Is the waterproof Lems Boulder Boot a good minimalist boot? Is the Lems zero drop boot ACTUALLY waterproof AND comfortable? Find out in this review of the Lems Boulder Boot (waterproof edition)!
If you're looking for a barefoot style boot, you've probably come across the Lems Boulder Boot. In this review, Matt talks about how the waterproof Boulder Boot feels, how it functions, and when and where he uses it. These flexible minimalist boots tick a lot of boxes. They have zero drop and a wide toe box that keeps the feet healthy and - hopefully - dry!

They look nice! Thank you for your review :) I have been wearing the "freet mudee" for a year now. I wear them in cold weather with very thick socks, since in winter there is a lot of mud and snow in the area I live in (they are completely waterproof as well). They are hiking shoes and come with a removeable insole for more stability, that is quite hard. I took it out and replaced it with a soft insole to have more insulation, but not loose the flexibility from the thin sole. But I still have to keep walking to keep my feet warm in them. They also have a really wide toebox! Never had so much space in any other shoes! And they are vegan, even though they look like leather. I also like to wear barefoot shoes from "wildling", which are very, very flexible and comfortable, but are not waterproof. Some of their models are water resistant up to some point, made of mostly natural and fair trade materials and very nice design options to choose from.

I’m not a boot fan but as far as boots go, I love my Lems!! I’ve had them for about 4 weeks now. Wear them daily. The only thing I would want different in them is some speed laces on the top 2 or 3.

I have Lems Boulder boots that are not waterproof. I live in the northern hemisphere, in a wet and cold climate (for 6 months mostly about +5...-10C + rain, snow, slush). I have conditioned my boots with bees wax and they can perform incredibly well even when it's raining or if I run/ jump quickly through puddles. However, I'm thinking of new pair of Boulder boots and I am considering now waterproof boots, because at the moment I can't step into the water/ walk through the water without feet getting wet. Thank you for the review.

Thanks for the review! Been wearing BOOT boots for a few years now. Steel toe are not for me. Only the first pair were. I think a lot of people wear them for 'why not?' Or cus they kneel down a lot, less that they actually need the protection. I'm excited/scared to switch to minimalist shoes/boots. Thanks. I'll buy them through your link.

Loved the review, one thing I noticed when you were walking your heel was striking first, if you're noticing some discomfort or wanting more padding, you may want to try landing with your forefoot first. I'd love to buy these boots once they come out with a better non slip sole for snow/slippery terrain

Thanks. Your channel has the best reviews for minimalist shoes. What are your thoughts on wearing these on hot days? Does the waterproofing membrane make it less breathable? I don't want hot and sweaty feet all day. Also are you aware Lems now have a ankle height version of the boulder boots? but its not waterproof.

Great review! I have the Primal 2 and it is my first minimalist shoe, I freaking love them. However I work in construction management so I have to swap in to work boots when I go on-site. So I go from super comfy and light and airy to heavily restrictive and hot boots. Winter is coming so I wanted a minimalist boot that looks like a boot. Xero shoes have good reviews but I feel they'd still look like a sneaker. I'm not worried about steel toe since I'm just managing not working, just need something for appearance and to handle the weather.

I think the argument for non-waterproof is if you are in a warmer climate, you might want something that, like you described, will keep stuff out and maybe provide ankle support, but that is breathable.

Another is that some people don't wear the same footwear year-round. I wear boots in the colder seasons, but as soon as Spring starts to warm up, and I move to wearing shorts, I stop wearing boots. Time to bust out the sneaks. I recently came across the review that mentioned the midsoles of some boots will breakdown if they're not in use for prolong periods of time, so I'll have to do something about that if I want my Redbacks to last.

I bought a pair and took them on a back to back hiking trip. I did 46 miles at Isle Royal and then 29 at Pictured Rocks. The boots did GREAT with waterproofing! They were super comfortable on the trial and treated my feet really well. They do not grip as well as my other boots on wet rock but the comfort and waterproofing were well worth the trade off.

I got mine recently, looking forward to using them! By the way, as someone who recently got into barefoot shoes in general, my toes are very close together and I have bunions on both my feet. A couple years back I got into skateboarding and I used my right foot to push and over time that bunion on my right foot really started to cause pain. Do you think it would help to get toe spacers and use them with my wide toe box barefoot shoes or do you have any other suggestions for helping reduce the pain.
@BeGrizzlyStrong
@BeGrizzlyStrong 3 жыл бұрын
Toe spreaders are awesome. Don't overdo it. Build up over time. When you walk with them each step forces the toes apart and if that isn't normal for you you'll end up in pain if you go too hard too fast.

Absolutely, correct toes inside the wide toebox shoes is the way to go. I also use simple elastic with cushioned loops on each end (from Amazon) to do kind of toe stretches. That feels so nice.. I hope you doing well with healing those
@mikewalkow1860

I just received mine yesterday. After trying them on I will be returning immediately. The leather is very stiff and not very pliable. The toe box is too narrow and low and crushes my toe and my toes barely fit, so forget wearing correct toes like i do at times, and I do have a narrow foot with a little hammer toe. Another downside you have to unlace them partway to get them on otherwise you might have an aneurysm they are so difficult to pull on otherwise. Next I'll try the Vivo hiker instead.

good review, ive been farily disapointed with the quality and features of most barefoot boots, and the cost, im looking into making my own. fyi they are waterproof because they have a waterproof breathable membrane liner that lets vapor escape but blocks water from getting in (gore tex) advantages to these is they are waterproof if done right, disadvantages is the waterproofness doesnt last forever (the membrane gets worn out) and they are less breathable than having no membrane. when they do fail, then they let in water and basically take a long time to dry out, making them less useable in wet conditions than boots that had no waterproof liner to begin with. basically the two philosophies when dealing with water is either have a waterproof boot of some kind or make a super breathable quick drying boot. btw, have you ever tried fox walking while wearing minimalist footwear? they really go together well, and i completely stopped a fairly chronic knee problem i was having by mostly fox walking and wearing minimalist shoes.

My only complaint with these is that they need to add more flexible joints at the rear of the ankle. Over time the leather softens a little but it still doesnt have enough flexibility at the rear ankle flex point. After several hours fatigue starts to set in. And the thick threading on top of the toe box comes loose over time. I've had to re-sew the toe box more than once over the years. They're also much wider at the heel than necessary giving a chunky look/feel to them. I really wish someone would just trace out a pair of Vibram FiveFingers and make that the shape of their shoe. For goodness sake, make the toe boxes WIDER!

I'll help you out with the drawbacks... poor grip on wet rocks compared with Vibram or other good rubber sole on hiking boots. Also the sole doesn't have lugs for gripping off-trail loose terrain (mud, snow, etc). So not really a true replacement for a good off-road hiking boot (there's very few minimal boots for that purpose unfortunately).

Hey, question not at me but I might be able to help! They are super light and depending on your style could pass as a “look” lol. If the indoor temperatures are quite warm then I would take this into big consideration. Because they are waterproof it means that they don’t breathe at all. So.. sweat! Which can happen quite fast, first day I got them I walked home in quite chilly weather (was wearing very thin socks) and I felt some moisture (I am not a very sweaty person either). So if you do go this route I would recommend wearing wool socks. I like icebreakers hiking liner socks. I could wear them in the summer with no issue and imo they hold up their shape and durability more than the light ankle/shirt crew socks they have that are wool. If you wear moisture wicking socks it’s just going to wick they moisture away from your feet but keep the moisture in the boot. The wool also helps with any bacteria or stink that could happen with a not very breathable boot! Hope this helps!

Contact cement works better than shoe goo. As for boots I have had good experience with Chippewa, but my boots still are just about worn out after a bit over a year(I don't know if the uppers are even salvageable) and their factory closed down so buying more of the same model isn't really an option. Over the past year I have probably averaged 10 miles of walking per day and frequently move boxes with my feet so a year for me might be equivalent to substantially more for someone else so I wish I could refer you to the specific model.

Hi Matt! Is there a minimalist shoe you could recommend for someone who is on their feet all day? About me: i work retail, recently diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, and I’m pretty active outside of work too (though, not lately due to PF) Thank you!

So I have the non waterproof boulder boot. Love the fit, side for box and all but the soles started coming of at the toe RIGHT away on mine! Had to glue it back on so it's holding for now. There is no rock guard on the toe!????? Pretty basic need for a boot if you ask me. My terrain is rocky, full of cacti and dandy in spots. Stool, I like them very much. That toe/sole thing is a bummer however

ive owned a pair of these boots for a couple of months now and wear them 9 hrs 5 days a week and i would not call them a true work boot as the leather is more dress shoe like rather than all the other work boots i have owned over the past 20 years . i really wanted no heal / zero drop and while these boots give me that they lack the stability that would be perfect but i guess wanting a minimalist work boot is something that a company could jump on as i feel theres a need out there. they trap the heat a bit too and if you suffer from smelly shoes these will need anti spray or similar

I reckon your boots are gonna crack & sh!t themselves if you’re getting wet all the time. Just because they’re waterproof, doesn’t mean you can constantly soak them during strolls through the creek every day. They’re NOT WELLINGTONS. I can remember building houses and every time we had a major wet season, my boots wear fck’d pretty soon after from being wet all the time regardless of how I cared for them. Mind you, I didn’t really give them that much love as I was either too damn busy or too damn tired afterwards. But the point is, regularly soaking leather boots will make them crack and prematurely shorten their lifespan.

I regret getting these. The only boots I’ve ever had that will give you trench foot while sitting on the couch. Within minutes of putting them on my feet are sweating and pruny, and since only the liner is totally waterproof you need to wipe out the sweat after each wear lest the inside of your boot be a dark, sweaty Petrie dish. Also, the gusset only goes up to the 4th eyelet so these aren’t even waterproof up to the ankle. Pretty overpriced for being made in China

What would you suggest instead? Im looking for a quality barefoot boot or shoe with a wide toe box that wont break the bank and i live in the south so it can get pretty darn hot here. Also i work outside a good bit.
@TortillaChip521
@TortillaChip521 3 жыл бұрын
@@amandamathis4805 While they aren’t “barefoot” by any stretch of the imagination, Jim Green makes great wide toe box work boots that are arguable the best quality to price ratio, with a hard rubber sole better suited for working outdoors than on concrete. Pop your favorite insole in them and they’ll be comfortable and put up with years of abuse. Trying them on the first time was what made me realize I’d been buying shoes too narrow for my feet my whole life. I’m kind of in the same boat as you though, this was my first barefoot boot experience so I couldn’t in good conscience recommend you something I’ve never used. I also live in the south, and with all the heat and humidity there’s no way I would wear these in summer. It’s essentially a moccasin slipper with a rubber sole glued on, so exposure to heat a mud from working outside or intense hiking will shorten their lifespan significantly. I’m 6’ and 200lbs so even moderate activity will quickly put a hurting on shoes, YMMV. I won’t deny that they’re comfy, and the moccasin style helps alleviate the “clown shoe” look of most barefoot shoe profiles. They’re just what I’ll slip on if I need to go about town when there’s inclement weather and I don’t want to soak a pair of sneakers or trudge around in work boots. If I had to get their boots again I’d save $50 and get the standard leather ones on sale. I would never buy from them again considering they removed my 3 star review, which is why I’m a bit more scathing in youtube comments. I can only imagine what other reviews they’ve censored. Also their branding is pretty misleading when everything is stamped Boulder, CO but on the inside tongue tab is a big MADE IN CHINA. I’ve been looking into the vivobarefoot to try next now that I know to avoid anything with “waterproof” in the title as that’s almost certainly going to be lined with something that breathes as well as a plastic bag, and there are plenty of water resisting treatments for leather and fiber anyways. They’re at least handmade in Ethiopia and some of their older styles are on clearance, but it’s still your call as to whether $100-$150 for a pair of overbuilt slippers is worth it.

@@TortillaChip521thanks for your reply. I really appreciate your opinion. Im not a small person myself so i understand putting alot of wear on a pair of boots. I have extremely flat feet that tend to pronate which causes my knees and lower back to give me some problems. And I admit its hard for me to peel off $150 bucks or upwards for a pair of shoes. Especially ones that require me to just cross my fingers and hope for the right size because the only way to purchase most barefoot footwear is online. The thought has even crossed my mind on creating my own even though it has its obvious challenges. But i am definitely going to check out the jim greens. Thanks again.

@@amandamathis4805 no problem! Also with the Jim greens you can get them re-soled, so they’ll last until you wear a through the leather, vs most barefoots that are trashed once you wear out the sole. I’ve actually been looking into making my own boots too lately 😂 I got tired of getting cheap sneakers that fall apart every 6 months, and adopted a “buy once, cry once” policy. But biting the bullet on a $300 pair of US handmade boots and them arriving with the welt looking like it was stitched on by a drunk person was the straw that broke the camels back for me. There are some really good resources here on KZbin and on the leatherworker (dot) net forum for crafting your own shoes. Once you can find or make a pair of lasts (the foot shaped mold that the shoe is built around), you’ve got a template for life. At that point, $150 worth of leather is enough to make dozens of pairs of boots. If you get a sandal last, which has a flat bottom and no heel rise, you could make your own barefoot shoes in any style you want!

@@banwave6998 Why yikes? This is literally capitalism. There is a consumer need for a product and a group of investors put money into an idea to fulfil that need. Capitalism is great. The problem in the USA is we have a system of currency Fascism where our money is printed by a private bank and corporations are hell bent on keeping their stock price up so investors can fight the inevitable inflation caused by the private bank printing money and loaning it to the Treasury at interest.
