With the Canon 90Ds release,I have received what feels like 100s of emails, comments, posts, and questions about how lenses that were sharp enough on the Canon 70D or 80D were sharper than what they were on the 90D, and that many users wanted to go back to those older cameras. There was also a lot of confusion about whether the lens format had any role, so I wanted to answer these questions, specifically exploring the role of pixel pitch vs. format and how they relate to image sharpness.
Also: KZbin compresses the images we use in the video, so what you see will be different than what I saw on my computer, but there are a few really important takeaways in this video:
1. It has much more to do with lens sharpness than format. When we use a crop camera compared to a full-frame camera with nearly identical pixel pitches and the same prime lens, they perform similarly.
2.Older & Zooms are not as sharp as Newer & Primes.
3. If your lens is sharp enough, high-resolution sensors will produce more detail than lower-resolving lenses.
4. If your lens is not sharp enough, using a lower resolution sensor (larger pixel pitch) will product sharper images due to diffraction limits.
Enjoy!

Despite your abhorrence for making these kind of videos I love them. In fact I love this information as a talking research point. It serves for doing more research into the subject matter. Thank you as always for helping to start clarifying a difficult topic.

dance2jam thank you for appreciating them. I don’t so much dislike these kinds of topics, I dislike the fallout. I’m just trying to be very specific as to why something happens on a topic of confusion. The videos are mostly unpopular, but at least it sets the record straight and viewers like you appreciate them

The list with the recommended lenses at 2:05 says "200mm f2.0 II USM". There is currently no Mark II of the 200mm f2.0.

Thanks! You forgot the link for the focusing chart. I searched and found it, but that one is printed in halftone, so it's mostly useless.

Once again a great informative video. I wish the A6600 had a flash as i’d upgrade to it from the a6500. I do document embedding photography for construction companies and while the A6500 is amazing in building with no electricity or light, I NEED the on body flash as I’ve found off body flashes aren’t fast enough and get too hot too quickly. The bigger the flash the less the recycle time but I don’t wanna carry around an AD600 lol. Minus the flash is the A6600 MUCH better in terms of the sensor than the A6500?

Once again Michael a lot of great info! I still seem to be wondering why newer versions of a lens, particularly a zoom lens, would be sharper. If the manufacturer has not changed the lens design why would the new one be better? The lens that comes to my mind is the canon 70 to 200 2.8 where they say the big change they made was new coatings for diffraction purposes and apparently everything else is the same. Puzzling to me.

I remember the 5D Mark 2 having larger pixels. I think that was how they described it when it went on sale. I've just recently sold that camera... But do you think the A7r 2 has a high pixel shift ? .. I'm not sure how you've found out the information of the cameras you've used. Really good video. thanks.

I think the reason people are getting less than ideal results out of a camera like the 90d is because they don’t understand how to shoot it. Canons crop sensors are about 2.6x smaller in terms of surface area than their full frame sensors. This means that if you multiply the 90d’s resolution (33 mpx) by 2.6 you will get the equivalent resolution of a full frame canon sensor, which in this case, is about 86 mpx. Put another way, the 90d’s pixel pitch is roughly equivalent to an 86 mpx full frame sensor. Higher resolution is more sensitive to handshake and motion of all types, meaning that if you are hand holding the camera, you have to shoot a faster shutter speed than you normally would. Also, in action scenarios you have to shoot faster shutter speeds as well or you will see motion blur sooner.

A very relevant video for megapixel explosion times! High megapixel cameras with a pixel pitch of 5 Micron or less need high quality lenses as a basic consideration. Now, when you talk about a smart phone with a tiny sensor having 100 megapixels .. wow!! I don't even know what to say .. how big are those file sizes I wonder? Anyone know?

Can you make a video please on how ff lenses perform on aps-c sensors? Meaning, can you include how to achieve same depths of fields?
@jarrod7465
@jarrod7465 4 жыл бұрын
you can't get the same depth of field unless you physically move closer to the subject. That's the trick.

@@jarrod7465 But why is it like that for APS-C cameras?

So what would I expect in image quality using the same lens on the 5D Mark IV and the 90 D? A 30 Megapixel full frame vs. a 32 Megapixel crop sensor. I assumed I would get very similar image quality but I was just out shooting with both these cameras getting a sunset shot and the 32 MP crop sensor just seems more noisy. Have you done any tests comparing these two? I would love to see them.

Pixel pitch on the 90D is tighter, And therefore requires higher resolving lenses. I’ve posted at least 6-8 different videos on the topic

Why didn't you show full frame f11 vs crop sensor f8 quality. That would have put to the test pixel pitch. Did I miss something?

A7III also has an anti-aliasing filter which will affect the sharpness compared to the A7RIV.

The AA filter sharpness is negligible- I’ve actually seen tests that have the A7iii as sharper than the A7r4, but with different focal lengths

I always thought apsc is the best bang for buck, especially with lenses. So basically an A6600 is an A7R4 just stuck in crop mode for about a 1/3 of the price. I know Im exaggerating, but am I?

This is the reason I've bought the 70-200mm f/ 2.8L IS mark III instead of mark II. Eventhough version 2 was sharp, I did notice a difference with mark III. It just did a tiny bit better on my 90D.
