This laptop pretty much checks most if not all the boxes you want in a 15-in thin and light laptop. Let me know what you think. So far, my favorite 15-in for 2019. You can pick one up here: Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2: Lenovo.vzew.net/7k4dy

Just for info, you can have 8TB on your Lenovo Thinkpad Extreme, by using 2 4TB ssd's. I am assuming the bios allows it. For about $800, instead of $2200 like Apple charges, and you can put the base amount in an external drives, Apple keeps it for themselves.

I wish they had a Yoga 2-in-1 version of this. I'd like a non-unltrabook CPU and discrete graphics in a 2-in-1 body. Lenovo made a workstation (P40) that I wanted that met those two criteria and discontinued it before I could save up enough money to buy one. I invested my money in a desktop for video editing but would really like a 2-in-1 as I have to read/browse a lot of PDF documents and think it would be much easier to do this in tablet portrait mode plus I could draw images to include in my videos more easily. If you read this comment please pass it on to Lenovo.

good review. a minor point, I think your cinebench R15 score is a bit off. at 6:52, you quote a 765. but this CPU should be north of 1000-1100. Maybe it was doing background Windows updates or something. I think the quad-core 7700HQ used to get very close to 700. I could be wrong.

@j_lode
@j_lode 4 жыл бұрын
@@selespeed3 the processors in the yoga (even the i7) operate at a slower clock speed. The X1 also had an optional i9, with hyperthreading, giving it 16 logical processing cores. The yoga doesn't. The yoga has a maximum of 16gb memory whereas the x1 has 32. Also, you can't upgrade the yoga's memory (it's soldered to the board). It depends on the application really. The x1 is more of a workstation ultrabook, for labor intensive tasks.
@selespeed3
@selespeed3 4 жыл бұрын
@@j_lode thank you for such fine explanation. such professional answer from you. i bet this Xtreme is also a lot more expensive than yoga. i have the old ibm T43 with fingerprint sensor. is this Xtreme in the same class of T43 equivalent in the 2005 era?
@j_lode
@j_lode 4 жыл бұрын
@@selespeed3 not really. The X series has traditionally been the more "mobile" variant (smaller, lighter, etc) whereas the T series is more of a traditional workstation. My previous ThinkPad was a T440s. It was compact and served me well for 7 years. For my usage requirements (lots of multiprocessing, lots of memory) I couldn't find a better T-series model. The X1 extreme beat the entire field. But, it is expensive. The model I got was $2300, with a Lenovo holiday sale and military discount. If you don't NEED all that power, a yoga or t-series will work just fine.
@selespeed3
@selespeed3 4 жыл бұрын
@@j_lode i do most work at home and do not require such powerful cpu capability. ,y requirements are multi displays support and strong graphic (games sometimes) and fast refresh for streaming quotes. so i think the yoga would just suffice. although i dont really use the tablet but i don think i have a choice of just simply a laptop with 4k display. or is there any? the Y940 15" is very appealing i have set sight on it. do you know the price of this? I am very impressed with IBM build quality. it is the best plastics i have ever seen on laptops. i think Lenovo carries on with the same quality.

Where the power cord plugs into the laptop, is that power socket connection soldered onto the motherboard? My last lenovo failed because the power socket loosened off the motherboard and I couldn't fix it. It would be great if the socket was attached to the case and connected to the motherboard via flexible wire to prevent damage to the motherboard by pulling on the cord.

I had this laptop for a week and returned it because of the loud fan noise, even if you don't do anythin gpu or cpu intensive. I was also disapointed of the battery-life, it lasted about 2h30 for simple programming tasks or watching youtube video's, even with lowering the brightness. I was using ubuntu on it. Looks like it was more optimized to be used on windows where the battery laster a bit more. I think the fans should be on the side to avoid heating the rest of the computer (I had the OLED 4k version)

Excellent Review! What a great full featured Pro laptop. HDR and OLED options, yep. The days of a Pro 15-16" laptops are numbered. Talk about ports, the best keyboard, track-point, trackpad, there are all great, water resistant keys. Lots of monitor choices, lots of sales. Pen support, and "touch screen" that lays flat, yep. upgradeable ram, yep.x2 full thunderbolt x2 separate strong powersupply, much faster than usbc, and it saves those thunderbolt ports for other things. sd card slot and its full size, yep, ethernet dongle, real ethernet, not usb emulation. Headphone jack, yep, you never know :) Things to improve? Something in between full hd and 4k would be nice as would 3x2 aspect ratio for a 3000X 2000 pixel display. 97 wh battery would be nice. 8GB RTX 2060 and better cooling next year would be nice. A larger trackpad, and all metal version in different colors would be nice. Much better class leading speakers would be nice. Faster sd card reader would be nice. 4k60 webcam would be nice. upgradeable ssd, yep.x2 Standard 2 year warranty would be great.

POTENTIAL BUYERS OF X1 EXTREME GEN2 BEWARE!! I bought this laptop with the 4k non OLED screen version with 32GB RAM direct at Lenovo US website. One key feature is TB3 ports and their capability to add multiple monitors. There appears to be a serious problem with this model that it fails to drive USB-C monitors. I work at a company with a fully fledged IT department and owns dozens of Lenovo laptops. All USB-C screens we tested worked in ALL Lenovo laptops EXCEPT Gen 2. Lenovo so far did not care for a reply while our search on the forums indicate this is a problem faced by many buyers and sharing their frustration. Our IT department thinks it is LIKELY a hardware problem in that TB3 is on the mainboard and unless entire MB is replaced, it may be impossible to fix. Please be aware, and share your findings. This is a VERY expensive laptop and Lenovo should know better. While I have great respect for this channel, before reviewing this a 3 min browse over the net would point those issues that in my opion needs to be brought along. I bought this with very high expectations and for the purpose of editing 4k content on the go with the help of a 2nd monitor (USB-C) for timeline review and so far disappointed greatly. Thinking of returning and getting an alternative laptop.

Had one full spec upgrade. Returned it due to poor build quality, scratches easily and terrible battery life. Throttles often.

Andrew, you are so tough with your rating. Only 91% for this beauty. Full disclosure you don't work for Lenovo. Are you working for competition? If I don't see any laptop making 99% over next 5 years... I am gonna give you 88% and go watch some other KZbin techno videos. Just kidding. :) I am hooked to your wonderful visual arts that educates and informs so well so many people. "Never in the history of KZbin there was so much owed by many to so few, that is to say you and your team."
