LYRICS:
I can make the hills
The system is shot
I'm living on pills
For which I thank G-d
My animal howls
My angel’s upset
But I'm not allowed
A trace of regret
For someone will use
The thing I could not be
My heart will be hurt impersonally
She’ll step on the path
She’ll see what I mean
My will cut in half
And freedom between
For less than a second
Our lives will collide
The endless suspended
The door open wide
And she will be born
To someone like you
What I left undone
She will certainly do
I know she is coming
And I know she will look
And that is the longing
And this is the hook
I can’t make the hills
The system is shot
I'm living on pills
For which I thank G-d
My page was too white
My ink was too thin
The day wouldn’t write
What the night penciled in
But I know she is coming
And I know she will look
And that is the longing
And this is the hook
(I know she is coming)
And I know she will look
(that is the longing)
And this is the hook
I can make the hills
The system is shot
I'm living on pills
For which I thank G-d
I sailed like a swan
I sank like a rock
But time is long gone
Past my laughingstock
And I can make the hills
The system is shot
I'm living on pills
For which I thank G-d

When you're depressed..put on some Cohen. He'll assure you, he'll walk with you. And, you'll make it through. That's what Cohen does. Still does. The Master lives.

One of my regrets never seeing in concert. I got into Leonard Cohen late. My brother gifted my mother one of his later CD's and all the years of not wanting to hear Cohen disappeared and suddenly I listened and became a fan. Ironically both my brother and mother have passed on and that one album means more to me now. It was my doorway with an open mind and ive been collecting ever since.

Here I go again.....I still can't listen to The Master without crying... Especially now the world is falling apart, we need his wisdom, his Beauty, his Poetry, his Voice, his Comfort. Mister Cohen understood all our feelings and he wasn't afraid to speak the truth about politics, humanrelations, etc. And now, he is still speaking to us, he's still here for us.. But the pain of him being gone, when will that go away? Maybe I'm just crazy.... But This was such a special Gentleman... And we are "The Broken Hearted many, the Open Hearted few..." Thanks for the songs, Mr.Cohen, thanks for a way of living.... About the clip: it's perfect, it's in the style of the master, thank you makers..... Blessed Be and be safe everyone...; Althea )0(

One particular detail I noted about this song’s music video is that despite the man’s depressed/somber look on his face, he continues walking towards his goal (“the hills”) anyway, even when it looks impossible for him. That is pure meaningful right there.

Even the studied professors argue about the lyrics but they all forgot 1 thing: it's the life from Mr Cohen, only he knows... and we know if we close our eyes and listen to our souls... This song touches me so deeply. My dad passed away last July and we didn't say goodbye, but this song sounds like something he'd leave me behind with. "What I left undone, she will certainly do." It's such a powerful line and gives me a feeling of strength and hope. It is so masterfully done, it sounds like a dance between life and death, joy and grief, hope and despair. But ends perfectly combining the two. I am in awe! Rest in peace Leonard, I bet you and my dad are great friends up there.

@@praveensanap You are correct that Leonard Cohen had both a book and a poem called the "Book of Longing" (not Loging incidentally) that started off with the lyrics to this song. However, the song deviates from the poem quickly and the poem goes on for much longer. Unless you were going for a meta-reference (in which case I would applaud you), the lyrics to the song say "hook." Also, the poem does not end like you say; maybe tangentially at best: "as I have found mine where I´d never look: in the threaded spine of my Longing Book". Regardless, pedantry aside, thank you for being a Leonard Cohen fan and caring enough to comment on his song. Any Leonard Cohen fan is a friend of mine.
