Thank you for honestly representing how much, time, effort, planning, and fabric you put into this project. So many tutorials (particularly on weaving/rugs) gloss over those aspects. The precision, measuring, cutting, making the tape, ironing are the key to this professional result. There's nothing wrong with "rustic" rag rugs, made with rough cut/torn fabric strips the irregularities are part of their beauty. Seeing your project reinforces that it is important to have realistic expectations. Perfection requires extra effort and planning.

Next time you make one of these rugs (which I must say, are VERY beautiful!!), and you're struggling to find enough denim, go to your local charity shops, and ask them to save all the pairs of jeans that are not good enough for sale which would only end up in the rag bags. If you offer to pay more than the rag man, they'll happily save them for you. I ended up with about 50 pairs of jeans when I was looking for denim for a project by doing this, and it only cost me about £5 for the lot!!

My choice is secondhand, to save the denim going into landfill, and I have no thoughts about 'where they have been', once I've washed and cleaned them thoroughly. I like to 'rescue' old clothing and turn it into something useable. That's just my preference. I do save a lot of money that way...just sayin ;-)

Thank you for your tutorial! I'm in the process of making my own rug now, following your directions. I bought four pairs of jeans (largest sizes I could find, just in case) at the thrift store for $10 (USD), used a seam ripper to take them apart, ironed all of the pieces, and am now in the process of cutting the strips. I bought some cotton rug warp (yarn) online, practiced tying a knot to keep it taut, and selected a rack in my apartment to use when I get to the weaving step. Thank you for your great video! I'm excited to see how my rug turns out, though it might be a while before it's finished. There are a lot of steps!

I love weaving, and it's really easy to make a simple Loom as you did here... Taking something that is no longer good for the use it was intended for, and creating something that is, is so satisfying! This smaller version, is great for Placemats, and many smaller uses.. Well done!!! ❤

Figuring out a shuttle and how to create a “shed” would be so helpful. For the shuttle you could sand down a paint stick and use a dremel to drill out an eye equal to the width of the strips with just a bit of give. For the shed you could use a wide yard-stick. Weave it between the waft vertically and twist it horizontally to get a channel the push which the shuttle can slide. Great work! I’d love to do this, maybe making 2 and sewing them as a living-room area rug.

Absolutely brilliant using an upright wardrobe rack! I've been using picture frames and leaning them at an angle (I sit on the floor). Your wardrobe rack allows for a longer piece as well as a lighter weight and vertical placement that is easier on the back.

You did a beautiful job! It's such a wonderful looking carpet. Congratulations on being so creative and thinking of new ways to do things. I have sympathy on finding out how much denim it takes to do a project - as I am crocheting a round ball-shaped cat bed from cut up blue jeans. One pair of jeans got me about 1/5 of the way into the project. I need 4 more pairs of jeans. A suggestion for weaving in future: the string you used for the warp threads looks like it is cotton. The cotton thread is not as strong as the denim. Over time, those strings are the weak link of your rug. Be careful washing it. Be careful running the vacuum cleaner over it. A stronger string material would be ideal. I know this because my mother used cotton warp in her rag rugs made on a loom - and the denim lasts forever but the warp gives out. Treat it kindly and you'll enjoy it a very long time. Thank you so much for sharing!

@@diannenaworensky6698 I read that 50/50 blend of Polyester / Cotton loom warp is stronger by far. I'm not a synthetic fan, but if you want it to not break over time, synthetic will last longer. I searched under Rug Warps - Loom Weaving and found some weaving companies that specialize in selling warp. (My mom's decades old rugs are all coming apart from the cotton warp - but the denim fabric is still super sturdy. It's worth sourcing stronger warp.)

Your rug is impeccable! It came out perfectly! I see a lot of cool projects using old jeans, but all my old jeans are stretch denim and not very stable. I can get around this by adding lightweight stabilizer for quilting or sewing projects, but for weaving, I worry the spandex fibers would compromise the shape and structure. I have made things out of other garments, though. Weaving is so great for using up all kinds of fibers! While a lot of people are inspired and motivated to make crafts in a whirlwind weekend of fun, these types of scrappy projects are really the sort of thing that are stop-and-go tests of patience, because it often takes several years just to accumulate the materials (if you're sourcing it all from your own waste), so they are just perpetually in a state of ongoing. I admire your dedication to chronicle the entire process! Watching you cut everything with scissors made my hands hurt and reminded me of when I made my first quilt by cutting out triangles by hand 💀 For fast strip cutting, a rotary cutter with acrylic ruler and cutting mat would help a lot! If you want a way to keep the denim strips from opening up during weaving, you could stick them together with a water-based glue stick, and the glue will wash out in the laundry.

This is such a good idea for reusing jeans. Jeans are hard for companies to reuse the material and it costs so much energy to make them including a lot of water from what i hear. But that rug turned out so beatiful it makes me want to make one. You have a great talent and could probably make some money from that. That rug will hold up for a while i believe. Whoa... for those of us in the United States who do not have a comfort level with the metric system, 175 meters is just short of the length of TWO FOOTBALL FIELDS!!! THAT is a HUGE amount of work! Your project turned out beautifully but I have anxiety for you that, after all that work, the cotton string may not be sturdy enough, & your beautiful work will start to come apart. The good things is, you know how to fix it, so if you inspect the rug periodically, you should be able to stay ahead of any catastrophes! Nicely done... thank you for sharing with us! It's a rag rug (räsymatto). In Finland, every home has something like this. They are made with looms(kangaspuut) at home. A good idea if you don't own a loom. I made the first carpets for my own home when I was 20 years old.

And very useful for me since my hubby has dozens of jeans he has messed up just a bit enough that they wont work for "work" but just for here around the farm way to many so now I have a good reason to cut them up and make them into something way better! (They are big jeans as well, 42x32? Just massive amount of denim waiting there)😆 Love your rug!
