Ohhhh, as a thick haired girl I can tell you that thick hair doesn’t equal root volume - my hair is heavy and, therefore, the roots end up sad and flat without lots of help. :( But, otherwise, I’ve learned to be grateful for my thick hair... most of the time.

I own both types of the product, what I find is with the waffle iron you can just stick it in your hair and freestyle clamping. But with the traditional crimper you have to stretch your hair first everytime you clamp. I prefer the waffle one slightly more as require less skill and time to get a nice result. Also there are other branding of the waffle iron on various sales platform online :)

I’ve been doing this for a few years with a little travel crimper I found at TJMaxx. Adds just the right amount of volume at the roots. Otherwise my hair is so super flat 😞
