Saw him first during the Joe Cocker "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" tour. The impression that Leon made on stage, though he was a "sideman," is indelible. The show was at San Francisco's Winterland. Van Morrison, just after his "Moondance" LP, was second bill. I'm almost 73-years-old. That show was the greatest of the three best shows I ever saw. The Beatles (Chicago's International Amphitheater; August, 1966), because of their being idols of mine, and Bob Marley and the Wailers (Santa Barbara County Bowl; May, 1976) were the other two. Because of having seen these live shows, I consider myself very fortunate.

I first saw Leon in 1972 at the Boston Tea Party I was 20 years old it was the beginning of a life long enjoyment of following his music and lyrics I never really enjoyed piano in rock music until Leon opened my eyes and mostly my ears to it. I saw him some 40 years for the last time when he played in Foxborough Massachusetts at the Patriots stadium in a small venue I sat two booths from him and it was the closest I sat next to him and his piano he played for almost two hours of the most entertaining music I’ve ever heard and I’m 68 now and have seen my share of rock since the mid 60s I thank the music Gods for letting me grow up and live through Leon’s music career I’ll never forget you Leon I still listen to him on Vinyl and CD. He tickled the Ivory like no other from Rock to Love music. If you remember the Wedding Album a great Love Album, still tears me up to this day. Thank you my man for all the wonderful song you played and music you have written that so many never new you wrote to help other people become famous. And yes to who ever it was that made the comment that Elton Jon helped him finish his career where he deserved to be at the top. Rest In Peace music man. A forever fan Tom Soyden

This song by Danny O'Keefe came out in 1972 I just graduated from college in Omaha and stayed in town and got a job. Everyone I hung with also graduated....and left town. After a few months, I couldn't take it anymore, quit the job and took off hitchhiking and ended up on Cape Cod. This was pretty much my theme song and said it all for me at that time. Anyone know what Leon & Cocker's falling out was about after the falling out after the wild success of Mad Dogs & Englishmen?
@jukeboxgraduate3 жыл бұрын
As I recall, I saw someone from the tour interviewed- can't remember if it was one of the female back-up singers, or...nonetheless, to paraphrase: Leon eventually took over the entire "production" of the tour, and as Joe became more and more "ineffectual", and unable to assert his vision; his playlist; his drinking became prohibitively alarming! He was dooming his performances, and no one stepped in to "encourage" him/or Leon to augment things- for the sake of the Tour. The shows were so spectacular, I don't think most fans felt there was a big problem. That was Leon's greatness, however. He surely was a Master of Space and Time, and already a legendary icon -across so many musical genres, and with so many artists. It was no secret that he eventually took over, but in hindsight, many "critics' wrote of their shock that this would be a surprise to anyone - least of all to Joe's personal band. Joe will forever be remembered as a Rock 'n' Roll original. Sad for Joe that Leon was a seasoned steamroller, and unintentionally caused Joe to be underappreciated. I asked Leon to sign "Hummingbird" on my tee, and he was kind enough to comply. I am grateful I got to see him when Elton made a push to get him out on the road, again. What a gift ! May they ALL rest in PEACE!!
