Golota was easy pickings for Lewis & Tyson but he clubbed Bowe like a baby seal. Over the years officiating has completely tarnished Olympic boxing. The referees constantly ruin fights through unnecessary interference, and the judging is horrendous. Holyfield, Jones, Mayweather are just a few who were deprived of gold since '84 . Bowe was not hurt badly and still had an opportunity to win this bout.

Next to him in fthe top 10 u can find: Louis, Dempsey, Marciano, Johnson, Holmes, Foreman, Tunney, Liston, Frazier, Charles...he never faced an opponent at the top of his condition with just 3 exceptions: Rahman, McCall and Vitaly and he lost with the first 2 and was lucky with the third. The noticeable difference between these 2 fighters, is that unlike Lewis, Bowe also likes to stay busy when fighting inside with short sharp hooks & upper cuts, where as Lewis goes for the clinch without throwing many punches on the inside at all. All the U.S. boxers that took the Gold in '88 had military backgrounds (Jones Jr.'s father was military, though, Jones lost to a South Korean native--home court advantage). I've seen this fight thruout the years.. today is the first time I really LOOKED AT this fight. I will say this, we all know it was terrible refferee! But look closer at the styles and how they measured up at the time.. had this been a pro fight, i had Bowe ahead on points. Mainly from the continued deposit of body shots to Lewis's right side. Bowe fought like a pro and not an amature. In a 10 round bout, they would have taken their toll, i don't care what anybody says. I like Lewis, and i think it would have been a great fight! But i think Bowe did himself the greatest diservice by not taking this fight. At that point in time, Lewis's mettle hadn't been tested in a pro fight by a big heavyweight that could bang. And Ray Mercer (years later), was no Riddick Bowe let me tell you!

I hate fussy refs like this, constant interfering when not much bad is happening. I'm not a fan of either boxer but it is clear as day that Bowe was robbed here. He won the first round comfortably and probably loses the 2nd round because of Lewis' aggression, if the rest of the round went in the same fashion. Bowe took a few good shots but never left his feet or looked that hurt. He deserved for it to go to the deciding round.

It's safe to say that Bowe won the first round and Lewis won the second round. Lewis would go on to be known for some lethargic starts in his boxing matches as a pro and then turning it on after being hit a few times. Lewis came out in round two like he was a man possessed.

First, amateur fights are often stopped much much earlier that professional fights because these guys are much younger, and the idea is not to burn them out before the pros. Go watch rounds 2, 5 and especially 7 of that second fight. The punch stat numbers at the end of round 7: I don't know if I've EVER seen more one-sided numbers in a heavyweight championship fight. Truly horrific beating at the hands of Golota- the ref and Bowe's corner did him no favors by allowing him to keep going out there and taking those kinds of heavy shots, one right after the other...
