Life insurance and investment companies detected more than 2000 cases of fraudulent insurance claims in 2022 and 1500 involve funeral claims. Some people resort to killing loved ones for life insurance payouts. One of those people is Agnes Segomotsi Setshwnatsho, who is accused of killing her son for 6 million rand insurance payout and her niece for 3 million rand. Agnes had insured more than 40 relatives.

My wife's cousin came to our place devastated. She went to register her new born daughter for SASSA only to be told that she is dead. Her step mom who happened to be a cop in Sebokeng Houtkop, took their details to cover them. She happened to be a part of a syndicate operating between hospital staff, forensic pathology, Home Affairs and SAPS situated in that Radius. Thanks to intervention of the media. She regained her status. The step-mom died later.

It's such a shame that criminals are misusing the system. My mother insured her relatives and everytime she submitted a claim she declared the payout and gave it towards the funeral expenses. I remember my uncle did not have any insurance at the time of his death. Luckily my mother had covered him and he was stored at the mortuary under the insurance cover my mother had for him. The insurance also had coffin and cow included as part of the cover. If my mother did not insure him, it would have been a horrible time

There are many situations where the insurance of the person who died does not pay out and this is where the money comes in. bcs if multiple ppl have inssured the same person, they can pitch in and HELP bcs usually thats why they cover them

Other relatives are cruel. They insured my brother for funeral. I was the only 1 who used the all of the policy money for his funeral. All my 7 siblings put their claims into their pockets. I asked them why? They said they will use it for tombstone and for unveiling. This happened in January 2015.Till today no tombstone, no one is talking about it 😢😢

It's quite devastating for families who cannot afford a funeral. If a, good Samaritan wish to take up a funeral cover for them, it's going to raise eye brows. I have families and distant inlaws who are struggling. Been paying for the cover for over 5 years now to avoid shouldering funeral costs. It was prompted by my cousin whom I had to burry from my pocket and owed some balance after his funeral. The family squandered even the contributions made after funeral. A very stressful situation I may say. Where do we draw the line as greed seem to consume some our people?

Insurance companies can learn 1-2things from banks. With banks, life cover is for policy holder only. Funeral, you can add lives and maximum is 50k... Imagine allowing a person to insure some1 for over million whaaat... Or then they must try contacting insured live and have them Sign consent form
