This location is.. wow I'm speechless. Compare 35mm and 120, what a great idea. If you have a good lens, 35mm can really do the job. Also the form factor is often forgotten. Medium format is... big, too big often for a daily carry.

I have a Leica MP and a Mamiya 7II and I think I agree mostly with this conclusion. Both are amazing film cameras and I love them dearly, but I tend to reach for the Leica more often than the Mamiya. Maybe it's size, but to me the Mamiya also feels more precious, less sturdy (I haven't snapped off the film-changing-curtain lever yet though-like sooo many other people have ... ) The Mamiya also becomes more unwiedly when you use any other lens than the 65mm and the 80mm, due to the 43mm and the 50mm working better when using the external viewfinders (let's not talk about the 210mm which I suspect is some kind of Mamiya engineer department prank ... ) I love the 50mm and the viewfinder is great, but that's one more piece of fragile glass thingy to worry about ... I've managed to damage the Mamiya once when I used the panoramic adapter (which morphs the 7II into a 35mm XPan alternative ... )-the film advance was damaged somehow. Very scary, until I found a great former professional Mamiya repair person who took the camera apart and fixed it. But ... jesus ... I'm not complaining ... it's such a luxury to be able to use both of these amazing cameras.

Joe first of all, amazing Channel even if you just restarted it. I have a question, you said you overexposed the film for 1 Stop. Does that mean you pulled the film and at the lab you indicated it as 200 instead of 400. Or you just gave it to them and they process it as it was rated (iso400). I am a bit confused about the push and pull thing. I want to recreat that look but don't know how. Would be cool to have a video about that topic. Thanks man keep inspiring us !!!

Im amazed that he got that close to the water with the m6 lol. Anyways, i think that the mamiya is good for certain situations. like i would use it when i have a clear goal of what im shooting because of the 10 shots. This bar/motel reminds me of Stephen Shores work, or William Egglestons work. Plus i love anything with a 60's 70's type vibe.

How exactly do you over expose medium format? (I use a Mamiya RB67 Pro-S)
@carlosgrajeda1986
@carlosgrajeda1986 4 жыл бұрын
Rasheed Ingram overexposing is simply shooting your film as if it were a lower ISO than it actually is. For example when shooting Portra 400, shooting it as if it was ISO 200 would be overexposed by 1 stop, shooting as if it was ISO 100 would be 2 stops overexposed. As you can see by overexposing in the examples from the video, you get a lot more detail in the shadows and none of the shadows actually look dark.
@yosoyadae
@yosoyadae 4 жыл бұрын
@@carlosgrajeda1986 so basically with my Mamiya Rb67 Pro s I would just meter for iso 100 instead of iso 400 and when I take it for development I just say "hey I pulled two stops"?
@carlosgrajeda1986
@carlosgrajeda1986 4 жыл бұрын
Rasheed Ingram you don’t need to tell the lab anything, that’s how it ends up being overexposed, because they will develop it for what the film is rated at. They will develop like normal and your film will be overexposed because you shot it at a lower ISO. Pushing is when you tell your lab, when you shoot at a higher ISO then what the film is rated for, for example shoot Portra 400 at 800 or 1600 iso, that’s when you want to tell the lab to push it a stop or 2 otherwise the photos come out dark because they were not exposed enough. In a situation where you want to overexpose as long as you shot at a lower ISO than what the film is rated, you don’t need to worry about how it is developed, it will be overexposed, the lab will process it normally and you’ll get that overexposed look with more detail in the shadows.
@carlosgrajeda1986
@carlosgrajeda1986 4 жыл бұрын
Rasheed Ingram didn’t meant to confuse you by the long explanation. Long story short, for the overexposed look, shoot the film at a lower ISO then what the film actually is and just get developed like normal.

I see no big differences in these pictures between 2 cameras. If you dont want to print huge photographs for commercial, 35 mm is your choice.
@NJ1810
@NJ1810 4 жыл бұрын
I really enjoyed all of these photos. But I don't understand why we need a direct comparison (in a vs.-format) of two inherently different cameras. Apples and oranges. You should first ask yourself if you want to shoot 35mm or medium format. Then you can start comparing cameras within those formats. A 6x7 negative is more than four times as big as a 35mm negative. If you reached for the Leica more often than the Mamiya because it is smaller and gets more pictures out of a roll of film then you are just choosing 35mm over medium format. By that logic you could have also reached for a Pentax K1000. In the end I think this video is merely a demonstration of two of the most expensive film cameras out there.
