If you're familiar with Lekeu's unique voice, this deceivingly clumsy harmony becomes perfectly logical. That's why he held so much respect with the likes of Franck and D'Indy. I will always mourn Lekeu's early demise. What harmonic wonders awaited our ears and eyes, only to be snatched cruelly away?

The subject of the fugue then became the introduction of the 2nd movement of his piano quartet. How interesting!

Extraordinary stuff. Think you've got a hold of where the line/ harmony are leading and then it goes through a portal into another dimension. Also: I wonder if Busoni was familiar with this sonata. Never heard anything quite like the Fantasia Contrappuntistica - until now.

A prelude and two fugues? Quite a unique sonata. But still quite enjoyable.

The fugues aren't strict fugues either

Lekeu, for all his precocity, was no born contrapuntist. Academic and dry as dust.
