A good introduction Marcus. I think I said start with sharpening and how to tune and fettle a plane. I can see you are getting his muscle memory going which will never leave him. I knew a carpentry lecturer who had a new intake of cocky kids. He made them fit a mortice lock. Only he made them do it with just a mallet and chisel. It took them all day to do one lock. The next day he explained to them, that if they weren't so cocky, he would teach them the easy way. Bits and brace and then power tools. They learned muscle memory with a mallet and chisel and a fair degree of respect.

Great that you are happy with the Faithfull No5, I would really like to see a close up and tear down of it. I have one and it's not been great. Instead of making things all my time has been spent trying to get each part of this plane to work properly. It's now confined to shooting board duties.

OKay I'll do that

What has been your main concern?

@@WallyboisWoodworking My comment sounded like a whinge, sorry!! The main issue is the frog casting where the two bolts and washers go through to the base. It's a mess, poorly cast and not well machined. The bolts and washers don't fit properly, there is no way to open up or close down the mouth. The machining of the interface between the frog and the base is quite poor. I've lapped the frog where the blade rests, again it was a very poor surface. The slotted screw that moves the frog is too large / under machined so the frog sits on it which changes the blade angle. I took this out because it's not really needed. Interestingly, I have a replacement faithful blade in my old no 4 plane. It is the same length as the one supplied in the no 5 so it must be the casting/design of the plane that's wrong. Also, the replacement blade is 3mm thick and weighs 130g but the one supplied with my no 5 is 1.8mm thick and weighs 96g. I think with more work and a new blade it will work well but I'm not convinced it's worth it.
