Did you ever figure out what was causing the corruption at Windows boot? I'm thinking it's possibly GRUB. I've been considering installing Linux on a separate hard drive and booting from it completely separately. But as it stands I can't do anything with my Windows 8.1 install, since even the advanced menus have that same problem.

What Linux distro are you using? On mine it's (Debian based) Kali Linux. I've heard of people using Arch Linux that have the same problem. I don't know what causes this, I wish I knew so I'm still waiting for someone smarter than me to come up with a solution. Surprisingly it's not T440p related, because my Clevo W230ST (not even a Lenovo) has the same issue.

I'm running Arch, yeah. So do you think this problem would resolve itself if I restored a Windows MBR?

I'm not sure, but I know the problem goes away when you re-install Windows. I left my Linux partition intact, re-installed Windows (so MBR was reset by the Win-installer) and it was gone. As soon as I used 'chroot' through a live DVD to get Grub back installed, it had the scramble issue. This was on my Clevo W230ST! On the T440p when I tinkered with the MBR, it completely went crazy and refused to boot (not even from a USB or CD drive) until I physically removed the hard drive (a Crucial M500 960GB SSD). Only one way to find out the cure right ;). Maybe you could get a clean drive and play around with a few things. Let me know if you find out what's causing this behaviour or if you find something new.

***** I just reinstalled and the problem is gone. I think I'm just going to use Linux through VMWare Workstation to make things easier. Good to know I wasn't alone in the problem, though.

If you're not having issues in a VM and you have enough RAM available, then I guess you're fine. It's a shame we're not able to dual boot because of some freak bug though. Perhaps I should check with Kali Linux or Arch Linux forums to see if they know more about this problem.

Are you saying that this "ticking" sound is the problem? I have the same T440p and I have different sound. it's coming from left top of the keyboard, so I assume it from fan but like digital noise. did you experience any of these problem?
@LEXMICHDEKAMMERA10 жыл бұрын
What I'm saying is in the description of the video. I can't remember sounds or noise. My advice: return the notebook and buy a brand that's reliable and never buy anything from Lenovo again, it's rubbish, especially the T440p!

How about the hard disk noise ? I heard a lot of complaint about e431 and e440. how about u?
@LEXMICHDEKAMMERA11 жыл бұрын
As soon as I got it I switched the HDD for an SSD, so I never booted the HDD that came with it. I can't tell anything about noise, sorry. I don't think a laptop with such potential should be used with an 'old school' type HDD, because that becomes a bottleneck ruining the experience and speed you paid big money for. I'm using a Crucial M500 960 GB SSD. Also available in 120, 240 and 480 GB. In my opinion they are the best combination of reliability, speed and price.

I have a problem with the t440p I have installed on it Kali Linux (lvm encrypted) after successfull installation it reboots. After reboot machine can't boot the OS. Thats not all it can't boot any CD/DVD so I can't install OS again. In BIOS i have turn the booting from CD/DVD on. Is anyone have this type of issue ?

As you can read in the comment underneath the video, I have the same problem. You can bypass this by not altering the MBR. Install it like you normally do, but leave the MBR untouched! Just flag the partition with the Grub-bootloader as boot partition. It's not the way it should work, but I think there's something wrong with Kali/Debian and the UEFI BIOS stuff. Anyway, I can't seem to figure out what's wrong, so I guess we're going to have to ask more T440p users what they are experiencing. Perhaps ask the Kali-community for some advice, I will as soon as I have my replacement. Maybe something you could try to do; let another Linux distro (Ubuntu based for example, to rule out Debian) alter the MBR and tell me if it also got you boot-looped.
