Driver has suffered a hell of a lot in comparison to Grand Theft Auto. It just hasn't received the critical acclaim that it deserves. Admittedly, Driver 2 was released too close to GTA 3, Driv3r was outshone by GTA Vice City, and the latter Driver games were merely playing catch-up. But what you cannot escape is the awesome 70's movie feeling of the first Driver game. The game and soundtrack were way ahead of their time, and they helped to shape the modern Grand Theft Auto series and what game soundtracks are today. Driver was a driving force. I hope nobody forgets this.

+Jack Sheldon Your average gamer under the age of 20 probably hasn't even heard of the Driver series. I'm old enough to remember the PS1/N64 years and classics like the first two Driver games. Driver 2 came out a full year before GTA III - and on the PS1, it had critical acclaim and sold well, but the hardware of the PS1 simply wasn't capable of rendering a free roam game that well where you could drive around a city and get out of your car, walk around, get into other cars, etc. With about 15 years of hindsight it should've been a PS2 game, maybe a launch title, with gameplay more like DRIV3R.

+Claire J The second Driver game in my opinion should have been a PS2 game because It boarder lined on being barely working on the first PlayStation I mean the frame rates on the console was shit and the game itself felt like it was pushing the limits of the PlayStation in general. Overall though this was the game that got me even more interested into gaming than any other game prior to Driver 2 one of them being an elder scrolls game called dagger fall. To me If I had this game again I could play it any day of the week. It is the most underrated game in the most underrated series of games of all time in my opinion.

Unfortunately I don't think that will happen, since Ubisoft owns the IP and it seems they're mostly focused on Tom Clancy. Don't get me wrong I would love to see a remake of the trilogy but at least currently it doesn't seem like it will happen anytime soon. I could be wrong in the future but I'm hoping I'm wrong

Just completed my second playthrough. First was on PC and the second on PS1. Just reminded me how ridicolous the last mission is. Slippery controls, both police and gangsters can hit you with insane acceleration if you don´t dodge them.

Such a crazy awesome theme, childhood theme, ah how I would play this game as a kid, trying to flip cars on their sides. Hit the suspension, send them literally FLYING or hit the top of the car, I MYSELF goes flying! Ah I remember being able to cheat Survival by doing this trick, ramming the top of a car, flying myself up to a building... which really you weren't up there... lmao. Damn I'm so old now.

Cheeseburger Freedom Man play BeamNG if you want a game with similar physics. You can set up chases and stunts. Basically it's a driving physics sandbox with the most incredible damage model ever. Every bit of your car crumples in real time as you'd expect.

For some reason, I preferred the PC version of this game to the PS1 version. The graphics on the PC were superb, but there was also a driving mode called "carnage" where you could smash into as many vehicles as possible and cause damage for a limited amount of time. You could send cars into orbit too (if you struck them hard enough) lol.

It annoys me when the Driver series is compared to GTA, this first game never set out to be a GTA clone, and the ability to get out of the car and walk around/steal other cars etc just seemed like a natural progression from the first game rather than an attempt to emulate GTA. Agree wholeheartedly that they should have developed DII for the PS2. A missed opportunity almost. DII was just too ambitious to be a PS1 title.
