This girl was everything I liked. She didn't put on an act like most do, she gained strength throughout her journey on this show. Her voice was effortless and, it was her own which is more than can be said for some on this show. Everything about this performance just sends shivers down your spine.

A big part of the magic of this performance is that it was for her cousin that passed away. And, of course Eva Cassidy's rendition of the song helped a lot too but Leona is really good.

@stevenr4697
@stevenr4697 10 жыл бұрын
I agree that Bleeding Love was Sam's weakest performance but I think just the impact she has through singing paired with the stage direction and showmanship she surpassed Lewis. This may just be due to the budget increase from 2006 to 2013. I just think that Sam can do sooooo much more technically than Lewis as she can do a few high notes which do sound angelic but Sam will have a lot more diverse sounding songs in the years to come compared to Lewis' recent songs. I must admit though I get shivers when I listen to Leona Lewis' My Hands song... you like that one? :)

Sam Bailey is a great singer, I think she, Alexandra, Shayne and Matt are the best winners after Leona. Sam is an incredible vocalist and such a great belter, she's had some wow performances like power of love, the thing is that Leona signs with elegance and silky smooth, she has maybe 20 performances that wow you.

It's so unbelievable the confidence that some people have to insult a performance online. She did a great job
@thevoiceofsense8875
@thevoiceofsense8875 9 жыл бұрын
+A Dube --- And there is the irony of the talent show. On the one hand it uncovers hidden gems like Leona Lewis. But, unfortunately, it also encourages people to be an armchair critic - even when criticism isn't needed, like on a performance as good as this from a clearly talented singer. If she sang out of tune or her tone was grating to the ear, etc, then fair enough, it would deserve some criticism for a poor performance. But to, as you say, insult a good performance from a supremely talented singer with the most beautiful voice, just because they don't like the style in which she's singing it, just shows that some people don't give a rat's ass about making the world a more negative place. If I don't like a particular performance of an artist I try and leave constructive criticism, or I just go and find something I do like - after all no one has forced these people to listen to it in the first place!
@never_pharma1412
@never_pharma1412 8 жыл бұрын
+A Dube Actually what IS believable is that there are people in this world that want to try and drag other people down, or kick them when they're down, because down is all they know. I wouldn't say they have 'confidence' though. Confidence is a good feeling about yourself. They just have bad feeling about everyone else! Let's face it, nothings wrong with expressing what you feel about something - that's what we're here for. But KZbin has no checks or balances, so while most comments are worth reading (likes and dislikes) there will always be the immature, the half-wits and the haters to fuck things up!

Yeah, it was based on Cassidy's version, which I've listened to, but this is a whole different ball game. There's no word soft and beautiful enough to describe that tone, and the control of her vibrato is unreal. Then there's the emotion, like WTF, those power notes would've turned Mike Tyson into a blubbering wreck. OK, for all you haters Judy sung this superbly as a lullaby, can't fault her there. Eva Cassidy took the lullaby and turned it into a song with expression for people with more sophisticated musical taste. As a tribute, Leona took Eva's version and poured a ton of sentiment into it so that you could feel the emotion in the performance For me, music is all about making you feel emotion, and *this is just a beautiful performance that rips your heart out*. What more could you want. If you can't connect with it and feel the emotion, then I guess that's just the way you take stuff in, as we're all different. However, *if you were expecting to hear a lullaby, and were disappointed, that's easily fixed - just go and watch the Wizard of Oz.*

+jubile2015 Leona's version is a similar interpretation in terms of the counterpoint off of the melody, but she makes the version her own with subtle but important differences and with the style in which it is sung. Eva's version was laid back and sung more like a folk song. Leona's version was full on dramatic and sung with pure emotion (because of the dedication to her cousin). And she definitely DIDN'T sing exactly the same notes. Do your research and check properly !!!! And as for her voice being forced at the end - there may be a very small element of truth in what you say. She was hitting the big power note ending, and she was still learning her craft here on X-factor (her voice is anything but forced nowadays) .So it may not have been perfect, but it was still dam good. What does make it magical though is her ability to add huge contrast in dynamic range especially in the middle part of the song, when she starts to wind up one power note after another. That was just sublime because you rarely get to see anyone able to do that, and definitely not with such a beautiful tone.

+jubile2015 OK let's see if you can put your money where your mouth is. Go and post your own video with both versions mixed on top of each other, so that we can hear. If they are then exactly the same note for note I'll give you $1,000 if not you can give me the cash instead. Somehow, I don't think you will, BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT, AND IN MY BOOK THAT MAKES THEM SIMILAR! Anyway, you're missing the point. The style in which they are sung is different. Leona's version is much more emotional and dramatic, and that's why only Sharon Osbourne (not all the judges) said "you took it and Leonafied it, and you owned it", because Leona is the known for superbly conveying emotion in a song, and her performance was outstanding, which is why she owned it. Your next comment is just ridiculous. HOW IN THE HELL COULD YOU POSSIBLY KNOW WHAT LEONA WAS THINKING? If you knew anything about her you would know that wouldn't even enter her head, because that's not the sort of person she is. In any case, It's not written anywhere that the contestants must say who's version they've based their interpretation on - SO YOUR COMMENT ISN'T EVEN RELEVANT! Now, let me just put the record straight for you. Avicci didn't create the original melody of 'Fade into darkness', that runs right through the song, he COPIED it from 'Perpetuum Mobile' by Penguin Cafe Orchestra. SO AVICII'S SONG IS A COPY (a totally different arrangement, production, and genre, but still a COPY) Also, he was bitching about Leona's record label not crediting him on her single, so in the end they agreed to put the credit on the track. BUT HE DIDN'T EVEN CREDIT HIS OWN VOCALIST Andreas Moe, so he was guilty for what he was accusing Leona of doing. As for your plagiarism statement, what you don't seem to get is that most artists copy at some point (if their career is long enough) because they respect the original version and like to re-interpret it in their own style (after all even they are influenced by their favorite music). Leona covered 'Homeless', which was originally recorded by Darin, and I'm glad she did, because her version, especially when she sings it live, is one of the best ballads I've ever heard. Darin covered 'Viva la Vida' by Coldplay. Coldplay were accused of plagiarism of a song ironically titled 'The songs I didn't write', by Creaky Boards for the melody of 'Viva la Vida'. DO YOU GET IT YET, music is not just creation, it's also interpretation, IT GOES ON ALL THE TIME! Leona also covered Snow Patrol's 'Run', but her interpretation was completely different, and way more successful, earning Snow Patrol a nice chunk of cash in royalties, and enabling them to successfully re-release their version. According to Music Radar, Gary Lightbody, the lead singer from Snow Patrol said about Leona's version "That's what you want a song to do. Different interpretations and meanings. Songs aren't monolithic, at least the good ones aren't WHAT LEONA HAS DONE HAS TOUCHED HEARTS". And that's exactly what she did with the song on this post - even if you don't like it! But let's get back to your statement. So far, Leona has released 22 songs from her Albums, only 5 of which were covers. So MOST of what people have heard from her is ORIGINAL. Out of what they haven't heard, from her Studio Albums, 'Spirit', 'Echo', 'Glassheart', and 'I am' only 11 tracks out of 64 were covers (you can't include her Christmas Album, which is supposed to have cover versions on it) SO YOU DO THE MATH! And last of all, she quit her record company (because they wanted her to do an Album of cover versions) so that she can do an Album of completely original material. that is ANYTHING BUT a career full of Plagiarism. At last, we come to statement that's correct. Many singers called Diva's can hit a power note and hold it, but hardly any can do it without straining their voice and sounding pitchy. If you listen to the middle of the song on this post you can hear Leona do it perfectly. But don't forget this was X-Factor, in her younger days, when she was still perfecting her skills, so the last note may not have been perfect (but was still good). For a good example of what she can do as an established artist you need to go and listen to songs she has released and performed live (because any one can be made to sound good in a recording studio). A good example is her Labyrinth tour, and you will hear the best artist that can hold a power note without losing her beautiful tone. Finally, an original recording is DEFINITELY NOT always better than a copy. There are bucket loads of examples to prove you are wrong, but here are just a few: 'Nothing compares 2 U' by Sinead O'Connor, 'It's my life', by No Doubt, "Whatta man', by Salt 'n Pepa, 'Torn', by Natalie Imbruglia, 'It's Oh so quiet', by Byork, 'Killing me softly', by Roberta Flack, then there's 2 songs that Leona sang on the X-Factor, 'The first cut is the deepest', by Rod Stewart, and 'I will always love you', by Whitney Houston, and even the Queen of Soul - Arethra Franklin covered 'Respect, and the Legendary Stevie Wonder covered 'Superstition' one of the tracks that made him famous. Seriously, you need to do your research instead of letting your emotions, and hatred for Leona cloud your reasoning !!!!

+jubile2015 OK I was trying to keep this sensible instead of just turning it into a slanging match but clearly you've got no valid arguments, you've just come here for a confrontation, so fair enough. First, let me ask you, do you actually understand English ??? I guess I'll have to break it down for you so that you're single brain cell can understand what I'm saying. I actually meant go and post your own video of Leona Lewis singing and Eva Cassidy singing, mixed together, so that we can hear note for note if they are the same, but i guess the phrase "with both versions" required one brain cell too many (seriously, who the hell would want to hear you singing anyway !!). But if you can't do that (and at this point I seriously doubt if you can do much of anything) then show me where (on what post) they are singing the same note for note. As I said, you won't be able to because not only are you talking complete crap, you struggle to string a proper sentence together. And WTF has honesty got to do with it? So what if Katie Melua said it, Leona was grieving for her cousin who died, ARE YOU SO INCOMPETENT AND HEARTLESS THAT YOU COULDN'T SEE THAT? And again, IF SHE SINGS EXACTLY THE SAME NOTES, SHOW ME WHERE OR STFU? If Leona is a has-been and is forgotten, then WHAT THE F*&k ARE YOU DOING HERE. Not that I don't think Eva Cassidy is a great artist and was really talented, but I didn't even know who she was till I came on this post and saw all the haters. And I think you'll find that Leona is way more famous than Eva will ever be !!!! Last of all you didn't even read a word I wrote did you, because you would've seen how stupid you look with the imitator accusations, when I clearly proved that you're wrong. It's a real shame that half-wit's like you can find nothing better to do with their time then go around spreading their hatred and trying to annoy people that genuinely appreciate talent. But there's the thing......you're trying but your complete crap at that as well, because all of you've done is show how poorly you understand English, how well you dodge questions you can't answer, and how easy it is to make you look like the f*&k-wit you are !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+jubile2015 Well....finally....you ARE right about one thing. We don't speak the same language, literally or metaphorically......jeeze, you don't even know how to argue. Let's face it, your opinions are about as relevant as a parachute in a submarine, as interesting as a documentary on dirt, and as factual as Frosty the fast-talking snowman! Grown-ups normally dispute a point that was made, if they don't agree with it. But you're like a little kid running around with their fingers in their ears, so that they can't hear what they don't want to. I proved that your full-of-shit, and that Leona's ORIGINATED more quality music than I bet you've ever listened to. I gave you probably the longest, most detailed comment in the history of long detailed comments, but all I keep getting from you in reply is "imitation....imitation". So, here's a radical thought,....why don't you pull your fucking fingers out of your ears, and go and listen to some of her music, so you can see how stupid your answers are. Then try and tell Clive Davis (assuming you even know who that is), or Oprah (ditto), or the many top artists that acknowledge her talent, or the tens of millions of other people that bought her music, that she's a nobody, and see how far you get! Seriously, how can you even know what quality music is with your... "the best thing she's done was her copy of Avicci"... bullshit. His record was crap anyway, the Cahill remix of Collide was waaaaay superior, without that irritating piano riff in it. I normally enjoy putting across a difference of opinion,.....hell I even get a kick out of trading a few put-downs, but I can't have a battle of wits with a half-wit....where's the fun in that! So, I suggest you go back to your cave and wait for evolution to donate you another brain cell, so you can figure out how to change hands when you wet your whistle over a poster of Avicci..... because with an attitude like yours, I figure whistle wetting is as good as it'll get for ya!!!!!

+Leo nitus Eva Cassidy's version was the inspiration, so the lead melody is similar. But, you can't say a folk song, casually sang with a guitar is the same rendition as a dramatically delivered performance with huge dynamic range, an orchestra, bucket loads of emotion, and an awesome performance. So she DID make it her own.

design321 Well that's just a dumb comment! Do you really think the 2 versions sound the same, or that Leona's version sounds like anyone else's? How about the slow build from chimney tops to that explosion of power, beautiful tone, and pure emotion in "somewhere" (for me the most iconic, showstopping note I've ever heard sung - period). Do you really think that has been done before ????

I guess that's what makes everybody unique. Different strokes for different folks. I personally prefer Eva's performance a lot more. Leona's sounds more like a contestant trying to showcase her vocal range and power, whereas Eva's was more of an artist expressing her art and connecting with the listeners in a small club. They're both appropriate for the settings they were sung in, I guess.

shiroikiba Maybe, but she adds something that is even more beautiful, by singing off the original melody but not too far off so you know where it still is, and taking it to where you can inject raw emotion into it. Bottom line, she changes up an old sounding melody into a modern masterpiece.
