I love monochrome and if I could afford the new Q2 Monochrome I would certainly buy it despite the fact that I own a Q2, the latter being my most used camera daily. I don't need the new Monochrome but I would love one. And before any comments about overprice or any other negative remarks, I believe people should spend their money how they wish, drink, smokes, fast cars etc. I know what I want.

Thank you for this review. I started my photographic journey in the early 1970's using Nikon equipment (although it has always been a dream to own a Leica). Because of the cost and the fact that I could develop my own film and prints, I chose to shoot in Black & White. To my amazement I was totally enthralled with the medium. The fact that I could focus on textures, shadows and the like truly captured my imagination. I developed a philosophy that colour actually got in the way of making photographs. It has taken a concerted effort for me to adopt digital photography, but I must say that this video has re-ignited my passion for B&W photography and I wish to thank you for that. I may just have to invest in this Leica.

I purchased a Q2 and l liked it so much that I bought a Q3 to have the swing out monitor and the 60MP sensor. It didn’t take long before I realized, my Q2 is just going to stay in the box for a long time. Then I realized I could trade that in for a Monochrom. Very happy with that decision. Will use both of those cameras.

I absolutely love my Q2, and I’ve always wanted a monochrom. I just got the Hasselblad 907X, and yet now I find myself already contemplating selling the 907X so I can get the Q2 Monochrom. Do I need it, in addition to my “normal” Q2 and my SL2? Nope, no way, no how, not at all. Do I want it? Yes!!

I just ordered one today. It was an "I just want it" buy. But I can definitely see it being handy when there's poor lighting, or if I don't want to be super conspicuous. Some of my favorite pictures I've ever taken were monochrome.

To my knowledge, nobody makes the camera I want. I started in BW in ‘69. I soon gravitated to The Zone System, Kodak Professional 320, and the A. Pentax 6x7. Today, I love the B&W tonal manipulation possible when shooting in color and adjusting the color sliders in monochrome view. But what I really want, is the ability to make those same types of B&W tonal adjustments of the colors in camera in B&W while composing the shot! That would be putting The Zone System on steroids. Being able to make these adjustments in real time while seeing the scene in front of you would make all the difference! Imagine what Ansel might of done if he had had the darkroom in his camera! Actually, that’s beyond my meager imagination. Fortunately for us, he did have a photoshop-lab in his head when he took the shot.

Brilliant! And I think the manufacturers have this in mind; it's essentially what's done with Digital Cine cameras, where the RAW image is timed, painted and processed in real time with a LUT (look up table) that is inserted to the monitor output and/or VF & Displays and the metadata of the setup inserted into the picture

You will be waiting a long time - as it aint gonna happen. Fujifilm Rep say this: Which format do we chose? XE? XF? X100? X? XPro? GFX? and if GFX which 1? 50 or 100? - and that is why we don't do it"

Great review. The Q2 monochrome does not have three different pixels recording red, blue and green. Each pixel has the same properties which is why you get amazing tonality that you do not get when converting a colour shot to b&w. THIS is the reason to have a Q2. There are a few older digital cameras that assigned all pixels to b&w when switched to black and white mode. Almost impossible to work out which cameras have this capability. The Nikon Coolpix 8400 (small sensor) has this capability. Pick one up on eBay for less than $100. Check out the image quality! Meanwhile the Leica Monochrome cameras are today’s must-have monochromes. PS I bought a Q2 on the basis of your earlier reviews. I Shotter it almost exclusively on f1.7. Hate the positioning of the thumb-wheel too stiff and awkward. Might have to follow Raymond and get a hand grip so I can use that wheel quickly and easily. Wish it had a flippy screen like my awesome Fuji cameras. Love your KZbin channel. Barry (UK)

As polished and as niche as the Monochrom is, I still can't get my mind to cope with not having colour film sim as an option. I love my Q2, where the colours are sublime and the high contrast B&W images it produces (SooC) are just as pleasing.

Received my Leica q2 Monochrom today after exchanging my color leica q2.. battery is on charge. Cant wait to start using it. In my opinion, this is in a different league, its a beautiful camera, expensive but worth every penny.

Many people spend a lot on a car or cars - if one is truly committed to B&W photography, then - anyone who is "comfortably well off" (possibly a dwindling number with rising energy costs, etc) - just needs to get their priorities right and economize on the type of car they drive - and splash out on this camera ! I do traditional "wet" B& W film photography and digital color but am seriously tempted by this camera - yes - $6000 is probably an excessive price (Leica have never sold themselves cheap) but - back to cars - are you going to be dwelling on having spent $6000 on this camera - once 2 or 3 years have passed in which you've enjoyed a truly rewarding photographic experience with it ?

Do you have to use a sturdy tripod to minimize the vibration of the mirror/shutter of Pentax 67?

@@robertvarner9519 I still used Bogen (Manfrotto) 3246 for video, a very bulky and heavy tripod. Most of time I used a tripod for my Lumix S1R, as I found its IBIS was not as good as that from my Olympus OM-D E-M1.2.

Your review helped me 'pull the trigger' and I just ordered mine from B&H. I've always loved 'bnw' but have always struggled with doing it in post. Back when I had more functional joints, I shot on Ilford and had a few great shots out of the camera (old Canon EOS 750). I already have the CL and the SL2, so once more, into the breach!

Please be aware that monochrome files needs extensive editing othering it will look flat somehow so give it time and enjoy it after all

I initially bought the Q2 then the Q2M with the intention of selling the Q2 then buying an Leica M10 to do color but after thinking about it I decided to just keep the Q2 since it would serve the purpose as well or even, in some situations, better than an M.

Impressive. As graphic designer and B&W shooter I’d love to own one of these, but $ 6000, if I’m not mistaken, is way beyond reason, although the heart wants it badly. Ergonomics, the overall design including the interface and the performance is overwhelming. Leaves me wondering why other brands, which claim to be top notch, don’t deliver as well. Thanks for reviewing it for us.

I would miss the ability in post shoot image processing to adjust specific colours during conversion to B&W. Without the ability to use colour information during conversion and then image refinement I would feel restricted

I shot with the Q2 Monochrom today. It was my first time with this camera. My main cameras include the Sony A9, Fujifilm X100V, and Canon 5D Mark III. I have always wanted to shoot black and white. I have been toying with the Acros setting in my Fujifilm X100V and ok with it. But on my first shoot with the Q2 Monochrom, I am pretty sure this will be the way to go. I may end up with a both Q2s in the future. I always your videos, and this one was outstanding. Thanks!

Great review, i now have a q2 Monochrom, i changed my color q2 for it. Im yet to properly use it. I do sometimes miss the q2 color so I compromised and bought an additional Sony A7 Riii a. Seems like a good balance. Both are excellent cameras but there's something very special and unique in owning a pure Monochrom camera. It looks beautiful, my only gripe is the battery, maybe one day leica will produce a better lasting battery for the q2/Monochrom. Should i use the evf or lcd to save battery?

I once owned the original M Monochrom camera. I shot with this for about six months. Initially I thought I would like shooting monochrome. However what owning that camera taught me was that I am a color person. To pass the time during covid I have been reviewing (and deleting) digital photos I've taken over the past 22 years (since I bough my first digital Apple QuickTake camera). I've found I converted far less than 1% of images to b&w. Case closed on b&w for me. However, a regular Q2 is definitely on my horizon. Thanks for your continuing well done reviews.

My first thought was "Why choose a 28mm lens? Isn't a 50mm or maybe even 35mm the more classic choice?" But 28mm is probably the most useful choice with a fixed lens (you can always crop from there), and going to an interchangeable lens probably loses you your AF capability. I like the fact that they put a sepia option in there. One thing they might have done or consider adding is a digital filter that makes the sensor see the world with an orthochromatic viewpoint.

Yes, with this camera, the 28mm lens is not a hindrance. I do have a Fujifilm X100V as well, which has an equivalent focal length of 35mm, which is also fun. :)

I think Leica got some distinct signature b&w from all other cameras out there. I use high contrast b&w mode most of the time when using Q or Q2. Nice review.

A very informative video, as always. You can switch the Q2 to Monochrome including the view finder. I am fully aware that the conversion is for the JPEG files only and the Raw is still in colour. Since you tested the Q2M, does the end result show a noticeable difference between the Q2 in Monochrome setting and the Q2M to justify the extra purchase? I assume if you shoot a lot in low light , the Q2M will produce more detailed and less noisy pictures. But what is your experience with the results under "normal" light conditions?

Hi! In my opinion, you will not see difference between Q2 and Q2M on social media we use today, for that it would be a total waste of money and efford. You would have to print out your images large to get the full potential of the Q2M, already with the Q2 converted in to B&W, it is almost useless on medias. The images are for galleries and large prints. ;)

Great review! I also have the Q2 and would love to have the Q2 Monochrome. Just to be picky: Leica should call it Q2 Achromat rather than Monochrome. Monochrome means able to pick up one colour. Achromat means just B&W....

I’m definitely planning on picking up the Q2Mono in the future. I have been using Sony and Fujifilm and have always gravitated to B&W photography. I love using my XT-5and X100VI with Acros film simulation and a couple other b&w film recipes. Did you get the Q2 Mono?

The differences with the Monochrom variant are that the ISO range is extended (you can use it in even darker environments and achieve usable results), and there is increased clarity. You can also do the color toning in-camera. :)

Fixed lens, monochrome only: you hit the nail on the head when you said it is a "niche within a niche". There is a reason why other manufacturers aren't falling over themselves to supply monochrome cameras. Ninety percent of my work is in colour, so for me converting to B&W in post makes far more sense. I think I have more control over how photographs render in monochrome that way, too (one would need to use coloured filters on the Q2 Monochrome, but in post I can treat each colour differently to get the desired shade of grey). Also, I don't print gallery sized photographs, so the resolution I get from a normal camera is more than good enough for my needs. I get that with no interpolation from a Bayer filter the resolution must be awesome, and in the hands of a skilled photographer, it will produce absolutely stunning prints.

As you say this is a masterpiece but it is a bargain as well. How can that be? Well it seems to me to be the most amazing industrial design with a high iso capable sensor that, like the M10 mono, allows you to use it in all lights at shutter speeds high enough to render the lack of ibis irrelevant, with a high enough pixel count to make the digital zoom entirely usable for all normal uses and with a stunning macro capability as well. It can therefore for most of us, most of the time replace a whole bag of camera gear which would in aggregate cost far more and do so in a way that will fit in a small Billingham bag. I currently use a OM3ti and I think I finally found a true digital competitor. Mark btw you will buy one, you know you will

Have you done a comparison between a standard Q2 RAW file converted into B/W in post processing, when compared to a Q2 Monochrome RAW file straight out of the Q2 Mono? I own the Q2 (and love the IQ) but I'd find it really difficult to spend the same amount of cash again to buy another version just for monochrome work? With the Mono Q2, I appreciate that every photosite is not subjected to a Bayer filter that sits above it, which effectively (I assume) increases the granularity of the image spectacularly - but unless you are planning on super crops, is that extra granularity actually visible on a screen, when certain amounts of pixel dumping occurs due to screen display limitations? In which case the Mono Q2 (for me) has a massive printing capability advantage (over the original Q2) or a massive cropping capability - what's your view?

I wonder about the difference in sharpness, noise and tonality of the Q2 Monochrome vs the ‚normal‘ Q2 when using the built-in monochrome ‚film simulation‘. I am curious if you did some testing 🤓 The results could save me from being seduced... Nice video, by the way :)

I would image it to be tons better straight out of camera, the Q2 has a bayer colour array sensor, whereas the Monochrome has a specific mono sensor built from the ground up. In the end it is how good we are at processing a colour image to monochrome. As much as I would love the new Monochrome I'm happy with my Q2, and would still choose it again against the new Q2M, best of both worlds. Two very different cameras altogether.

Yes there is for sure but it depends on how you use the camera example if silhouette and high contrast scenes where details not really matters q2 is fantastic however to get the monochrome vibes and extra sharpness as well the fantastic raw files in addition to the iso performance q2m is definitely better

Yes as a Q2 shooter I am tempted by the Q2 monochrome and like you, I’d like both. Can I afford it? Probably not. But compared with the costs of the M10 monochrome, the mark-up on the Q2 is almost reasonable. Definitely tempted..

It's not really a markup, but rather a discount for giving up interchangeable lenses. I think the amortization comes with using it as your modern 28mm lens, thus saving about the price of admission vs a Summicron-SL28 (when it finally appears), if you need color use a 24 or 35 on the M or SL

I own and shoot the original Q and the CL with a few lenses. I often shoot the Q in RAW but change the JPG saturation setting to Monochrome so that I see the world in B&W. Quite satisfying. For now, the Q2 nd the Q2 Mono are beyond my wallet's reach. :-)

Love you video’s. Long time viewer, first time caller. I just love you thoughts behind hardware and photography in general. I’m am old B&W film shooter (Kodak Tri-x Plus-x) on a Nikon FM. Fast forward to today I’m shooting with a Nikon Z-50 and kit lens (16-50mm) with an almost permanent set-up in monochrome. Whenever I do venture into color sometimes I wonder what that photo would have looked like in B&W? I drool every time I watch a Leica Q2 video and now I really want this camera monochrome Q2. Although you touched on this, I'm not sure you gave an answer. Even with all the post processing of an identically composed image ( I actually quite enjoy this process), taken with the Q2 and Q2 monochrome, is the eventual B&W image from the Q2 anywhere near the quality as its monochrome version? I've a serious decision to make 😊

Thanks a lot for this very interesting video about Leica Q Monochrom. I love black and white ... and use my Leica Q for this, converting coloured files in post-production with PS. My question: how you manage the post-production with raw files from Leica Q M ? What specifications especially for this camera ? I would like to buy one, but I cannot answer to this interrogation. I can’t afford a Leica but I’ve been motivated to set my cameras to monochrome, I know it’s not the same as a dedicated monochrome sensor but I probably can’t tell the difference.

Is the sensor stitched on Q2 m ? because a line shows up on long exposures with tonal difference on left and right side. It's only on long exposures and with some tonal adjustments in Post.

Does this have focus peaking capability? I love the EVF, but for narrow DOF focus peaking would be nice.

Hi SnapChick, I wanted ask, how does the camera perform in low ISO settings? Assuming its in b&w, I'd assume there'd be some clipping in low light or maybe even well lit photos. Thank you so much for your review.

The only BIG differences is esthetic and the High ISO results. Other than that I’ve seen some real life exemple of both Q2 and Q2M and the difference is so thin than 99% could not tell a difference. If you want to see in B&W in your EVF just set your Q2 to B&W. For 2000€ more you’ve got an M10M (if you already got optics) which has far more possibilities.

Didn't feel like the need to upgrade from my Q to Q2. But now this is not going to be just upgrade, it is going to be an extra. 2 Qs instead of a Q2. 🤣
