The Leica Mini II isn’t one of those point and shoot cameras with a cult following like the Contax T2 or the Olympus Stylus Epic, but is it a hidden gem? I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and I’m ready to share some thoughts and results from it so far.
I also got to try out a roll of Kentmere 400 for the first time and was pleasantly surprised by it!

The more I watch your videos the more I'm amazed by your talent to talk to a camera. It's so genuine and just feels like you'd be talking to a real person. Only very few people have that talent and I think that is one of the key ingredients for making successful videos that are a treat to watch. Keep it up Matt!

I love Kentmere 400. I took a chance on a 100ft roll, and it plays nicely with Caffenol once I found the right development time. It also goes onto Patterson reels much more nicely than Tmax 400 does, and it's less harsh on fixer.

Man, after watching this I'm going to have to order up some HP5 to try in my old Samsung Maxima. I've never shot black and white film in 35mm, and you've really inspired me to try the old point and shoot out again. I haven't shot that thing since 2006! Thanks for the motivation!

Matt, you said the date imprint does not work. Are you sure it doesn’t need a separate battery? Some of these old film P&S cameras has the date imprint doors as an afterthought, with a separate coin style battery to power it. At 12:06 I almost see what looks like a battery polarity schematic to the right of the film pressure plate. I’m guessing that panel lifts off to reveal the battery. I see a corresponding bulge on the back of the film door which makes me further believe there is a battery in there. Cheers

Hey Matt, thanks for another great video. I can't hold a candle to you in regards to photography, but I can offer some advice regarding "buzzing your head." I've been cutting my own hair with clippers for about 20 years and I always go in the backyard to do it. It would take me a week to clean up if I did it in the bathroom. On another note, do you have any tips for bulk loading and where to get film canisters?

Nice little camera - I believe it was made by Minolta (called a 'Riva Mini'), though I think you can find it branded by Panasonic too...you may want to try and find a Leica AF-C1 too - similarly made by Minolta, but with a tele option. They're pretty cheap, and I took one to Greece and got some amazing images. Thanks for posting!

I was wondering how it would look like to shoot anamorphic on film and get ratios like hasseblad xpan would get you. it would be kinda tricky with the m6 but with an slr it should be doable. I unfortunately dont have any anamorphic lenses or know anyone who has but maybe you do? it would sure make an interesting video. You can show how all the flares and bokeh look on film and the image ratio would be a challenge to nail the mise en cadre

Hi Matt, I found a Leica Mini II on a market. The battery is working, but... the lens is not zooming. There is no roll in it, perhaps that is the problem (but I don't want to loose a film if it turns out to be broken). So I hope you can tell me if the zoom is broken, or that it just needs a film...? Thanking you in advance :)

Hi beginner here. Is this the best 35mm camera to carry around 24/7? What camera provides the best quality shots, in the most portable size? I see mention of two other point and shoots in the description, Contax and Olympus. How do these compare? I am willing to shell money for the best quality portable camera, heavy emphasis on portability.

I bulk load my film and use it on my olympus stylus epic, and my reloadable cassettes are the black painted metal ones, so i looked up the DX pattern for 1600 speed film, and marked it on the cassettes and scratched the black paint off with the edge of some scissors, and now it works perfectly in my olympus.
@dariabirk
@dariabirk 6 жыл бұрын
another way you could do it is to take the metal cassette and scratch the entire area off so it’s bare metal, and then black out some areas around and in the DX code are with a paint marker (it has to be a marker with a thick paint like the ones you have to pump, sharpies won’t work) and then the DX code should work. There are probably much better ways to do this, but this is what has worked for me.
@dariabirk
@dariabirk 6 жыл бұрын
another tip with using bulk-loaded film in a point and shoot is to make sure the leader you cut on the rolls of film is a smooth, rounded cut so that the film cannot tear apart. It’s rare that the camera will actually tear off the leader or tear the film, but it did happen to me once.

Nothing can beat Olympus Mju-ii (Stylus Epic) at this range: size/price/35mm F2.8 optics and its performance/spot metering existing. Speaking of true BW film, I have prepared labels with desirable speed in order to fake it for DX reader for the cam. Also, the algorithm of Stylus Epic is amazing too, since it tries to keep an aperture to be wide open as long as you reach the maximum shutter speed. Which is very good for portraiture.

@stoffi
@stoffi 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the Mju-II is a really, really nice camera overall, but the slow and laggy Yashica T4 and T5 have that 0.5% edge over it in terms of image quality. It's mostly the colors. The Olympus has this inherent blueish/magenta tint, whereas the Yashicas are more neutral. The Mju-II is such a sleek and well-designed camera though; with a much snappier shutter actuation, so that slight loss in image quality compared to the Yashicas is totally fine with me, when I want to bring along a small profile and seriously competent camera. It's sexy as hell too!

Had one and passed it on to someone who is now interstate. They can't seem to get the film loaded at all. Local photo shop couldn't help. I only ever shot one film - nice, but I don't shoot much film now. I can't remember any issues loading the film - maybe I was lucky. Might have to send a replacement camera unless she can get it sorted.

@Frantixj

@@alskarmode keeps the film and emulsion on it fresh, prevents it from fading and makes it possible to store it for years even after it's expiration date. That's why there's a lot of expired film being sold on ebay etc. If the film was in the fridge the whole time it's safe to get it and shoot normally. If not and it was kept, say, in a box in the attic, higher temperatures may have had impact on the emulsion and the photos can come out faded, smudgy etc. Think of film as a very lasting yoghurt :P
