But Harriet was played by a Black person from the UK who explicitly trashed African Americans on a few different occasions. I think the question was based around black people who don't like African Americans yet want to monetize their struggle.

Dirg Ramsey yes I understand. It’s why they chose someone from overseas. So they can move forward with that trash of a movie. For Lena to sit there like it’s not problematic is crazy but not surprising. Solidarity is not only helping each other gain wealth it’s also being against blatant disrespect. These stories aren’t supposed to be “based on a true story “. They should also be told and dramatized by those of whom they are about.

I think the real point that people are trying to make about black-American roles going to non-American black people is that people are looking for some sort of balance. If black Americans weren't being bypassed so that black Brits, Africans, Latinos, blacks from the Caribbean could get these prominent black American roles and roles of everyday black American people, then there would be no issue. Black Americans are also not the only ones of the diaspora that take issue with black Americans or any black person portraying someone that is of a different culture. Nigerians are upset with Lupita Nyong'o right now because she, a Kenyan, is playing the part of a Nigerian in her upcoming TV show that she's producing. Kenyans and Nigerians are both from the same continent. If all black people, and all experiences of black people, are the same, then why do they have an issue with a fellow African playing that part? Representation does matter. It's like these studio execs and filmmakers think that "Oh, they all look the same, any of them will do."
@Jp-be9xx
@Jp-be9xx 4 жыл бұрын
Why are we complaining about which black person plays the part of another black person? We should be happy because at a point that role would have went to another race. It's all about the right person for the job. Acting is partly about playing someone that you're not and embracing it. Do you see white folks complaining about a white American playing a Britt or vice versa? It's so petty, divisive and counter productive. I'm Jamaican and i've seen black Americans get plenty of roles playing Jamaican characters, which I don't mind as long as they do a good job and get the accent right.

@@Jp-be9xx It's that they are just literally giving new British actors leading roles. It's to a point where we know the lead role is not going to be black Americans in certain movies. Black Americans are always locked out of things we created or protested for.

@kelvin aku Of course the entirety of the Nigerian population is not upset with Lupita being chosen to play that role. Just like not every single black American is bothered by non Americans playing black American roles. But there are some Nigerians who are bothered by that. Cynthia Erivo has even expressed multiple times on Twitter how disappointed she is when she sees Nigerian roles going to non Nigerians. And it's because people of every culture and race (white people included) like to see people of that same culture represented and utilized in the arts and media.

I also find it interesting that these black content creators and journalists don't want to address the true issue that black Americans have with Cynthia Erivo - it's that she has a problem with black Americans. Lena especially is very active on social media, so I'm sure she's very much aware of what the conversations has been in regards to Cynthia's anti black American tweets, and her retweeting anti black American comments from other non black American people. I think that it's a waste to have Cynthia on programs, or bring her up, if these people with platforms do not address that particular issue. She was the one who judged other people's nationality, not us. She expressed and has supported others' comments which state that: black Americans do not have a culture; black Americans have ghetto accents, black Americans are jealous of Africans. She has also tweeted how disappointed she is when she sees Nigerian roles going to people who not Nigerians. She has tweeted that black Americans aren't real Africans. So, the "We all black" sentiment that Lena is trying to push isn't believed by the woman who was chosen to portray, in film, one of the most revered and important black American figures in history.

The US filmmakers choose UK folk, because we are cheaper to hire and because your Actors Union is extremely powerful and demand better wages for US actors which the UK doesn't have. Secondly, the quality of acting in the UK and the schools there, particularly RADA are highly respected institutions for performing arts long before movies were being made. Thirdly, the UK is a big market outside of the US we have a shared language and getting actors from their attracts money and sales from the UK. Fourthly ,the US has started a trend of film in poor former Soviet countries because it's cheaper to do than do it in the US and flying actors out from the US is costly so they cherry pick them from Europe because it's local. Lastly, the British movie industry is powerful, although it can't compete with Hollywood it is in and around the top film producing nations in the world.

African American women are very protective of our experiences, history, and stories. We have been cast aside and our stories have been minimized, frowned upon and ignored. I can understand that it may feel like a betrayal for this pattern of exclusion to happen again in the telling of our own stories, like this one. Black UK actors' talent shouldn't be discounted but the right African American actors with the blood of slaves flowing through their veins and the stains of slavery and police brutality covering their everyday existence would have been much more powerful. I really, really, really wish they'd chosen any one of the hundreds of powerful African American actors. This makes me appreciate Tyler Perry a little more. I really wish people would stop calling it divisive when people bring up black British actors playing Black American roles. It may be an uncomfortable conversation but at least unpack it and understand where people are coming from versus weeping under the rug, being dismissive and treating Black Americans as nothing unique.. I think the best actor should get the part regardless of ethnic origin but I also think ignoring people's concerns doesn't help, if anything it deepens the divide. ALSO, can we stop defining American Blackness by our interactions with Law enforcement? I think that's what's missing, we are being treated as these nonspecific oppressed people instead of as an actual ethnic group with history, culture, and identity beyond what police think when they stop us. Yes we have shared experiences but thats only skin deep. That reduction is what's insulting and I think is the root of people having an issue with so many brits playing black Americans. We are not just a struggle we are a people.

Is it enough to celebrate having more successful black people that look like you if technically you're still coming in last? Has your story really changed? Why is it divisive for that to be explored? It should be handled gently but I don't get why that's an invalid question to raise when you look at the data and know history. @@tylineburgos8879 you've raised valid and wonderfully framed questions but these are rarely the questions being asked and certainly not the frame with which they are offered. just look at this comment section smh when we make other blk ppl the problem, it's a poverty mindset because white supremacy makes us believe there is only room for one. even as we advocate for ourselves (blk americans), we have to reject that myth at all times.

@@tylineburgos8879 for context most immigrants outperform their ethnic american born peers. mexicans immigrants, for example, have higher educational outcomes than mexican americans. i say that to say there is a broader, more complex conversation than "africans are taking my spot" which, in my estimation, is the dominant frame of the conversation. i agree that ethnic differences among blk ppl should be acknowledged, but they should also be celebrated and i dont think believing in the need for and benefit of diasporic unity implies we are a monolith.

Plenty black American actress have bodied “singing” Roles that aren’t singers.. so not sure what that’s got to do with it. Angela Basset, Regina King, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Taraji Henson, etc are all GREAT American actresses and in shape.

Joel Brown playing Africans in Americans movies? Are you actually reading what you’re typing. Explain how my point is invalid pls? What has the distributor got to do with what we’re discussing. Birth of No Nation is an African film produced by Americans. Should Africans throw a fit towards Americans for producing a film that has no relations to them? Smh.. Anyway, you said when have I seen Will Smith play an African in a African based film, like WS is the epitome for every Black actor. Forest whitaker played Idi Amin.. again should Africans feel a certain way as someone from a different Atlantic is playing an African dictator and not promote an actor within Africa to do that role. Do me a favour pls.

As an example the depiction of Harriet Tubman in the 2019 movie, was disrespectful and full of untruths and an “black” actor from America a descendent of ADOS would have an entirely different approach...

With the little roles being done, what are Black American Born actors left to do? Those same British Actors are not stepping back and away from those shows. So all of this talk is BS.
