Here's the great Leo Mckern giving a rare interview on The Gloria Hunniford "Sunday Sunday" Chat show 1989. Leo Mckern was actually Australian by birth and was afraid of flying so used to travel home by cargo ship, this is where he starts his conversation with Gloria Hunniford.

Story goes that Leo Mckern was physically nothing like John Mortimer had envisaged Rumpole, and he was therefore initially against McKern being cast. The first producer however, persuaded Mortimer to give him a chance, and being a fair natured type of chap, Mortimer agreed. McKern completely won him round. So much so, that when McKern passed away, Mortimer insisted there could be no further television episodes, because the on-screen Rumpole had died with McKern.

Who would have thought an Australian could be the quintessential English barrister at law but I have to admit he is perfect. Also saw him recently in A man for all seasons too playing the man of the current moment, 2020, as much as he was in the 1530’s Thomas Cromwell thanks to Hilary Mantel.

Much missed. One of the greats. Ms Hunniford has a terrible ear. McKern's Aussie accent is very clear, not as broad as it once was, but definitely present. Thankfully the cultural cringe largely disappeared in the 1970's and other Aussie greats like Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush proudly speak in public with their natural accent.

Defanged Absolutely spot on. The accent is completely there, but toned down. And it made Rumpole (and the other roles he played to great acclaim) so enigmatic and entrancing... and unique.

He was great in a fantastic little Aussie movie called "On our Selection" back in the early 90s.
