Hello lee. Maybe a suggestion? Ask your buddy Russ to hold your phone and make a short one. when you are signing books. Just a few minutes. Then we get a little taste of how it goes. I think Russ wouldn’t mind. Do you think? Again just a suggestion. 😁 Greetings bass guru. 🙏🏻

The Round Mound of Sound. I’ve seen many legends there. Jay McShan, Robert Cray, John Hiatt, the Brecker Brothers, David Sanborn, Willie Nelson, Jean Luc Ponty, Yellowman, Spyro Gyra, and many others. One of my most memorable moments there was when Jimmie Smith jokingly threatened to shoot the sound man after his third time asking him to “cut the damn echo” on his vocal mic as he talked between songs. He said “don’t make me shoot back there” laughed and then said “you know ima bring a piece to Wichita”. The sound man finally got the message and gave him a dry mic. Incredible show, early 80’s. Thank you Leland for coming to our town and sharing your trip with us.

@@hanspeterlillese2225The same happened to me in Cornwall. I was already driving in UK for several days but during a ride through a forest without any other cars I suddenly drove on the right side. When a car came towards us I even honked at him 😬 thankfully nothing happened

@@hanspeterlillese2225 yes, this seems to be the problem (concentration decreasing after some time…). What was so funny in my case was that I honked at him in his country driving on the wrong side and he just changed lane and disappeared without the usual middlefinger or anything else. It seemed as if he was used to card driving on the wrong side 🤔

👍👍 Great venue/stage tour!!!! Interesting venue: we were getting a major rat pack vibe in the back until you turned to the stage! And all accompanied by an array of great sounds! I was enjoying the guitar up on the stage, but we are both happy to accept an annual birthday serenade! BTW, props to all of you on the tech front. None of it sounds uncomplicated or simple. Can't imagine how people who started out in the 50's had to adapt to so many changes.

Maybe 25 years ago I played a place in Colorado Springs called the Colorado Music Hall that looked very similar to this venue. That wood dome gave it such a rich sound. Enjoy the show tonight Lee.

Hi Leland!! If you would like to know a little history about your next venue on Friday at the Uptown Theater opened in 1928 -Kansas City, Missouri is a city of Fountains and of course Back to Back KC Chiefs Super Bowl Champions as … I just live a few blocks south of the uptown on the beautiful Country Club Plaza!! I don’t have tickets to the show, but I did get to see Lyle & his large band a few years ago at our icon Starlight Theater! I also used to work for Chris Fritz & Contemporary a Midwest concert promoter back in the 70’s & 80’s! What good times & great memories with the catering company called Back Stage Cafe! We also did a Cheap Trick show in Wichita at that same venue and we called it the space ship! 😂 The Uptown actually was a movie theater when I was very young child age 4-5 as my parents took us to see movies there!! Many many years later and many owners it was turned into a very cool concert venue! My favorite years were from mid 70’s to early 80’s as my brothers wife was the box office manager and i got to see many shows (when music was music) of course, only if I wasn’t catering at another kc concert venue! I saw Zappa, Arlo, Weather Report, Edgar Winter, Tanya, Pure Prairie League, Taj, Alice, Prine, Harry Chapin, Winwood, etc. And all of the artist who performed at the Uptown would always sign the wall backstage .. not sure if it’s still there - too many owners have changed it by painting over the stars ⭐️ on the ceiling and ripping out most of the floor seats! Anyways pls enjoy your stay on Friday, and have fun performing for the greatest music fans EVER right here in KCMO! We also have a mutual friend in FREEBO! ✌️& ❤

I've been at this venue a bunch over the years, so for folks following along: it was built in 1960 for big band performances, mostly. The original stage is curved and tiered; it's been flattened and squared for contemporary use. The plaster band shell follows the curve of the dome roof/ceiling and yes, Porky Pig has said "That's all, Folks!" more than once. Same family ownership until about 6 or 7 years ago. All the portraits are artists who've played there - Snoop, Metallica, Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bonnie Raitt, James Brown... The dance floor is "floating" maple and while not a skating rink, it is home base for Wicked City Roller Derby. The Cotillion was recently inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. Another comment speculated on the acoustics. The band shell does what it looks like it does - project the stage sound out into the audience. For the Large Band this isn't a bad thing but for some other types of acts it can make sound operator's job more difficult. Round rooms with domed ceilings have lots of reflections that cause acoustic anomalies and moving a few feet in any direction will change what you hear. It won't sound bad but it will sound different. When the floor is free of chairs or people the reflections between dome and floor are interesting, to say the least. Every show comes with a physics lesson. Great vibe in the room, the staff is friendly and the local crew is efficient.

The Cotillion is a special events facility that hosts concerts, dances, comedians, and stage shows featuring nationally known artists and performers. This special events facility is available to rent for concerts, dances, banquets, corporate events, wedding receptions, trade shows, and private parties. Built in 1960, The Cotillion is a 28,500 square foot building with a maximum concert capacity of 2000 persons. The unique circular design of the building has large wooden beams supporting a 24 foot high domed ceiling over an 11,000 square foot floating hardwood maple dance floor and a stage that features a distinctive neon lit band shell.
