I have had my R8 for a while now with several rolls through it, but I never knew about the feature of checking flash exposure with the DOF preview lever! Thanks for that! I will definitely have to explore that more. I may even break down and get a Leica flash ($$$). Thanks again.

The contax rts iii also has the flash metering feature you mentioned. The feature also works with any flash not just contax brand flashes.

Looking at design it's like Contax RX vs Contax AX (where it was somehow justified by specific "auto-focus" system)

The best flashgun for Leica R8 are the Metz brand with SCA 3501/2 adapter. I own one Metz 32MZ-3 with SCA adapter for Leica who works flawless.
