What's with those portion sizes of the wine? I've been to a lot of restaurants and I've never seen such generous pours. Most places use the standard 5 oz pour with the largest at 9oz. Those glasses have to to be at least 12 oz of wine, and it looks like everyone in the restaurant was served that amount. I"m also a bit surprised they received the wine that quickly. They haven't even ordered yet.

Well sure but: 1. There's not much humor in that. 2. In real life, all kind of people end up together that, on the surface at least, should not. 3. But nerds ending up with very attractive women isn't that uncommon, really. Money and stability, which most nerds have, and all the nerds on this show do, is a powerful aphrodisiac once you graduate from high school. I have an uncle whose story was a lot like Leonard's. He waited on this special, very pretty girl all through college. They dated off and on, she moved on several times. He waited her out. They were married at least 50 years and, like Leonard and many nerds in real life, he made an income to die for, was essentially never laid off. They had a hellofva life and she certainly never looked back.

Men who want to get married these days, and most of us marry late, are going to have to accept that the woman they choose has a history. The number of 27 year old virgins is vanishingly small. And yes, a lot of people _do_ settle. It's just the way the world works. Women who wait until 35 or later to marry discover that they struggle to have kids if they have any at all. The rest know better and pop out a kid or two in their early 30s if they want one. That imperative does, in fact, have women settling, as (in Pride and Prejudice for instance) Charlotte Lucas does. At 27. I reject your underlying premise in the BBT that Penny was "settling". It is certainly true that Penny tried on several men for size. But she always knew that Leonard was going to want marriage. It was the cited factor behind their first and biggest breakup. More than once, in fact. Penny wasn't "settling" with Leonard. She was getting over her own hang ups with the idea of settling down at all. With anyone. On their very first date, about Schrodinger's Cat, she found out "the cat was alive" when she kissed him. She even admitted later on that breaking up was a mistake. That's not settling -- there was always something there -- it was the backbone of the whole show, in fact. No matter who they were momentarily dating.

She is mostly the dominant one in the relationship, but not always, particularly when she discovers that plenty of other women, such as Priya, find him attractive. Alex was viewed as a real threat as well; though it never went anywhere, that was because Penny (and Amy) took steps to see to it. She didn't just dismiss her out of hand. She also, in later years, actually gets turned on when Leonard stops compromising quite so much. I would say she is of two minds about it. Most days, she's dominant, but it doesn't take much to turn the tables, actually. Also, despite the bravado you cite (which is a real dynamic in the series -- you're not wrong about that) it is _also_ very clear from very early on that her fear of commitment is a major driver for her and any man. She broke up with Leonard precisely because she knew that he was in it for the long haul, particularly marriage. She never actually dated a real "alpha" in that regard, now, did she? If she had, she'd have married that guy. But she never even dated one -- just players, alphas or not. She didn't want to _marry_ any of them. They really weren't her type. It's twelve seasons. A lot goes on in even a fictional relationship of such a duration.

To me, having seen it in real life, it’s sort of fascinating. A friend of mine was *crazy* about his female roommate. She was smart, pretty, great personality. She gave him the “I don’t want to ruin our friendship” speech. Because they shared a wall, the poor guy listened as she brought home over 50 guys in the year they lived together, and even she didn’t have a guy would crawl into his bed “just to cuddle.” Sleeping with him was a flat no. It was like her only criteria was “not Mike.” So strange.
