Lenovo’s handheld gaming PC boasts detachable controllers, an 8.8” QHD+ display and the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU with RDNA 3 integrated graphics as the competing Asus ROG Ally. This is a Windows 11 device that can run any Windows emulator or game client you like, and even turn into a tablet or tiny desktop PC. It has a built-in kickstand, mouse emulation for the right joystick and a case is included. It also competes with the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch as well as Windows gaming handhelds like those from OneXPlayer, GPD and Ayaneo.

I have a deck, maybe as I am getting older I just couldn’t deal with the screen size. Too small, was always feeling strained, and or holding it super close (ie. Elden Ring etc). This new screen size is great for us Gen X gamers, and as a person with big hands, I don;t mind the size. Plus i usually play on planes or traveling and will use a XBOX elite controller anyway. Deck is going to my son and I am rocking the Go.

is the go powerful enough for games like new assassins creed mirage? warhammer, diablo, etc? Or should I just go for a laptop? I am in a space limited, e350 van as I will be traveling to teach around the country. Wanted something that can game, isnt huge like the desktop my kids built me, can do ms word, excel, watch movies.

Thank you for this review. I love my LLG currently though I do tend to use my 3070 Laptop for heavy gaming, but being that I play so many small games having a nice handheld is great. Some people talk about the size and I get that, but if I -did- want a small device, I'd probably get a pocketable 640x480 gameboy looking thing you can find around.

Many of these Handheld Gaming PCs can also double as desktop PC replacements. Dock them to an eGPU, switch power profiles and bam!

If have any intent to use as desktop... just get PC or laptop. For same price will get laptop with better specs and software support, accept handheld form factor... with added eGPU cost... will get laptop labeled "GAMING" plus RGB LEDs... or just build proper workstation/gaming rig/media center.

@@mindaugasstankus5943 This argument of "just get a desktop PC" is non-sense. It was used for Laptops that could be desktop replacements and is now being used for handheld PCs. The primary appeal of Laptops over desktops is because they are portable and that's what people pay for, however laptops second use case can be desktop replacements. The same for handheld gaming PCs, their primary appeal is gaming on the go as it is held in one's hands, which is what people are paying for however they can just like laptops be used as desktop replacements as well.

A perhaps overlooked benefit of all these handhelds over the past 4 or 5 years is it might put some thoughts into Nintendo's mind when it comes to the design and specification of the Switch 2 (or NG or Next Gen or whatever) which is whispered to possibly be a second half 2024 release. Ideas? Specs and price. I expect it to be $350 to $400 and quite a bit more powerful than the original - but fall some way short of the PS5 and new Xbox. These handhelds will be food for thought for Nintendo... if they are at all interested in their competition. After all most Nintendo Switch software is X platform. (Over 85% I've read) I suspect they will want to be compared favourably on price and specs to the best of these independent handhelds... at least for launch.
@elmalloc
@elmalloc 10 ай бұрын
Nintendo doesn't give a shit about hardware specs. There is a reason they are better than Sony and Xbox, it's exactly because of that. Their software is generally superior. They do just enough. It will never be about those that care about graphics in which case the PC will crush Sony/Xbox. It leaves them in the odd spot of being a customer base for those that want great graphics but can't afford it.

Nintendo needs to take some inspiration from all these new handheld PC's. Seeing what is possible in a handheld nowadays, Nintendo will need to up their game, or they will lose the corner of the market that they've dominated for so long now
@TonyJenn
@TonyJenn 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, but be realistic. The majority of Nintendo's audience aren't obsessed with specs. simplicity is still their game.
@PaulRoneClarke
@PaulRoneClarke 10 ай бұрын
@@TonyJenn That is a good point. Some of the competition are very easy to use and have 85% of the games Nintendo has. None of the Nintendo exclusives of course, but most of the rest. The new Steam Deck is excellent and quite reasonably priced. Plays those rogue likes, platformers, card battlers and indie games. As well as some of the best AAA games that Nintendo doesn't play. I mean Nintendo can choose to ignore the competition - and they might - they have huge customer loyalty and brand recognition - but I suspect it will play a part in their thinking.

I own one of these. Would not recommend except for extremely niche circumstances. Would strongly recommend that you just keep your handheld/mobile gaming to non-windows systems, and buy yourself a decent notebook, Bluetooth mouse, and an Xbox controller for your gaming on the go. You aren't carrying this thing anywhere without a backpack anyway.

I will be honest it depends on what games you want to play. Seems like games like Call of Duty are getting perma bans on the Ally and other windows handhelds due to the software they have to run to make it handheld friendly. So honestly the limited library isn’t really that big of a deal. This is coming from someone who sold their OG deck, and has had a GPD Win 3, AYANEO 2021 Pro, AOKZOE A1, and ASUS Ally. Some I still have some I don’t, I am grabbing the OLED deck and will more than likely stick to it.

I've been a Playstation gamer for many years now so I haven't bought games on Steam in a long time. Legion Go has native game pass support so that's what's intriguing to me. I don't have a gaming PC either so this would be my way of dipping my toe in it again. Not sure if it's worth it, but I can't stop looking into it. Steamdeck Oled also seems really nice and I like owning games and not having them disappear on me like on a subscription. Tough choice. Then again at home I have my PS5, so is it even needed for the few times I need to game some other place?

Lol this is the ONLY "hand held gaming device" I considered BECAUSE I could FINALLY get my modern umpc via taking off the grip controllers. Just funny it took portable gaming to do it... A LOT better carrying this, a small keyboard, and mouse than my 16in. Asus Studiobook (32gb ram) yet can still run Fusion 360 (cad). 😂 I'm sorta looking into gaming a little and most likely be using a wireless xbox controller rather than the controller grips. Better for "ergonomics" I suppose too.

The software on this is worse than "a work in Progress", I was able to fully corrupt Windows by just disabling the controllers. Turns out their intermediate controller emulation layer that they use to allow them to connect and disconnect is super flaky and when these go into power save mode it just keeps freaking out and sending tons of mixed signals and breaking some games if you want to use a different controller. So I tried to disable them in the task manager and that made Windows BSOD on boot. That is a FEAT. Windows isn't the most stable thing, but... yeah. And the controllers are entirely too big for me. The d-pad is barely usable and the triggers are mushy and hard to press if your hands aren't huge and you need a lower grip. This was so close, but it's not a workable proposition. Shame, too, because the tablet itself is really nice and it has great performance. Maybe it'll get better, since a lot of the problems are fixable in software, but with so much competition I'm not sure it'll get a second chance. I wonder if it's worth trying to mod those controllers to improve the d-pad, though. They are not selling replacements, so that's a lot to risk considering the software refuses to work without them.

I just sent mine back to Lenovo. It's a nice unit but it has its flaws as a first gen device. I honestly find Windows handhelds to be annoyingly difficult to use unless you're up for that challenge. I also found the portrait defaulted display to cause issues with a few games and I hope Lenovo changes this in future models. One big annoyance is sleep mode where battery drain is higher than I would want on something like this and the controllers have to be reattached every time the unit and/or controllers go to sleep. There's just no way to use them until they get attached again and then detached so for gamers, this will cause some headaches. I think Lenovo did a great job with this device overall, however for users who just want to pick up a handheld and start playing games they'd be better off with a Steamdeck or Switch.

The biggest problem here is that it is a Lenovo product. This is also currently reflected in the fact that Lenovo is simply not able to provide up-to-date drivers in a timely manner. The driver is about a month old and many games show a warning that the driver is not up to date. Of course you can also install drivers directly from AMD. But this is only possible via detours. And that shouldn't be necessary for a $700 product!

anyone buying these handheld gaming machines. want 2 things. power and turn key. there is a reason why a lot of ppl dont get into gaming pc/ gaming laptops. its having to deal with updates to OS, drivers fro graphics cards, then u got like all the different storefronts to play games (thankfully steam is still king) with the different log ins. even after all that u need to go into settings and start messing around to ensure ur getting the experience u want with whatever hardware u got. its far from what console gaming does. steam deck is thankfully getting closer to being turn key, but the instant u need to take 30mins to hours troubleshooting on why a game wont launch/run or why its crashing etc... its a bad day. the thing cant even run red dead 2 at 30 fps. thats sad. here is the thing. anyone looking at this. just buy a series S with a X screen....save a lot of money. hell get gamepass since u saved soo much money

Bought my Legion Go, on Launch Day, at MicroCenter, w/ 2Tb Upgrade. It has replaced my Razer Edge WiFi. I fact, I've clocked far more hours on the LGo, between the two, in far shorter, a timespan. I really dig it. I turned the speakers up, using the on-board, Realtek Eq. I flashed my bios, changed VRAM setting, and AMD Drivers, as many Early Adopters, had to. But Lenovo has been front and center, providing updates, and timely news, as well as early access, to adventurous tinkerer. But they are improving the Software, Firmware, and Experience, all the time. I'm rewarding them, appropriately, with my continued faith, in this fun, functional, sturdy Beauty! Don't sleep on the Leon Go. It's going to rule this Handheld Generation, in short order.

Yeah, it's good, better than the Asus ROG Ally imo, because it has a touchpad and two USB-C ports unlike the Ally, but I still think Valve has something special with the Steam Deck OLED. I mean, 2560x1600 is a bit over kill on a screen this small and 1280x800 like on the Steam Deck would be a bit too low resolution; I think 1920x1200 at 120 hz would have been the best choice, especially given most Windows handhelds can't get good battery life and are still more expensive than the Steam Deck, even the OLED model. Plus, Windows 11 still sucks on devices without touchpads or mice.

Thanks Lisa! This thing is being killed by Windows in daily use. Steam OS is A GODSEND for a handheld gaming console. Painless UI, painless in and out. No Windows quirks. And I'm A Windows guy since 3.1. Nope, not on a handheld. Battery life sucks compared to the Deck. FPS mode is meaningless as I can just carry a small portable Bluetooth mouse. I would love Detachable controller on the Deck but for when I'm docked so I can play with the same controls, that's all.

Nope, not for me. I absolutely hate Linux when I had a steam deck and found it very frustrating. I’ve been a windows user off and on since 1994 and despite it’s obvious quirks, I would choose it any day over Steam OS

@@CandysChannel What exactly were your issues? I have my SD for 2 months now and didnt run into a single issue with SteamOS so far, quite the opposite, it makes the SD far better to use, because everything is so well integrated, especially the overlay menus.

11:51 Has Lenovo mentioned anything about addressing this in the future with their software instead of the user relying on registry edits? I am seriously considering this over the ROG Ally and this problem might just tip the scales in ROG's favor. I like old games and don't want to be doing a ton of registry edits to run them. 13:50 Yep! That's me. The reason I am considering a hand held gaming PC over a Surface tablet is user upgradability/repair and market trends. With tablet pcs never really catching on, APUs getting a firm hold, and handheld gaming PCs taking off, choosing a tablet now seems like a bad choice. Changing out RAM, storage, and battery all seem easier in handheld PCs. And with the gaming community adopting them the secondary support will be there for the more popular devices even if the companies won't be. You just won't have that for what few tablet PC's there are out there. And a device like this COMPLETELY blows Android tablets out of the water as far as capability goes. I am so fed up with Android for tablets at this point that I don't even want to look at any other devices. Will a device like this be perfect? No. But I just use tablets for video and light web browsing. I think when you compare the price of a decent android tablet to the Legion Go or ROG Ally I would be better off choosing a handheld PC. Side note. It's good to see this channel is still around. Watched it a ton several years ago to help me pick a laptop and finding it again for this was a pleasant surprise. Keep up the great work.

I don't understand wanting to lay it down and use detachable controllers. If I have to lay it down to play, I'd much rather have a much more powerful laptop. If they'd made usable gaming trackpads on this thing, it would have been cool, but that trackpad they added is pretty terrible. Almost every game I play I don't want to use a joystick, so the only handheld gaming device which works at all is the Steam Deck.

I brought this as Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows 10 on my Intel i7 Mac Mini. And this Legion Go is smaller than my Mac Mini while it is portable and a lot more powerful. I can also use it with all the accessories for my Mac Mini, including the eGPU. In the future, I would like to see lower VRAM setting available so that I can set more RAM for Star Citizen while I plug in my eGPU. As a gaming handheld, I am still getting use to the built-in controllers. Those sticks are very sensitive in comparing with my Xbox controllers.

I really wish Microsoft hadn't hobbled this category by signing an exclusivity deal with Qualcomm for Windows on ARM. Just imagine this with a modern Tegra SoC inside.

I recently retired from my FT job, other I travel teaching civilians and law enforcement, perishable skills. My original traveling rig was my F550 overland build, hauling an airstream. In my airstream, I have a 48in LG CX paired to a ps5 for movie watching as I have a folder of bluerays when off grid, and I had a desktop tower my kids had built for me. Now I recently switched to a E350 4x4 can rig, and a smaller cargo trailer in back. I just got a LG gaming monitor, a small one, but still larger then a laptop. Debating if I should get this, since it can use ms word, excel, and etc. Can I use an xbox bluetooth controller with this? I am looking to get the new assassins creed mirage, and other games through steam gaming client. Now is this powerful enough for that, or should I look into a laptop? Space is limited too, so a desktop is out of the question. I want something that can keep playing current and future games for at least 2-3 years without being out paced. I wish I was more tech savy!
