Truly bizarre representation of the purpose of that book. Tolstoy found that the common human endeavors such as science or were unfulfilling to him, as his question was much, much deeper. Tolstoy ultimately resolved the contradictions of with by embracing faith. Faith was the only thing that satisfied his questions, even though it sometimes left him without a definitive answer. It's very poignant and I read it both as an atheist and as a convert to Christianity.. The first time I was incredulous, the second time I understood his plight and his journey. In short, knowing some scientific thing like the reactions happening within stars does not give you meaning, purpose, or direction. Religion does that and says "Let the stars burn, let the sun set. Everything is taken care of for you. Go out and live!"

Thanks for great comment. I read Tolstoy's books, I must go read the Tolstoy journal slowly...at 80 some things fade. Thanks again for such clarity; you explain better than Peterson here. I know virtually nothing of Peterson. Avid reader since 5 years old I discover all the time that I may have scratched many good books/writings, but wow! I have not begun did I? There is so much out there left to read. w

Nothing is said to you, [O Muḥammad], except what was already said to the messengers before you. Indeed, your Lord is a possessor of forgiveness and a possessor of painful penalty. *2:136* Say, O believers, “We believe in *Allah* and what has been revealed to us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to *Allah* we all submit.”

okay... so you're basically telling me that my favourite writer ever happened to have found salvation the same way as Kierkegaard did. Kind of interesting.

Idk that it was “absurd”, his “obsession” with suicide was actually rather valid, he was living without God in his life. Its like Albert Camus said that a very valid question an honest atheist should ask himself is “why not just kill myself and put an end to the inevitable suffering of life which ends in death anyway” something to that affect at least.

And then you come to the conclusion after intense thought that you have to find a reason to live and to give life meaning. Following God is not the meaning to life for everyone. Finding a higher purpose is. Having a noble aim is fulfilling.

@@Samson484 you were the one against religion not me and studies find that suicide rates amongst religious groups is lower, meaning they do occur, probably not with the strongest of faith.

@@rerite-oy4xu never once did I ever say or imply that I was against religion. In fact, I see religion (specifically Christianity) to be a net positive for humanity. I said explicitly religion does not give life meaning for EVERYONE. It most certainly provides that higher purpose for some people.

Our actions are not prewitten. We have the free will to either walk the straight path or do evil works. A God that decides to create grape and prewrites the actions of grapists is an absolutely evil God. Satan has nothing on the best of deceivers...

Geez Louise; If Dr. Peterson described Tolstoy Ed incorrectly? embellished? romanticized? Diminished ? Why NO! His description, is simply the best read opinion in the room. If Russians’ head was there, He, The oligarch of former USSR ; is the fiercest man in the room. Leo may have felt same, as Peterson, of course!

whoever titled this video is wrong about it. And Peterson, well.. didn't explain much about the book but, he did quite a bit at it. As for this description, it is an absurd representation of Lev's book.

The fact is someone become true atheist after being the theist and the phase of life comes where the peoples alienated you (or you yourself, habitually mind forms itself because they once did in childhood ) and your mind loose all the trust for peoples from that extreme self suffering which lead you to not believe into god, also not only god, even self. To be a thiest, is matter of tranquility in you, it came first then the theist nature. Not firstly become a theist then comes calmness. It's just added the peace which was already in you. But the one who lost his peace is have to firstly find it in the outer world not in god after that automatically he/she become theist "again". When he can't able to do it, after a stage they do suicide after their faith, trust, love for self is completely destroyed. The structural of mind function works from this materialistic or social world until you become a true hermit. So don't blame those, who suicides and to the atheists

What an insensitive and disgusting thing to say. Atheism has no correlation with suicidal thoughts and tendencies; mental health conditions do.

@@nova8091 You have literally no evidence; anecdotes don’t count. Most studies indicate no or even a positive correlation between religious belief and suicidal tendencies [Wrathall, Jensen et. al.. 2018] [Rijksbaron et. al., 2020] [Lawrence et. al., 2016].
