Ever since I read his 'War and Peace', when I was 14, it has been my favorite book. I have read it a few times since, in different phases of my life. Amazing oeuvre, Tolstoy is one of the greatest writers of all times. Interesting footage.

@@Akuyaku223 I looked this up and could find no source. Tolstoy was a Christian, he wrote a few books on the subject actually lol. but again, if this were true (and I very much doubt it), it would be based.

His flaws and hypocrisy makes me value the beauty of his literature even more because it validates him as a human being like all of us. If a human being can communicate such divine ideas... =)
@sansamman4619
@sansamman4619 3 жыл бұрын
His “flaws and hypocrisy” are what make him more than a normal human. He refused to play a role. He knew that all the beliefs had flaws in them. Christianity, Buddhism, Socialism, Capitalism…etc they all have their flaws, and if someone adheres to one of them, they in effect are fooling themselves. But what happens if you rationality is so strong, that you can see the problems immediately, yet you can not figure out a solution to these issues? Your life becomes unbearable, you do your best to be good person, but these things give you so much anxiety that you can not bear to be nice when someone makes you angry.

@@sansamman4619 nope. He was smart, but lack the knowledge to understand truly what he was rejecting from his life. Ideologies aren't at fault here, but he was. Or rather are we? we don't know the complexity of his real ideology, so we can't judge him or the past.

What kind of hypocrisy we are talking about ? Just read his last works . He was profound thinker and a prophet . His last writing on social reform it's a hidden codes and doctrines which still have to be observed

I love seeing him on video ! . I would not call him a hypocrite and infidel though . We are all on a journey through this fallen planet . Marriage struggles are real no matter how great the man. It is obvious also that the peasants felt his sympathy for them judging by the funeral. . And even at the end of his life, he actually did leave it all. His heart and struggles are mine as well. I’m enjoying reading his Confessions .

I'm currently reading the final chapter of the book of distinguished historian Kenneth Clark's 1969 TV series Civilisation, of which this is an excerpt. Clark wrote the scripts and is the person narrating this clip; he appears right at the end of the clip. The book is a collection of the scripts from this 13 part TV series. In the series he explores the way that art has influenced civilisation. I was prompted to search for this clip due to his observation that Tolstoy lived long enough to witness the beginnings of film, and was distinguished enough to be captured on film at the end of his life.

His wife was not demented. Tolstoy was a genius, but he wanted to sell the family’s fortune entirely. That would leave his children and grandchildren in poverty. Geniuses are often blinded to reality by their idealism. There is nothing wrong with a family trying to stop him from leaving them penniless. Yes, the poor suffered, but you should not leave your family without anything to help the poor. Then they are poor and starving. He was a genius though.

0:38 '... his doctrines are full of contradictions'. His doctrines are not, his personality and behavior may be but how is judging him instead of his 'doctrines' do anything for you other than giving you the lukewarm feeling that it is alright to be lukewarm [that taste about which God says will spit out of his mouth]. It is this blind obsession with judging others rather than looking at your own self, through the teachings of the other such as Tolstoy, that keeps the world stuck in the mud, waiting for some external agent, like the state, to yank you out of the lukewarm misery in which you've been wallowing, not understanding why you suffer.
