Russia's avant-garde came to America through canvas, exhibits in our museums. But the untold story is clearly the architectural monuments captured by William Craft Brumfield. I read through the comments--people are surprised that Brumfield, the bard of Russia's north, could incisively photograph the urban avant-garde, but I remember 1987; I was a graduate student at Cal Berkeley and Prof. Brumfield came from out of nowhere with these amazing photos of the avant-garde in architecture and stellar knowledge of each building. Hugh McLean said at the time that in all his years of teaching he'd never had such a brilliant PhD examination like that from Brumfield. So avant-garde architecture in Russia was part of the beginning of his career and that he returns to it now makes entire sense.
