My Dad (Ambrose Campbell) is playing conga wearing the light coloured wide brimmed hat, they played together for many years, right up to my dad's death in 2006. In 1996 I joined Dad,Jack (on bass) & Leon on a short tour around Tenn, they were a well oiled machine that played 3 gigs a night and every one was a classic show. if you check out Leon Russell on Later with Jools (1998) I'm standing behind Leon with my wife Helen looking very proud, Dad couldn't make the trip from Tenn as he was getting a little frail by then. Leon was a shy character when not on stage and called me saying "Danny I'm in the UK alone, would you and Helen be my guests on a live music show", I was honoured and proud as punch. Not many ppl in the UK knew Leon or his plethora of great work, so we were happy to ride shotgun with him, for me & my family he was Dad's best mate, to the world he was a mesmerising genius, extremely gentle and humble. He made a positive difference and the world is a little darker without his star providing a little light.

Amazing that a man who could have had every woman he ever met didn't use his over-the-top good looks for abusive reasons. He was truly a sexy, hot, decent, talented human being who NEVER chased the fame and fortune which could have been his in a heartbeat. He was just happy singing, playing and having fun and I love him all the more for it.
@paulaaubin49873 жыл бұрын
@Ariellyn... your so right about how he never to my knowledge ever chased any women. God knows he could've had groupies lining up on both the left and the right side of his damn hot sexy self. I know he has 2 daughters and a son so I've heard. I'm assuming it's a son in law as I've never seen him as an artist. Í truly don't think my heart could handle 2 sexy-ass men of Leon's status. I saw Leon's Gap Band tour in 1972 at Virginia Tech's Coliseum. He did that "Wait!" lick in "Ain't That Peculiar' like you see in this take. It remains the most memorable moment in a concert that I've seen. A powerhouse song like that coming to a full halt for no apparent reason -- just brilliant.
@PennyCilllin7 жыл бұрын
Ha! It's exactly that "Wait...!!" lick that's had me replay the song several times now, seeing if I can keep the 4/4 beat while everyone goes quiet. Most of the time I blow it by coming in too fast, but of course Leon absolutely nails it. What's amazing is his face reveals no evidence whatsoever that he's counting while it's quiet; not even a nano of an iota of a head-bob, whereas I look like I'm having a catastrophic mental attack whilst trying to keep that beat steady.

He actually had beautiful soul and showed it to other people with kindness and respect especially people who were the greats before him. Had some moderation as far as what he's saying and did and included his family and, other people. He will be missed as one of the greats Robert Plant is hard to watch it's all about Robert Plant. I was the guy that played the Stand Up Bass at one of the Leon Birthday Bashes, at The Brady Theater. I think it was around 2007. A bit of technical praise: Two full drum kits being played, but the studio mix is so perfect they never drown out anyone else. Such a mix takes skill, finesse and top-notch equipment, especially with everyone in such close quarters while both drum sets are mic'd from above. After Leon's recent passing, one of his band members said he'd been playing for Leon for a few years but Leon never said if he was doing a good job or if he even liked what the guy was doing. So, one day he asks Leon: "Hey Leon, it's been a long time and you've never said if I'm doing okay." Leon's reply was something along the lines of "Well, if you weren't, you'd know it."
@chlynn13b927 жыл бұрын

Same here. I kept thinking, is that THE Gap Band?? The 1980s funkiest of ALL the funkateers Gap Band??? But one look at the keyboardist's beautiful face shows that famous smile that I recognize. A quick Google to verify also reveals the Gap Band was a family band, all born and raised in Tulsa which I never knew until this very second despite myself being born and raised in Tulsa at the very same time. Even more hideously shameful on my part is that I'd never even heard of the Gap Band until I moved from Tulsa to Texas, by which time they'd already released three smash hit albums.

Okay, first, that story ROCKS. I would have blacked out at the mere sight of Leon that up-close and personal. Second, did this happen in the 1970s when the Mazeppa show was running on Saturday night late TV in Tulsa? I ask because that's when Gary Busey was a regular on the Mazeppa show and Leon was still living in town (he even guested on the show at least once). I was living in T-Town at the same time; born and raised there. Again, you are one lucky brave and lucky lady to have scored a kiss from Leon after chasing down his limo in Tulsa!!
@chlynn13b927 жыл бұрын
So envious you got to kiss him. Although not so much about Gary Busey, haha. I loved Leon and still do, but boy, his eyes, very sexy, you could get lost in them and the way he moved, played, and had this ultra cool demeanor all while rocking out with that southern, gospel thing he had going. I got turned on to him in 1970 right out of HS, saw him at the Mad Dogs and Englishmen concert, then three more times and will never forget him. So glad to see he got his due before he left us and will always be grateful to Elton for bringing him back for the world to see, not that he ever left many of us. He was one of my very favorites. May he RIP.

Saw Leon in Greensboro NC in '71 when I was in college and the girl I carried with me was up on my shoulders right down front and Leon would look out over the audience and would point from time to time at different people. Well as I said I had my gf up on my shoulders and we were right down front, right in front of Leon's piano and in the middle of a song he pointed and looked right at my gf and she fell backwards right off my shoulders into the crowd, lol. He had that affect on women, don't ya know. I miss those old festival shows with the Rev. Patrick Henderson and the gang where he would climb up on his piano and play the guitar and he would stop from time to time and talk to the crowd and talk about the power of music and the power of love, it really was a thing of beauty from a beautiful man that knew what he was talking about! The power of music and the power of love, music speaks where words fail, the inarticulate speech of the heart, if you will. Of course I still go to every concert he puts on to this day as long as it is relatively local.

A mi particularmente León me traía loca en aquella época y todavía siento una gran atracción por el es único su personalidad fue lo que mas me impresionaba, sereno muy seguro de si mismo y de su gran talento.
