I love how snicket explains certain words, it's a direct nod to the books and how the author tells the story. You see, when lemony snicket explains a word, the way he explains a word can blend in with the story as an event is happening. Personally, I think the tv series is killing it adaptation wise.

Honestly I feel like you didn't understand the show, I get that it wasn't your sort of thing, like here's an example, you complained that most the adults were incompetent which is the entire point. The series follows the books more closely and the books are a satire of children's lit, so they're criticizing how adults in children's lit tend to be pretty incompetent by giving the adults in the series that same flaw but to an absurd extent. It's why all of the adults that are actually competent have to end up getting killed. Also I think you missed a lot of the humor in the series, maybe it's not your style of humor but there's the edge of dark and absurdist humor constant in the series.

I completely agree and you are right. The series is supposed to be about how three orphans go through many guardians however, Count Olaf really wants the Baudelaire fortune. The author made the parents not know Count Olaf was in the disguise thats part of all the unfortunate events that happen in the show. It is literally one of the key points that the Baudelaires live in misery.

Lemony’s appearances, spoiling any shocking revelations, creates a uniquely consistent oppressive atmosphere, and at the same time, creates distance for the audience, which hammers in your impotence to affect their story. If it’s not your cup of tea, that’s fine, but it wasn’t bad writing. Also, Patrick Warburton changes his outfit a few times; it’s not for comedy, but because he’s supposed to be blending in. A suit is a typical working class outfit, and carries an authority that people are less likely to question, which is why he often wears one.

I have to disagree about Snicketts placement within the show. I, personally, think its a good way to break up tension and remind viewers that this is a retelling of the story of the children seen through the eyes of Snicket himself, something people often forget in favor of the children because they are the main characters. His interruptions in the show and short monologs also remind viewers of the deeper and more subtle plot, which is why the entire show is even taking place to begin with. Without his little interruptions we would never know about things like Beatrice or realize that we actually know what VFD stands for from the very first episode.

Count Olaf actually is their relative though, in EVERY version. The show was justifying the misunderstanding about the meaning of the word "closest", when the Baudelaire parents' will says they should go to the "closest living relative". The will clearly meant emotionally close, but the bank took it to mean geographically close.

The reason Lemony Snicket is constantly in the scenes is because they wanted the series to be more like the books in that regard. In the books, he is CONSTANTLY narrating and going on just like we see in the show, only more so. Telling stories, doing his little vocabulary lessons etc. Also, he is revealing important details that can only be revealed to the viewer by him. They left out his love for the kids mother, Beatrice in the film, but now, more attention can be given to that and other things of importance that he talks about in the books. There's just a lot to it and a very good reason behind him constantly being there. I hope that makes sense. But I get it. I does become slightly annoying after a while. Also, I believe he changes outfits to fit the scene a few times that you may not have noticed. In the last episode, he is wearing the Prufrock Preparatory School uniform and I believe he wears a couple of different outfits throughout the show as well.

Also, Alfrey Woodard(I think that's how you spell her name)the actress who played Aunt Josephine is actually an extremely talented award winning actress. It's just that for whatever reason, this was not the best project for her. I noticed that this show seemed to have a very specific stylized style of acting. She probably just couldn't adjust her own acting skills for this. But seriously! lol she really is a wonderful actress. She has been nominated for an Oscar, has 4 Emmys and 18 nominations, a Golden Globe and 3 Screen Actors Guild Awards. She's good...really lol

Here are some of my problems with this video. 1. There are nine books left in the series not ten. 2. Lemony Snicket changes his outfit more than just at the beach. Heck you show the example at the orchard where he's wearing overalls. 5:17 3. Also the Netflix has brighter and more diverse colors. At least not all the characters in the netflix series wore black clothing. 4. About the comedy, that was pretty biased about what you said about Sunny making the comedy better. There were more funny and clever moments I caught including a fourth wall break, a Nickolodeon reference, a joke involving an hour glass, a funny remark about Mr. Poe's childhood, and a reference to the 2008 real estate crash. 5. What you said about Aunt Josephine was mean. Screaming is part of her character and at least she stands up to Count Olaf instead of openly giving the Baudalaires to him.

If you hate breaking the 4th wall the show does it way too much to not be a distraction from the plot, while Olaf asking to take it from the top was in character and flowed well to display who Olaf was.I admire the not taking the short length of the movie as a handycap, but by ignoring the cheap production of the show it is as if he has given a handicap to the show. Un fair.... Upon just seeing the examples even in this video I would have thought the movie better, and, having watched both productions, know that the movie is exceptionally better then the show.

You depend on the narrator as your one and only window into this world, which makes it easier to hang on to every word he says. it helps that he is deeply and mysteriously connected to these kids' story and their dead parents. So you welcome the author's digressions because it would often provide you with another glimmer of insight into the big picture. or, sometimes, hilariously the opposite. On-screen, however, you're already watching the story unfold, so Snicket only ever pops up really to just stop a scene dead in it's tracks so you can watch a man of no particular relevance walk out and assault you with dad humor. speaking of, I like the actor playing him but this version of Snicket feels like somebody dragged their dad in to read lines from a script with a sense of humor that goes right over his head

The tone of the series is darker and Olaf is infinitely more cruel: It's more than obvious that it's the other way around, the series has a much more cartoonish atmosphere whereas the movie is grim and keeps it relatively realistic throughout. 2. The movie uses comedy more than the series: While they both have an absurd and dark sense of humor, the series is far more exaggerated and light-hearted, almost to a surreal extent. 3. The creator didn't like Snicket's costume gags so there's only one near the beginning: Well, this is just straight up false. 4. Snicket's "interruptions" are a way to draw younger kids in, unnecessary at times and ruins the moment: See, the thing is, that interruption IS "the moment". I understand that it can be a personal preference, but it's almost like saying the songs in Grease were interruptions. He made the remark that he didn't read the books which used this type of obvious storytelling as a main vehicle, but just the series by itself makes it clear that that's the way the story is going to be told. It's not an additional tool, it's inherent. 5.The character break that he mentions around 9:10 : I don't know if he's joking with that and I'm completely misunderstanding, but Olaf is an egotistical actor, that is EXACTLY in character. 6. Actors being unnatural, mentioned around 11:00 : The tone isn't supposed to be natural or realistic, that scene is not a one time mishap, that is how things work in that universe. 7. The criticism against Poe: This was just straight up criticism against the actual character, not the way he's been portrayed, he just criticized the character for being an annoying idiot. Well, he is that? He's supposed to be that. I honestly don't get this one. 8. The series has a low budget: No it doesn't. They built those sets from zero, there was minimal green screening as mentioned by the actors themselves, the show had an immense budget. I felt the CGI being laughable at times was a conscious choice but not liking it is personal so I'll give him that. 9. Concluding the story can be visually told its entirety unlike Harry Potter: Well, saying that without reading the books is just not right. That could be the case, but there's no way he can conclude on that without actually reading the original. (Especially when the story has so many obvious literary references and gags.) 10. And as a minor point, I found the remarks about the "fat" wife and the constant mention of things being "retarded" distasteful. It seems childish and just simply unnecessary. There is no actual care for the storytelling, and I may be taking this WAY too seriously but I do care about this story. I found the lack of even the bare minimum effort to get simple facts right disturbing.

The thing is, the ending fits the movie's tone. It doesn't matter what the source material says, a book series doesn't work as a film by itself. They took creative liberties which worked better for the type of film they were going for. It's a miracle that the movie is as faithful as it is.

This video gets to me for some odd reason. I try to look at his points in his point of view but I still think the show was much better than the movie in general! The characters are much more like the books and it makes the series so much better. The series has more time to explain everything and you get more time to actually listen and it doesn’t feel as rushed. When I watched the movie I felt like barley any of the guardians had any lines because their scenes were so rushed. Both count Olaf’s were fabulous but you could tell it was Count Olaf more in the movie than the series. In the series you also feel more sorry for the children and the count Olaf in the series threatens them more but in the movie it seems like it’s a joke or something? Obviously this is my opinion but the series for me is about a 9/10 and the movie about a 6/10.

Aside from adding a few extra things, the Netflix show pretty much feels like I was dropped into the world that the books created which is why I love the Netflix version so much. Like some of the things he complains about are things pulled from the books like Lemony’s side stories, Josephine being over the top and being more concerned about grammar than the safety of the children, Count Olaf’s bad disguises somehow fooling everyone except the Baudelaire children, Sunny’s very sharp teeth, and especially Mr Poe being the most infuriating person in the entire series with how stupid he is. All the things he complained about are in the book, especially when Lemony is reciting lines straight from the book which gave the story a rather unique flair.

Alfre Woodard holds a special space in my heart, I loved her as Betty Applewhite and I enjoyed her performance in the show, but knowing she's a very competent actress made me feel sad she didn't give it 100%, or maybe it was the acting coach screwing up. I'm not sure, but she was definetly a good Aunt Josephine. I really wished she would end like the book version, though. Meryl Streep is a tough "competetor" though and I definetly understand why people trend to prefer Meryl Streep over Alfre Woodard in this role.

Ive Heard a lot of people say the same thing: "Count Olaf could have killed Mr.Poe anytime!" But don't you understand that in order for Count Olaf to get his hands on the children's fortune, he first needs to have legal control over them, and Mr.Poe is the one he needs to convince that he is a worthy guardian or that he has been left in charge, killing him would do no good. If he killed him in The Reptile Room #2, after being proved to be Count Olaf, it would only make it harder for him to get the children's money.

The movie version is brighter overall, but the series focuses on placing the brighter colours on the children and the happy moments or memories as a contrast to the monochromatic and cruel world they face all the time. So you see brighter colours in the series, but they have a certain role in the storytelling (compare them to the almost monochromatic settings of Olaf's mansion, their burnt house, Aunt Josephine's house, the factory, etc,.) whereas in the movie, they don't use vibrant colours but as a whole is much brighter.

It depends on what you mean by "bright colors." The movie has a warmer color grading, so everything is a little more "comforting." in the netflix series everything is graded very blue, so it feels "cold" and sad. That actual color scheme of the movie is pretty gray and black -- there is a general lack of color. But the colors are saturated, so it feels like a "brighter" world if that makes sense. The netflix series is more "colorful" -- there is a wider range of existing colors and tones, but they are desaturated and dulled out. I think in the movie, they kept saturation high while keeping actual colors of objects and costumes dark and somber. There is also much nicer contrast between darks and lights, so everything is much more visually striking. It keeps the film looking modern and beautiful but without making it too cheery looking. I think it was a good decision, because the film looks gorgeous. The show looks just kinda boring to me. :/ And usually I like a desaturated look. I think it just falls flat for me, because I feel like desaturation signals "serious," but the netflix series is just too wacky and cartoonish in its writing, and so the look ends up clashing with the writing.

i mostly agree with you here and on the whole its a great video but i have to disagree with you about lemony snicket; his purpose is to break the mood, interrupt scenes, detach the audience from the moment. stuff like this is often used in expressionist theatre to make the audience more critical of the things happening on-stage, rather than thinking more with emotions than logic, which i think is a great addition to the show. it happens in the books too, where something really suspenseful is happening and right on the cliffhanger you get a page of snicket's ramblings. as both a callback to the books and with a solid dramatic function i personally love it, but thats just me :)

The show does not have a "darker aesthetic." It does use juxtaposition to convey how horrible the orphans feel by contrasting their immediate environment with the bright and happy tones that go on around them. The film is the one with the darker tone.

The Netflix Olaf acted overtly evil, but was subconsciously and secretly unhappy about himself, his life and his choices in life- but was too proud and forgone to do anything to change it. The Movie Olaf is more friendly, but that hides how much more heartless and devious he is- especially since the movie never reach the end of the book series, like the Netflix series did, so he comes across as an irredeemable monster with no sad depths to his personality.

(Here's a recent, quick example for you: her 2 minute cameo scene in Captain America: Civil War is easily the best acting in a film full of good actors. Ok. You misinterpreted that scene of the movie at 9:21. Since Olaf was portrayed as an evil over the top character who was an actor, Olaf tried to "act" sad that their parents died, but he felt like he messed up, so in order to to try to reconvince Poe, he confuses the children in doing the "line" again and make it more genuine. I would go into more detail, but that's where I wanted to talk.

You were actually originally right, this moment wasn't improvised or just some mistake that was left in the film. It's actually in the script which makes sense because the line after it is Sunny saying 'what a schmuck' which wouldn't make sense without any kind of gag before it. Many people also say that the reason the kids look so confused and uncertain at this moment is because Carey caught them off guard with his improvisation. However it would be impossible to be capturing in camera both Carey delivering the gag and the kids faces/reaction simultaneously as both camera's would impeach on each other's frames whilst rolling. It would also be impossible for this to be an improvised moment as the shot in which Carey say's 'give me the line again' and the reaction shot of him gasping dramatically after Klaus has said 'our parents just died' for the second time, these two shot's of Carey are completely different frames and a whole new set up would need to be made by the crew in order to capture this. The only way this could be achieved in real time is if the crew were filming with 3 camera's at the same time, however this is incredibly unlikely as industry standard for shooting on a film set is at the most 2 camera's for a normal scene like this between people talking, and even if 3 camera's were in use you would be able to see camera's all over the place in almost every shot. So yeah

Connor MacNair I wholeheartedly don't believe that. I believe that you could change up the adaption while still staying faithful to the book. An adaption doesn't have to copy the book like it's the holy bible

I actually liked the movie Olaf better, because he at least tried to put on a facade. A bad guy who might as well run around with a sign that says "I'm the villian" is less menacing makes me increasingly pissed off when the adults don't see through it

You should read the freaking books! The show is much more accurate, both in storytelling and character depictions, but you criticize them because of personal preference. At least Daniel Handler was directly involved in the show, and approved of its depiction, unlike the movie. The movie was rushed and had bad development/character depictions

I've read the books and really enjoyed it but I hate the show even though it's far more faithful than the movie The show is way too comedic and the acting is horrible

Well in the end of the third season, they “adopt” kits child, Beatrice, and then the story ends with Beatrice and lemony talking about the Baudelaire AFTER the events of the end

I agree about Mr Poe. In episode 7 when he was forced to remove his badge, that was one of the most satisfying moments in the whole series.
