This machine looks like a beast! I wonder if the aesthetics are for me? For the price point, I'd be tempted to go for a more typical looking machine like the QuickMill Silvano, which also has the parallel shot-steam capability.

Nice review Kev, the Mara X is a great machine. I have admired the Mara for a while and did consider buying it at one point the gold version is worth the extra £50 for the looks and real wooden accents, although it is not actually gold it is much more a pastel colour. But at a similar price point I think the Elizabeth just edges it, a duel boiler great build heat up in 5-8 mins great PID with really good control software, ths same quiet pump as the Mara, just a shame it really needs a face lift even if the just did the colours like the Mara it would help. In the end I decided to stick with my trusty Sage Bambino Plus a bit longer with it's 3 second heat up time, I'm a big impatient like that. I really don't get the fascination with the E61 group, it is yesterdays technology with poor temperature stability, long heat up times, and needs a lot of maintenance to keep in decent condition.
@Coffee_KevАй бұрын
Cheers :-). Yeah I'm looking forward to reviewing the Elizabeth too. Re E61 machines being yesterday's tech, referring to heat up time, E61 machine use requires a slightly different mindset. In the mindset of a thermocoil machine user you'd look at E61 as having a slow heat up time, which is understandable. From the mindset of E61 users though, there is no heat up time, the machine is always ready for them when they walk up to it in the morning, until the last coffee of the day. They'll probably have it on a smart plug to come on 30 mins or so before their first coffee, and to turn off later in the day depending on when you tend to have your last coffee. There will be many E61 machine users who can't understand what this fast heat up time thing is all about. When they get to their machine to use it, everything is fully heated up, not just the boiler but the entire machine including the big brass group and all the internals, and the portafilter (as long as it was left in the group of course). Each time they want another coffee, they can just walk up to the machine, do a quick group flush (not required with the Mara X) and then pull their shot, and again, everything is fully heated. There are other pros and cons of course, there are other group types (saturated groups, heated groups) that mean zero offset between boiler & group temp, and better temp stability, and there are energy efficiency considerations too, although that's not quite as straight forward as it may seem, either. I use a lot of different machines, and and I can actually see the benefits of all of them, it just depends on the user and what kind of mindset they find themself in really. I do actually suspect we'll see more E61 hybrids coming, such as the S61, the Sanremo E61 with a heated group that they've got in the Sanremo You. Cheers Kev
@simply_psiАй бұрын
@Coffee_Kev thanks for the reply Kev, love the information, and I can definitely see the appeal and that steam punk look of E61 machines does appeal to me, and I do see the advantages of the E61 like how easy it is to add flow control to the E61 group, but having the machine on constantly cannot be great for the environment unless you're lucky enough to live in a property with solar panels. I may still eventually end up getting an E61 but you are right some of the new hybrid E61 groups are interesting. But I still think my ultimate home machine would eschew the E61 ie something like a La Marzocco Mini or Micro, Decent or a more budget friendly La Spaziale S1 Mini Vivaldi shame about the 53mm portafilter though.
