The last few years I’ve been revisiting my life through the lens of recently discovering my parents were both narcs. Dad an overt/neglectful and mom covert. My whole life i was sabotaged by mom and terrorized/bullied by dad (i just recorded 105 pages of odd experiences w them in childhood and adulthood) but somehow for most of my life i believed they loved me even if they hid it very deeeeeply. However, more recently after noticing their behaviors are textbook narc as described, it drove home the point that these people are awful and acted this way my whole life bc they are sick and loveless and empathy will NEVER find its place in their sick hearts so i can stop expecting it to show. The discovery and conclusion happened quickly for me but I deliberated long about going no contact. It IS amazing i came out so positive and motivated and genuinely joyous in life even through my entire relationship w them and beyond. I have pursued all my interests (i have many) to their natural conclusions, I’ve made great friends, etc but now not trying to get that recognition from my parents is liberating.
