Lyrics:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing "Hallelujah"
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

So many people like the covers better, and don't get me wrong, the covers are beautiful, but for some reason, I just feel this song more when I'm listening to the original. Cohen's voice... it just fits the raw emotion to this song. It's not dressed up, it's not over-dramatic, its real. I can't describe it any other way. It's just so beautiful, really.

The chorus in this version was not made of professional singers, to make it sound more like people singing along, and not a polished choir. It was made of the band members, the producer, the producer's ex-wife, and a few others. It fits this version perfectly, I think.

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human. It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence. "Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability. The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith. The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human.

Cohen often said that songwriting is a difficult process for him. The only song The Future, he said, has been rewritten dozens of times. In an interview, Cohen told the following story: A few years ago, Bob Dylan and I drank coffee in Paris. At that time, he performed the song Hallelujah at his concerts and asked me how long it took to write it. I said: "Two years, almost entirely." He was shocked. Then we started talking about his song I And I and I asked: “How much time did you spend writing it?” He said: “Almost 15 minutes”. I almost fell off the chair. And the funny thing is that I lied. In fact, the Hallelujah took almost 5 years. Of course, and he lied. It probably took him about ten minutes.

Back when I was in high-school I was part of the school-choir. I was one of three guys in a choir consisting at times of up to 40 girls. For one event we prepared Hallelujah and somehow I was chosen to sing the last verse. For rehearsals we always had a 'female-version' and I only knew the version from, if I'm not mistaken, Jeff Buckley. The concert came, the girls beautifully sang their solos and I too hummed/growled my verse. We left the stage, as I saw an elderly man who followed me with his shining eyes, we passed the rows of chairs and he slightly lifted his arm as if to reach for my hands. I stopped and he simply put his hands around mine and thanked me. I was so shocked that I did not reply anything. I compared myself to the angelic voices of the girls and could not comprehend how/why he was so moved by my part. Is was accosted multiple times that evening, mostly by elderly people; so I mentioned it to my parents. And my mom told me that it might be because I kinda sound like Leonard Cohen when I sing. I looked his version up when I we got home and yeah... I surely don't want to compare me with Leonard Cohen... laughable :D but whenever I hear this version; especially the last verse, I think of that old man's shining eyes and am quietly so very proud that my voice could re-ignite a very old and deep emotion in that man; whatever it was...

Dang, this original version is not just some love song like all the covers, but a comment on how vain life feels. No matter what you do, life feels like it's full of mistakes and pitfalls. Your actions can be of the purest of meaning, but things just don't always pan out as you wish. We can all hope that things are better at the end. We can only say Hallelujah.

Yes, I had to search for the original version who wrote it who first recorded it and the lyrics I don’t understand how the lyrics got changed throughout the years with people covering this song and making it not pure anymore. I was so confused when I heard this for the first time I didn’t know if it was supposed to be Like a love song pertaining to intimacy but now I’ve heard the original version. I think all covers of any song should be done with original lyrics of a song. This song is amazing.

I like it better too Geoff. He is the original. He is the poet, the writer, the man with the passion to have came up with the song. the other version is actauly quite good but this man was the man. He also wrote at least a dozen other songs that most people have no idea that he wrote, one example. so long mary anne. this is special to my family. My father began to listen to Leoanard cohen around 2004 or 2005 when he was around 60, he sadly passed away only 4 years later in 2009 suddenly at the age of 64 and a half of cardiac arrest. one of our good family friends in florida who's son got marred late that year, well the couple actually chose them to play this very song (well on the church piano/organ since all songs were played on it) but they did this specially for my mom because my dad loved loenard cohen. and than he came to Detroit as well a year later, and I took my mom to see him live in honor of our father.

@@psychedeliac Its a very Jewish song. Defining that as “religious” or not depends on a distinction that does not exist in Judaism. To me this is about experiencing God’s presence, shekinah, in the act of sex, which is a theme that goes back to Solomon and the Song of Songs, and offering praise to the Sovereign of the Universe for that experience of love and joy even when it comes with pain.

@@blackadamrockzzz4439 Nope, Leonard Cohen was one of ours! As the last name would suggest - "Cohen" comes from the Hebrew word for priest, "Kohen," used to refer to the Priests of the First and Second Temples from the Tribe of Levi. I can almost guarantee any Christians you meet with that last name at least have Jewish ancestry.

@Costa Zambaras Or, you know, some people just prefer the original over the cover because it's perfectly fine to have opinions and you don't have to gate keep just because you're self conscious about your own taste. If you like the Buckley version better, good on you, it's very good. I like it too, but I prefer the original for just as legitimate reasons. That doesn't make me or anyone else with that opinion "edgy" or "non conformist"

It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing "Hallelujah" *[Chorus]* Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah *[Verse 2]* Your faith was strong, but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah *[Chorus]* Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah *[Verse 3]* You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well, really, what's it to ya? There's a blaze of light in every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah *[Chorus]* Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah *[Verse 4]* I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the lord of song With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah *[Chorus]* Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah *[Outro]* Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Those of us who grew up in the 1960's thought the song Leonard Cohen would be remembered for would be "Suzanne," not this one which he didn't write until the 1980's. But this is the Cohen masterpiece. and as good as some of the covers are (particularly Jeff Buckley's and k. d. lang's), Cohen is the winner and still champion on this song.

I think some other versions do justice enough, but I feel like the point is missed when gorgeous people with beautiful voices blast it out of the water, flexing their chops, making a grand and spectacular show of it. The song isn’t itself unless it’s broken, and that’s what makes it so tragic. There’s something so beautiful about it, and it’s trying its damned best to bring it out. But if it’s ever achieved, the song is lost.

@The Nuka Cola Man That's your opinion, sure you can share it, but there is a huge difference in the number of views in Jeff's favour, so I guess 150 million more people agree with me on this one.

This song brings memories of my ex-wife, I endured years of her dual diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and bipolar-1 combined with alcoholism. This song touches all the points of the mental fight within my heart and head before I called it quits. I cry unconsolably every time I hear it. All my efforts to get her help were met with reversed blame, to the point of having to end the relationship with the only one who could understand me. I'm left to be alone until I die. Thanks for reading.

Sometimes we are experiencing living difficult circumstances. It is a fact that evev the Creator of the univers has t be able to enjoy a sharing, a good relation, in return of His investing of Love in every cm3 of the cosmos. HE IS WAITING (ACTIVELY BUSY) FOR THE MATURITY OF Humankind, as the nature (its said in the Bible) is yearning for true masters... Let we awoke that all our efforts to give, to live joyfully, respectingoursrlf and others, will uplift Even the brokenheart of God himself.! His ideal is in our hands as humans are responsible of the fall..... Let's be sensitive to His love and Presence. And let's return our Precious Love to Him so He can relax and feel Joy.!

Another beautiful song set. I'm grateful. Thank you. Lord of Heaven, I'm weary, everything’s not alright, my head is done in, my heart is hurting, I can’t trust my intuition anymore, I've resolved things are not what it seems. Thanks for your goodness towards me Lord. I'm blessed regardless...I will keep singing, praising and praying. Your mercy endures foreve

As another Atheist (named Alex) Cohen talked about the song as his "desire to affirm [his] faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm and emotion" Faith in a God or Gods is not a prerequisite for having some kind of faith, and religious or not I think Leonard sings from the heart about a broad love and devotion towards existence itself, and as an Atheist who believes this existence, both holy and broken in its own way, is all we have. I kno0w this reply is at least a year late but I hope you have a great day, maybe now accompanied by some Cohen.

I know and admire Leonard Cohen but am onto this song because of playing his entire Various Positions album which came across in a Facebook post today (12/12/2020) about the deep and long friendship and respect between Bob Dylan and Mr. Cohen. When released it did not create even a ripple - that is until Dylan told the world how great this album and Leonard were. Then it was discovered along with this particular song - the rest is the history. After his death, Dylan played this song as a tribute. two Jewish kids growing up at the same time - their paths crossed often - they talked, laughed and so admired each other - to Dylan, Leonard was a poet, one of our best in recent years.

My understanding is that Mr. Cohen was not a believer in Jesus so he will not be in heaven and will definitely not be in "Heaven's Choir".

Laurie Logan Harsh, Leonard Cohen would most likely end up in Purgatory and eventually heaven (and that's if he doesn't believe in jesus)
