn out they're great, but yeah..

IMHO the D-Lux 8 might not make sense for an upgrade from the D-Lux 7 or the LX100II - but for someone looking for a very small compact with a 24-75mm equivalent zoom it's still a compelling choice: I couldn't find another camera offering a similar combination. It's not cheap (as expected for any Leica), but an used (and old) LX100II is costing $1,050 at mpb or KEH - and it doesn't offer the new perks as the updated CMOS (vs the original MOS), DNG, new processor engine, better focusing, et al - and again, it might not worth the upgrade ... But please tell me what could be a good alternative (by the way, some caution on the used ones - as most of them are also crazy expensive across the board !!)

It's a bit high in price, but all this sort of compact camera are hot right now and a bit high in price. A used Canon G7Xiii on MPB is $1200 right now. In contrast, this has nicer controls, an EVF, and a larger sensor, for $300 more. If you want a top-end fixed-lens compact, right now you have to pay a lot for one. Can you beat it in IQ with something like a used a6600 and Sigma 18-50/2.8 at roughly the same as the G7X? Sure. But it's not a compact anymore. That form factor just costs more right now--demand is high enough and there are fewer models out there.

It doesn’t have to be a mini pro camera, it just needs to for example be as fast as a Fuji X-T30 with the power zoom Fuji has. That would make the little LX100 II / Leica much more appealing.

I would prefer the GX series so it will also have IBIS.

I am not sure why, but watching this video just makes me hope the olympus pen f will have a version 2 lol. Good lens, retro look, good image quality, and its gonna be (hopefully) much cheaper than the leica.

GX-9 is perfect. Leica 15mm lens - perfect. For smaller and lighter, it all just works. Leica D-Lux8 seems overpriced -- not for me to say, and not for me to buy. If it makes the buyer happy, it is all which matters. I am happy with my Panny.

Camera technology has pretty much plateaued. I suspect those who delight in criticising cameras like this are largely just gearheads, avid for the latest minuscule advances, and not so much concerned about the process of actually taking a photograph, let alone making something of it that’s worth looking at. In any event, if you like the way something looks and feels during the process, you’re much more likely to do so.

RX100 VII is $1300. If this camera didn’t have a red dot, what would be the appropriate price relative to the Sony?

Goes to show that the S9 would have been fine, or quite a bit better, for the use case it's intended for (aside from selling higher margin full frame lenses) if it were instead a proper GM10 with an MFT mount or a new GX10 with the G9.ii's sensor package. I'm holding on to my full set of MFT gear for work and play, hoping that a proper GX8.ii or GX10 is released to replace/go with my OM-5/Pen F kit. MFT fits my needs perfectly, was sad that the S9 was, well, an S9 and not a GM10. I have another equally irrelevant bunch of kit to cover the rest of the sensor sizes (Pentax KP, K-1.ii, and 645Z with shelves of lenses from the beginning to current). TBH, I prefer a GX85 with a 20mm f1.7 over this compact. Shame they didn't really put the money into it and release it with a new 20mm f1.7 or f1.4 Leica lens. I've been dreaming of a PanaLeica 20mm for years to match the 25mm f1.4 mark ii's feel, af speed, and at least some weather sealing. Would be sad to see it on a fixed lens system, but that may have been some hope for it to make it to a real MFT mount in the future.

Too many compromises for me. I need a fast camera for street photography, and the slow lens zoom and auto focus limitations leave me wanting!

Panasonic needs to make LX100 III and GX9 II. Put the new 25 MPx sensor and phase detection auto focus in them. That would be awesome

Leica made DLux8, Pentax made a film camera. Smaller manufacturers always care more about "what real users need" versus "what camera geeks want".

LOng in the tooth. I think they should have used 25 MP which is available and better. However...I believe some camerabrands come out with FF cams still in 24 MP but in some (most) reviews I see an explanation how it is not long in the tooth...So what makes this one long in the tooth? I own en LX100II since 10 months and my Em1.2 gets less and less use but yeah for sports or aurorae etcetc it is my cam of course. It is long in the tooth may be, but all newer mFT cams do not convince me to be usefully better for me. For this cam...I dislike the choice of no dedicated exp comp button/wheel. I love the way it is now. And on the price. I got a really as new LX100II in London for 700 quid. Great deal. A collegue of mine who wanted to add something like that to his Panny G9....He just never could get it, not even in the D Lux7 format. So 1500 dollar is surely not too expensive. And no: it is not meant for videographers. So you can test it, but it is clear it is not meant for it at all. Finally I have an Gm5 and I do not find much fun to use , not compared to my LX100II not even close. Never use it. So if there is going to be a GM7 or 10 or whatever, they need to do a lot better. My favourite GM10 would be this cam, can be a bit bigger, with the LX100II buttons, 25 MP sensor and OSPDAF and OLED EVF. Finally did you not test the IBIS? Onthe LX100II that is a lot worse than my EM1.2 and I understand why, but in 2024 one would expect it to be better.

This is why I have 2 Sony a6100’s they have a much larger sensor in a compact body with the fastest autofocus on the market and you can buy them for $500 all day long. The price on this camera is so bad and 17 megapixels lmao. The a6100 has unlimited 4k recording and an audio jack.

So lens and sensor fell "long in the tube" but what would you have changed? I think Leica saw the demand for the D-Lux 7 and that it will sell for a few years strong. Without them having to go R&D a totally new camera (on their own, as Panasonic apparently doesn't want that compact camera business anymore). I don't mind a working camera running for several years. There is a difference between consumer products and professional gear. Consumers use a camera for a decade or even more. What Leica made new: Leica Fotos app integration for example, and better UI *at the same price* as the 7 is just amazing for anyone who would've bought a 7 anyways and now gets a small little Leica.
