Wow this podcast is pretty miserable, it sounds like rugby is over for Ireland and all their club teams 🫣 If they only bothered to talk more about Connaught who were brilliant the weekend.

I think most Leinster fans I talk to have noticed the disastrous change since losing Stuart Lancaster and complete change with Mike Catt leaving Ireland, the attack the envy of the world has turned into sand, gone gone gone, Nienabers Blitz defence is just not working, turning Leinster into South Africa and by the same token Ireland is a strange way to go, Leinster and Irelands attack and defence before Nienaber was top shelf. Now their attack for 90% of the time is beyond clunky, the lineout is a complete disaster, so Nienabers promise of it taking 13 games to get it together is well and truly passed. But obviously something is seriously wrong in the Leinster set up, or the players are not buying into the game plan, but these players can not have forgotten how to play dynamic rugby, so it has to be the Coaching. Took long enough for the pundits to notice what the vast majority of fans have seen since the WC.

If they win the CC this year nothing else matters, if they don't it will be for the above reasons. I do think they've prioritised defence over attack in the last 12 months but that's because it required a big change, come the new year they'll re-focus on the attack and reignite all the good stuff from Lancaster and Bleyendaal, it's all still there they just need to put the hours in to bring it back. My one concern is JN's defensive system worked so well with SA as the were a much bigger 23 than all other teams, only France got close to them size wise, but Leinster are smaller than LaR and Toulouse and then a similar size to many other teams.

@readesiun988 absolutely spot on in everything you've said. Nienaber is the opposite to everything leinster do and strive toward from schools rugby upwards. They create players to work on dynamic and cohesive play. And then at the very end point, after all this work is done, they bring in a fella with a completely different view on how the game should be played. GET STUART LANCASTER BACK INTO THE FOLD NOW.. For both leinster and irelands sake. (From a munster fan)

I haven't been impressed by Leinster at all this year. Lineout is muck, attack is blunt. Like Ireland, they can't create line breaks from deep. So a good team just needs to be disciplined and deny them easy entries to the 22. Clermont were halfway there. Toulouse meanwhile are looking good for a 7th star

Dear Joe, Re: the divergence between Leinster and Ireland post Lancaster- here are some questions that I think you could have teased out, or could explore more on future podcasts: 1. What were the discussions between the IRFU and Leinster when Nienaber was being recruited- was it part of a long range plan/vision for Leinster and Irish rugby, or was it more a case of let's get in a world cup winner and see what he can add to the Irish system? 2. Given how aligned and cohesive the path from Schools-Academy-Leinster-Ireland was under Lancaster, and the success that brought the national team, were the IRFU aware that they could be sacrificing this cohesion by bringing Nienaber in? Or was the plan to move the whole Schools/Leinster/Ireland system towards a more Nienaber influenced style of play?

He mentiones Irish teams also needing to rest players(Munster&leinster) and specifically mentions Ulster resting players going to Toulose hoping to do better at home with BB. etc. and he clearly says "everyone is at it to a degree". The point CLEARLY being made here is that the problem is systemic and the the system "is broken" with no easy solution with divergent competion paths and tv deals already signed and locked in.
