You are so knowledgeable on the inner workings of this keyboard. By this I mean going into the multiple menus of the instrument and knowing what they do. I grew up playing the old analog organs. Since organs are a thing of the past here in the USA, I have to play keyboards now. I have the SX900 and even with my lack of knowledge on the electronic capabiities of this instrument, this thing is a dream come true for me. Some of the features are so easy to figure out, such as using the mixer to adjust the volumes of different parts of a style to bring out a particular voice, can literally change the whole effect of that style. Having the Right Hand Voices 1,2, and 3 and being able to change the octave of each voice can create a whole new sound. The one thing I would love to learn how to use is the chord looper. I have watched others try to explain it here on KZbin, but they explain it on a level way above my ability to understand. If you ever have the time, I would love for you to do a lesson on how to use this feature on a level that someone like me could understand! I love your videos and your honest opinions on the different instruments you feature. Best of all, I love hearing you play! Please continue to post your videos for us all to learn from and enjoy.

Hi. I personally loathe the chord looper. It’s a lazy persons tool and not a very easy one to use in the fly. It’s one part of Genos I wished didn’t exist. Copied from Korg it’s an utterly useless feature. Sorry.

I had the 700 and now I have the Genos 2. It is such a wonderful instrument. Great sounds for solo and then such incredible styles when you need a "one man band." I'm glad I went with the Genos 2 instead of the Korg PA-5x

I,m using sx 900.. its very nice user friendly keyboard. I added 10 expansion packs and many audio styles and multipads packages it will sound very good. Best for live performances along with vocal harmony for singing. For styles creating it's very easy methods. I used 510, 620, 550, 630, 2000, 3000, 950, 975, Yamaha all models user friendly Yamaha always the best keyboard

Hi Leigh, This is very timely for me, so a big thank you. I have had the Korg PA700 and Pa1000 for the past six years. They are very good in many respects but I have found the following: style creation feels very complicated, as you say the midi to style converter is useless, the ergonomics are poor, the menu system and style editing are unfriendly and, very importantly, there is not the wide community support and availability of fresh styles that the Yamaha keyboards have. I've been contemplating switching to the Yamaha SX900 for a while and your video has helped me decide to go ahead.

When you mention the community you are right. Yamaha has cleverly followed the Apple formula. Make it easy to create content and you build support. Yamaha excel because they have a team of people who know the arranger market inside out and have made it easy to create content. Kudos to Yamaha.

I swear - the best and most timely video for me on KZbin, ever! We bought a Yamaha EZ-220 for my son aged 5 learning keyboard 9 years ago. Have been toying with an upgrade for years. Fast-forward to now, and I have a keyboard that has broken (the As & Eb's stopped sounding a week ago) and a 13-year old who is loving keyboard. My question exactly! SX900 or Genos 1?? I think I'll wait 2 days and see what the announcement does to the Genos 1 market. Thanks for the heads up on the Genos speakers btw!

Hi Leigh. I have been in the business 55 years and have bought and used dozens of keyboards. I still have the old Ketron Audya, Pa4x, and other misc arrangers. I am in awe of your musicality, hence I liked and subscribed. I was thinking of the Ketron Event until I caught your video. I prefer the SX900 for gigs for the reasons you laid out. It would have been gear lust I have been guilty of. You saved me a bunch of money, saying nothing of the aggravation and remorse . Thank you for your great, honest videos.

I bought first a 2nd hand sx700 ftir my son (and me). He loves playing! Dad is really proud of him 👍☺️ It’s on my opinion also a great keyboard. Well it has two major disadvantages: lack of internal memory and the internal speakers are not top. Good Active speakers are rather expensive (500 bucks and more for one and I need two of em!). So I took decision to do an upgrade: sx900, tyros 5 xl and genos 1 were the options. The best sound tbh has the Tyros5. The compressor from SX and Genos is a real bass killer. If you want to keep playing either the compressor, I recommend to plug in a Subwoofer. That does for me the trick. At the end I have chosen the genos 1 for a very good price. The main reasons are: More keys, Support in the future, SA2 Voices, Connectivity, active Sound System. And many professionals wants to upgrade from genos 1 to 2. So there are many good 2nd hand genos 1 keyboards in stores. I got mine (1 year old with warranty) for about 2100 bucks

Have had my sx900 for two years and will px it this week for a Genos 1 and upgrade the speakers. I currently play my sx through an AV amp and a single 200w speaker works and sounds great. Looking forward to playing the larger keyboard with all the extra sounds. 😊

I've worked my way up thru the PSR S series to the SX900. I was considering a move to the Korg PA5X and have seen that drop to £3299 for a 76 key. But then the G2 started being announced. I have bought into the queue for a G2 but it will depend on price. Having seen the montage increase 25% launch price on launch price to the old series. If they do that to the Geno's it would be horrendous given the original Geno's ranged from £4500 up to £5200 because of supply and demand. Add 25% and you need a second mortgage. Can't wait to see.

Hi leigh Your right the sx900 is an amazing keyboard but has a flaw , the keybed by time will rattle especially the black keys so one must be prepared to grease the keys had mine done 3 times in 3 years of ownership . its not hard but annoying to do -however the genos never gave me problems with the keybed and is more solid

Had same issue with keybed, regreased first time under warranty and currently away to dealer to get redone and new felt. That aside I absolutely love it, unbelievably versatile. Had the Tyros 4 SE and Korg PA3x which both felt better to play and the Korg sounds were gorgeous but Yamaha Styles just seem far more playable and flow better with intros, fills etc. Great video again Leigh

I also have the SX900 since its launch. The keyboard is fantastic but this problem with the black keys is horrible for me. Even so, I'm thinking about having a repair done by technical assistance, they can lubricate the keys and improve the problem. It's cheaper than buying another keyboard

Bought a barely used 1yr old one of these last week and am finding my way round it slowly but I have been blown away how good it is. Having said that my last keyboard was a PSR730 which lasted years and was still great and would seriuously come alive especially when connected to a PA system. Cant wait to get the SX900 connected to a PA to see how much better it is, once I get my head round it that is. My only worry would be with the joystick and whether it would get damaged in a keyboard bag.

I have used a psr-950s for many years when entertaining for its portability although I like light combined output of a powered small bass woofer to fully colour the sound. 2 main issues you mentioned:- 1). The internal sound is so convenient and good it should be an option in flagship models. It could be easily silenced if required but I find its use as foldback helpful in noisy situations (ever been there?). The flagship models are just too troublesome to take out and the dicky leads to the external speakers and cumbersome bass are certainly not professional quality. Your advice on speakers is important. 2) Carrying sounds from one keyboard to another. Having a small collection of Yamaha keyboards has the advantage of being able to copy/swap sounds, rhythms, registration memories, multi-pads and my own creations amongst them. Consequently my Psr-s950 is a monster far beyond its original status. also 3) Perhaps the most important advantage of Yamaha real time arrangers is its true accompaniment , reading the whole keyboard even when split. I do not believe any other keyboard can do adequately this despite contrary claims. 4) The vocalizer unit is another inclusive, essential ingredient for me. Although I have 3 flagship models that I love to play, the psr-s950 measures up adequately in performance with its own individual attributes. A true workstation in itself. Yes, I do take it with me almost always. I can only suggest the psr-900 would be the same or better. I suggest the flagship models are more suited to home use or where extensive external pa equipment with foldback is required. Great review.

Ive had a number of different brands over the years but I agree whole heartedly that Yamaha is the most user friendly Ive ever owned and the usability and accompanament is miles ahead of the competition. I have YAMAHA SX900 and TECHNICS KN7000. To be honest the SX900 is getting closer in term of sounds, but it's not close yet in term of mixing production right out the box. I really enjoy both in many gigs. For modern sounds, the SX900 will be very usable. The piano sounds is great, better than KN7000. However, for Rock, Folk, Oldies, and many general favorites songs that people always requested will need KN7000 to satisfied their ears. Playing with some real drum and real guitar definitely need KN7000 to cut through the Band to be able to stand out. SX900 could not stand a chance due to thinner sounds and mixing. I could never get rid my KN7000. The SX900 compliment my gigs.

@royanguren1 *In term of Sounds and technology, KN5000 is below the SX900. I used to own KN5000 before I got my KN7000. KN7000 won hands down. Also, KN5000 doesn't have *SD Card.* Those floppy disk need to replace with USB. It's better get KN7000 if available on sale, or SX900, whichever you prefer. I still have both. The reason I still keep my KN7000 because it's very easy to use, beautiful sounds, SDcard, Strong Sounds. At church with 100 people, KN7000 can handle the crowd easily because the sounds is sharper than SX900 & KN5000.

Thank you for your answer. The problem is that I have that made around 25 new original songs with the KN5000 and recorded in the Techichs format, not in Midi (SMF), and to reproduce all that work I need a KN5000, I don't know if I would be able to get a KN7000(I think very difficult to get one) would reproduce the KN5000 format. By other side, the SX900 Yamaha is not compatible with Technics format unless convert the Technics format in SMF, that is a point that never I was able to get. Yes, really a it was very good brand Technics. Very good speakers. I have the problem on KN5000 of the screen that after a move I stored 2 months on a non well vent warehouse, the screen shows like a shadow produced by humidity, even inside the transport bag., and also the velocity knob "slips" and is a mess change the velocity, other that the difficulty to see the screen by that shadow. I want to make the scores of that songs, I work in Logic Pro, but As I have said have not been able to pass from the KN5000 to my PC via midi cable to Midi format.

@royanguren1 *Very true.* Technics KN5000 is a great keyboard for sure. But the technology is already way behind. To find the SMF converter from KN5000 to KN7000 is not easy. I do have converter from KN2600/2400 to KN7000. But not from KN5000 to KN7000. Also not from KN7000 to SX900 or the other way arround. For that reason, I always bring the two keyboard (KN7000 and SX900) when I gig. OK, here's the catch. *KN7000 have ability to connect the audio directly trough Only USB Cable by using Windows 98 and Win XP.* I am not sure if KN5000 can do that. Since you have Logic Pro X in your Mac, it's nice to started recording your music *from KN5000 directly using audio cable* through your Sound card, while it's still works. Logic and other DAW's are great, but it's not as easily operated with Arranger Keyboard where you can get all the styles, copied and edit them on the spot. Also, Arranger keyboard doesn't need too much plug ins. Right after you record the song, you can just MIX on Logic to make it Pop up and widening the Stereo sounds to get more polish results. I suggest to use stereo audio cable for each L & R (2 ports jack) to get better sound quality compare to only through One headphone Stereo port. KN7000 are still available online, Guitar center, e-Bay, Offer-Up, Craigslist, and etc. I got mine through Craigslist about 8 years ago for $600.

I have owned SX900 for a while and have been using it on events and happy with the mobility and size, but I am also considering purchasing a used Genos form a friend who just bought a Genos 2. He doesn't see much difference in the 2 Genos. I am also watching your video on Genos. I think I will like the Genos. The voices sound much nicer and fuller. I just ordered mine. I took my Medeli AKX10 and sold it to a local music store (Guitar Center) for half of what I bought it. I took my loses and moving on to something serious. I have a feeling Yamaha will soon release their new PSR-SX series but I’ll stay pretty occupied with this one and keep my blinders on till I’m ready to move up again. I love my SX 900. My favorite feature is plugging my guitar or fretless bass into the keyboard using the keyboard's effects and speakers... total turnkey system. I am, however, going to trade up to the Genos for one reason, the black keys on my SX 900 are terrible. They rattle from side to side and it's very noisy where I have to play the piano pretty load to get over the rattle. I'm the original owner and the keyboard has never left the house and have had it about 4 years now. I just hope the new Genos has the instrument input feature, that's the gamechanger for me.

Just found you on You tube. Hoorah! Thank you for your straightforward, no holes-barred reviews. I bought my sx900 a couple years ago. I love it! Being a piano player, and moving to a keyboard with hundreds of styles and voices has been fun, but also daunting. As I watch your videos, I’m impressed with your ability to easily and seamlessly match a tune and play beautifully to just about any style. That for me is a frustration. First because I can’t come up with a song or tune to play with the chosen style, and second, I find myself playing a simple single note melody, which is like a chicken poking at a typewriter with its beak. I haven’t found a source which can pair a melody and an arrangement which is comparable to what you are doing with the styles on the sx900 (like a menu in a restaurant which recommends a wine to pair with an entrée). Do you have any suggestions on this dilemma? Thanks

Yamaha would effectively have to put its montage synth engine into an arranger body. I think the general market of arranger type people are looking for realistic voices which suits AWM2 sample based method, and maybe most em can’t be arsed faffing with FM synthesis or modelling methods as found in their FS1R or VL1 acoustic modelling synth.

I think Yamaha won't do that. Because the PSR is a keyboard that uses voices ready to be used in arrangements. With this you will have few adjustments to the voices so that your song always sounds the same. If you want to arrange arrangements and also explore new tones, you should have two keyboards: an arranger and a synthesizer.

I had the SX900 for a couple of years. I had had several mid range Yamaha Keyboards previously. I struggled for two years to find my way round it. Had I simply used the OTS I would have got the best from. I realise now that parting with it was a massive error of judgement, but I hope the pupils at the Rye WurliTzer Academy in East Sussex have benefited from it. I am tempted to purchase its smaller 'brother' the SX700, but will Yamaha be bringing out a new range of SX Keyboards anytime soon? Thank you Leigh for such a splendid video.

Great review. But I'm in a different quandry......I have not one but two psr 3000's, and its time to upgrade. Obviously Im considering the sx900, but in your opinion would the sx700 be an improvement on the 3000, and how much an improvement? You prefer “Bright” on the Equalizer setting. Yours shows two Bright settings. “BRIGHT” and “Bright”. I’m assuming the all Cap’s version is something you modified. Just an observation. Wondering what the difference is?

Hello Leigh, I'm new to the SX900, having come from the PSR975. I have one question: Can the Data Dial on the SX900 be programmed to change the volume of the voices (Right 1, 2 & 3) in real time, while playing a style, WITHOUT having to go to the mixer? I'm used to it doing just that on the 975. Your videos are superb, as is your playing. I know about the live control knobs but would love to be able to use the dial. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the good work! Thank you.

Yeah must admit, this keyboard at this price is the best in class and does what it says on the tin. Sounds to me like the issue is with understanding your own requirements and/or lack of skill, rather than a fault of the keyboard. It's about as intuitive as you can get, and like Leigh am really not sure what else you'd want it to do.

I have heard reports of problems with the keybed with the SX900. Inititially it is good, but mechanical noises develop over time. Have you heard of this issue?

It depends I think on your playing technique I’ve seen players literally thump keys when playing and some have a light touch. This will ultimately cause issues.

I've had the SX900 since launch. It turns out that if you're playing with headphones or high volume, you won't even notice the noises from the keys. But if it is at a low volume, it may be a bit annoying for the most demanding. This problem did not occur in the previous series, the S975.@@LeighWilbraham

I have a Tyros 5. I also play Yamaha Tenor sax and recently purchased a YDS 150. Can I connect the YDS to a Genos to play Genos through midi in or USB and play Genos voices. Cant do this with the Tyros????

Hi Leigh, this days I went to an music shop to test sx900, but they had only sx600 with cheap organ keybed....how does the FSB from sx900 it feels in comparison with FSX from Genos........ps: I started learning piano on yamaha ydp-v240 with ghs keybed and have somewhere around 3-4 years on it......the organ keybed from sx600, for me was terrible :)....Thank you for the video, it was exactly my point :) , this days I have to decide, sx900 or genos sh

As for whether it's worth upgrading, that depends purely on your own circumstances. Is Genos2 objectively better? Yes. Is it better in ways that matter to you? Are those upgrades worth the extra outlay? Only you can decide.

If they made the Geno's with the same speakers as this one the Genos would be a better keyboard because the speakers the Geno's has is like theatre speakers like you watching a movie for a keyboard it's not digital or Stero speakers like this keyboard

Each unto their own, but the MS01 speakers and sub combo are FAR superior to the built-in speakers in the SX900. You also have better control over the sub and bass volume so they don't need be thumping...although to be fair, a lot of the styles, especially EDM-based ones, absolutely benefit from a bit more bass. Genos is a performance keyboard, not something that is designed to fit into a mix and needs to sound neutral.
