Andy, that looked brutal. I could hear that one in your stride/steps. You're a freakin' machine to push through that. Have you thought about going with a light colored, full brim hat like the Sunday Afternoons "Compass" hat? I know it's not the ultra-runner look, but it keeps the sun completely off your face, ears, back of your head, and neck. I don't do ultras, but I'm out on the trails here in SoCal for 2-3hrs at a time, and it's been my tool of choice since 2015...same hat even. The rattlers are scary af (to me)!! I had one strike at me in the Grand Canyon, near Phantom Ranch, in Aug. '23. The buzzing of the Cicada's in the trees along the trail, about 200m before Phantom (coming from the North Rim) were hiding the sound of it's rattle, and it was behind a blind, left hand kink in the trail. At the last second, at the left edge of the trail, I saw movement, and realized it was a pink and gray rattler racking itself into a tight Z shape. I screamed and jumped right like a cat, and the last thing I saw was that open white mouth, flying toward my left thigh. It missed, I didn't miss a stride, and just kept on running. About 2 seconds later the full gravity of the situation hit me, and lasted the rest of the R2R. What's worse is that normally my daughter runs these with me, and she always leads. I'm sure she would have been bit.
