I agree 100%. Here is what I liked so much about "Lasting Impressions" -- First, the episode takes us into a very subtle exploration of how it is that we experience on another and more importantly what it is that makes us feel connected to each other. In short, who are we and what do we become long after we're gone. What is it that matters about us. "Lasting Impressions" tackles some extraordinary profound human questions within the context of Gordon's pursuit of his attraction to a representation of a woman who has been gone for over 400 years. Gordon, as he is portrayed, lacks confidence in his relationships with women. He is unsure of himself, where he is going, what he wants. In short, he's adrift and in one sense he encapsulates that quality in all of us. Gordon becomes for this episode that aspect of us that grapples with lingering doubts about ourselves. When he hears this voice from the past, sort of calling out to be remembered, he is touched by the depth of her desire (read: need) to be remembered. Hence, her opening up her life, or at least snippets of it, through her digital device placed in a time capsule. Gordon captivated by this woman from the past, Laura Huggins, investigates further. He goes as far as to input all the data her iPhone contains about her into the holographic simulation room. The computer "fabricates" a simulation of Laura based on all the information in her phone. Gordon then has the computer recreate a facsimile of Laura's life through a holographic program. Gordon then meets this hologram Laura. He insinuates himself into her "life" and falls in love with her. But since the hologram was based on the data in the phone, this Laura reconciles with her ex-boyfriend, Greg. Gordon is frustrated and heart-torn. He does what, in effect any one who loves another might wish they could do, but could never actually do--simply delete a rival paramour. Sadly, even this effort doesn't help Gordon, because excising Greg from the program changes Laura. She ceases to be the girl that Gordon fell in love with. She lost the very quality that Gordon found most "real" about her--her passion for music. In short, Gordon realizes you simply can't treat a human being like they are a recipe where you can change the ingredients and get a desired result. In the end, Gordon reestablishes the Greg character in the Laura program. He then says good-bye, realizing that he fell in love with a woman whom he can't have, on many different levels. The episode raises several meaningful explorations of the human condition: What is it that makes up the aspect of our person-hood to another person--In this episode. In part, it's our thoughts, dreams, aspirations, how we communicate, what we say, our actions, our interactions, and most importantly, what we hunger and long for. Interestingly, the real Laura didn't want to be forgotten and expressed that underlying desire to not face absolute death--to both cease existence and then be forgotten altogether. This is why she put her phone in the time capsule. This longing makes the digital representation of Laura very real to Gordon. It draws him in to her. And when she demonstrates her vulnerability and sensitive nature through music, he becomes enraptured by her. These aspects made Laura something real to Gordon even though she had died more than a bit less than 400 years ago Do we all simply exist as memories, images, vignettes, and the sense of connection felt by others? Here, the holographic Laura "comes alive" to Gordon because he is able to experience little vignettes of her life and feel a sense of connection to her as expressed by the contents of her iPhone. It's a powerful commentary on what we've become as a social media society. When someone passes suddenly, social media is often the most detailed and vivid accounting of their lives, who they were, where they went, who their friends were, what they liked, what made them laugh... The digital representation of them outlives them, in the same as as Laura. It's haunting in one sense. Gordon fell in love with a ghost from the past. An intangible recreation of someone long since passed Because Gordon loses his zest for the relationship with the holographic Laura after he "deleted" her ex-boyfriend from the program he created of Laura, Gordon comes to realize the hardest aspect of what real love is. True love is to love the totality of someone, taking everything that a person is--the good, the bad, the ugly--and knowing exactly who and what they are, and loving them nonetheless. It's what most of us grapple with for almost the entirety of our lives. Ironically, as children we love completely, though blessed with a certain lack of awareness and full understanding. Once we begin to appreciate and understand the "flaws and shortcomings" of others, our ability to love in that degree diminishes. We see Gordon mature though, he is able to "let go" of Laura and see her off to be happy with Greg. Life is always about letting go. We let go of our parents when we move on to become adults, and our children when they being their journey into adulthood. We let go of our friends that we leave behind in the many places we have made our temporary homes--our schools, our workplaces etc. And we carry a sense of all those people to whom we have extended our love and from whom we have received their love. And that sense of who they are/were stays with us, becomes in essence a part of us, and we evolve because of them. Who we are is an amalgam of the totality of our life experiences to date including all those whom we have known and become known by IF Laura wasn't a digital representation of the past, would Gordon have even attempted to get to know her. As we have established, Gordon is unsure of himself, and undefined in what he wants or where he's headed (ironic that he's the ship's pilot). Gordon has not made a genuine effort to truly get to know another woman the way he attempted with Laura. Why? Was it perhaps because she isn't more than just a program? Was Gordon reticent to make such approaches to a woman who may reject Gordon. In other words, was this all about control, best exemplified by his attempt at deleting the ex-boyfriend. Is it control or the desire for it that drove Gordon's confidence with simulated Laura. Stated differently, is Gordon weary of any situation that he cannot control or manipulate like he does or tries to with the programmed Laura? Is Gordon's experience of love with Laura merely his perception that she loved him? After all, she's a holographic program simulation based on limited digital data mined from an iPhone. Can she "love" Gordon? Or did Gordon simply feel love for Laura because he interpreted and perceived that she loved him. Extending that, in our "real life" romantic relationships, are some of them based mostly on our own perceptions of love for us emanating from that partner. How can we know that what we're receiving is real love or merely our inclination to reciprocate what we perceive as love. And we are very conditioned to reciprocate. Try saying Hi and smiling to a random person. Most times, they'll smile and say Hi back. Is this the same with the feeling or sensation of love. Is it simply an impulse to reciprocate and generates the feeling of love and therefore, the love that blossoms is born of reciprocation of perceived love from another. Finally, the pursuit of love itself a vain attempt to strike some immortality against our own gnawing sense of dread over our obvious and inevitable impermanence? Laura's appeal not to be forgotten is haunting on many levels. Clearly, she doesn't want the life she leads to fade into the tailwinds of time's chariot. But her desire not to be forgotten could also mean that she wants to have mattered to someone, in whom she has made a "lasting impression". And that connection, the desire to have that impact on another, is that our own quest to somehow outlast/outsmart oblivion. "Lasting Impressions" stands out as a haunting tale of how someone lost to the pages of history, somehow makes a defiant return if only for a little while, grasping the heart of someone new in her desperate attempt to not be forgotten. And so, like the characters of a favorite novel or serial on television or cinema, these people live on in us, imbued with our own sentiments and perceptions and made real to us because we've channeled all our longings and heartaches and despairs and hopes and joys into their manifestations within us. Their stories become our stories and so the grand narrative of humanity drums on.

[[[[[SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT]]]]] I hope the whole Kaylon storyline doesn’t undermine this,The time travel thing and Ed being the one guy stopping the annihilation of the Union kinda strayed from the casual atmosphere of the show. It's a brilliant commentary about the nature of what love is...and how connections are formed. IF you note, once Gordon removed all the aspects of Laura's associations with the "other" guy from her life, her entire personality changed to the point that he was no longer enamored with Laura. I have a rather lengthy assessment of this episode that examines the themes touched upon by it. Ultimately after a while you figure out that the Orville is not the bad guys, but they're not the good guys either. They're wrong about to much in unambiguous ways. Most of the time it's because they make the difficult questions plain and then decide that the other side is wrong when half the political divide says it's morally just. And that's why you know: They don't allow for the why. They show it and say it's wrong, more to their credit, but they side, in so doing, often with the worst monsters of history.

@@ActuatedGear That was what I looooooved about where they took the "future morality" idea of Star Trek with this show. Like we all will be, forever.
@ActuatedGear2 ай бұрын
@@3srs5U And that would be fine if they were not ACTUALLY convinced as the writers indeed are, that they are morally justified and "on the right side of the future" without the crisis of conscience. They aren't struggling with decisions. They're convinced everything they do is right. They're children with phasers. It could be worse. They could be celebrating themselves as "The Baddies", which is what a certain WW2 nation did with camps, but with enough power, it stops being so relevant.

One of the best episodes of Science Fiction ever written connecting us to the future. It hits at the core of what we're working towards, how we're going to be seen, how these comments will be seen in the future. We often don't look back and think about specific people and how their lives are as deep and meaningful as ours, that they lived and died on the same world, and that perspective won't change in the future. So to all you beautiful people out there, take that chance, go on that date, take that course, become who you truly want to be - no one lives forever, so make sure you're remembered for who you truly are

On a surface she was adorable, but... First she said that she totally broke up with her BF and even moved to a new place because she had enough of her ex...but when she fell in love with Gordon she still took back her ex for a "new try" and dumped Gordon, the really nice guy who was a "pilot". I wouldn't really trust that kind of women, Laura acted like a queen, in a negative sense, hehe. I just saw this excellent episode again, I loved this one...agree that she was sweet though, hehe.

I love (I mean LOVE) this film, and within a few bars I knew. This rendition and the one’s that followed are amazing. McFarland might be known for his raunchy/ low brow comedy, but the man is smart. Even earlier on in his career you could tell his appreciations for music icons woven into some deeper meaning comedy. He had Dolly Parton on his show for F_(k sake’s. I don’t think one of the world’s fairy godmothers would give him the time of day if he was a bad dude. There are a some jokes that his shows that are outdated, but they fill addresses the problem they were pointing out.
