One of the greatest endings to a live song I’ve ever heard, I don’t really know why but him shouting out the band members while the audience erupts into cheers as the band keeps playing is absolutely brilliant

People (and Cohen himself lmao) shit on Death of a Ladies Man, but honestly I fucking love that album Especially Memories, Iodine and Paper Thin Hotel

Agree, Cohen should have known Phil Spector had more egothann him, but later, he made this song ans others on that album his own. He had a pretty hood sense of humor.
Too UN-Leonard for me. Background vocalists too prominent and jazzy. None of the gravelly voice that became his signature. I don't even recall this song from his early repertoire. (Yes. I was there back then. In Montréal, Québec.)

Death of A Ladies Man is a pretty important transition point between New Skin For the Old Ceremony and Various Positions (along with Recent Songs, which was sort of a nessisary regression from which Various Positions could progress). A critical development between periods of his music.

@InnsannaStories Oh. Thank you for the information. I'm not sure that I agree that any of the developments were "necessary,", but that's okay.

@@ethicscannie5716 Theres no way you get to the heavy synths of I'm Your Man without the break from acoustics IMO

@InnsannaStories I wonder whether he was aware of all this and doing it purposively ... or if it will have to remain posthumous conjecture? I also wonder whether I have the chronology wrong. But I do know that I don't like the music from this Era, and I long fir his gravely voice, not the voice on this recording. Doesn't matter: no one is forcing me to listen to it. It was just a shock, being such a very far distance from the Leonard of the 60s.
