it was 1972 and i was 14 years old. i convinced my grandmother to let me ride a greyhound from Atascadero to Anaheim to spend 4 days with my girlfriend. i still cannot believe that she allowed it. Her mother let us sleep together and we slept under a single sheet in the heat of summer. naked and chaste, barely touching in the oppressive heat. i did not sleep a moment. just lay there and felt her presence. i don't believe she slept either. the next evening a friend of hers picked us up to go cruise. he was driving a 65 mustang with the obligatory hijackers, thrush mufflers and mags. we sat in the back seat, holding hands while we passed a joint and the car filled with smoke. i remember looking out the right side of the car as the wall around Disneyland passed by. Her friend slid a cassette tape into the tape deck and "Diamonds in the Mine" began playing from partway through the opening verse. i was mesmerized. he seemed to be singing right from my secret place, vocalizing emotions that i was, up till then, unable to voice. then i heard the song that has haunted me all of my life, "Famous Blue Raincoat" i can still smell the pot and exhaust and feel the heat of the summer and the rumble of the engine and i can remember the feel of her small hand in mine.. i do not remember her name and i cannot, for all of my trying, see her face but i remember those four days in the summer of 1972. it all comes rushing back every time i hear that song. i went back to grandmothers and then rode the bus back to San Diego and went right to the record store and ordered his album on vinyl. i played it 10,000 times if i played it once and waited for every album after that to come out. Leonard said that Famous Blue Raincoat was the one song that he felt was never finished, a story with missing parts, a mystery about regret and resignation and about forgiveness, forgiveness finally extended much too late for that unfortunate triangle of lovers. I still listen to it, waiting to hear the next layer of meaning. my life is certainly a story with missing parts and maybe all of us have a few missing parts... and more than a few layers of meaning waiting to be heard . i have listened to his music my entire life, i am always amazed at how powerful his lyrics are, how he was able to place a few simple words into a perfect sequence that could evoke such emotion and such depth of meaning. i still, to this day, will hear a lyric that i have heard 5,000 times and suddenly a deeper meaning becomes so apparent that i cannot believe it took so many years to peel back the layers to discover it. i sometimes think that he wrote songs that i would need decades later in my life. A great poet a fierce critic of hatred and suffering, a man who battled against the wrong in the world and never lost his belief in the goodness of humanity. He was never afraid to to stand up and shake his fist into the face of the creator, demanding an explanation for the suffering and evil he allowed in the world. He could write poetry that was at once both sensual and spiritual and leave you knowing they were one in the same. it sounds funny but i will not miss him; he has been a friend, a guide and a teacher. he will remain so, always at arms reach. I am sad that i will not see him again. i am grateful that i saw him in Red Rocks in 09 and i regret that i did not buy that ticket to Dublin. ...I choose the rooms that i live in with care the windows are small and the walls are bare there is only one bed, there is only one prayer and i wait every night for your step on the stair... enjoy the next adventure Leonard, demand that our deities be accountable for what they have done and what they have not. ...and i know from your eyes and i know from your smile that tonight will be fine, will be fine, will be fine, will be fine... for awhile

I was honoured (as I now know) to attend one of Leonard's 3 concerts in Dublin at the Royal Kilmainham Hospital in 2012. My wife booked it after we had both enjoyed his later albums. I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to it (I am VERY lazy ). But, oh my God, was I ever so grateful. We attended on the first night, a Friday, and it was dry weather (the next two nights were not, but I don't think people cared). The whole performance was mesmeric. The sound quality was exceptional (bravo sound engineers). Women danced together in the aisles. There was an aura of what can only be described as group ecstasy. I remember for going for a pee later and talking to the macho guys around me, and everybody was on a complete high. A natural, high. Dare I say, as a non-believer, an almost spiritual high. I read later that Leonard said some time after the concert that he and his group were deeply moved by the reception. At one point he turned around and that the superb Spanish guitarist was crying, such was the warmth and love projecting from the audience. My best concert experience ever, by a mile (ok, as a lazy person, not HUGE competition.....Van Morrison in the 90s in London was pretty good though).

Leonard Cohen is simply a virtuoso, and he has collected around him stunning musicians and singers. This particular version of Who by Fire is a full poetic rendering and the beginning guitar solo quite out of this planet. Bravo to all of them.

If after listening to Señor Mass his solo you can still deny the 'Moors' better known as the Arabian conquerers of Spain and Portugal or El Andalus have left their mark on Spanish culture you must be out of your mind, willfully ignorant or just stupid. You can hear the Arabian sounds coming from the guitar and it's beautifull. He's a true master of the Spanish guitar!

How many shall pass, and how many created: Who shall live and who shall die; Who in their time and who not in their time; Who by water And who by fire; Who by the sword And who by a beast; Who by hunger And who by thirst; Who by disaster And who by sickness; Who by strangling And who by stoning; Who will rest And who will wander; Who will be go peacefully And who will go violently; Who will be calm And who will be harried; Who will be poor And who will be rich; Who will be degraded And who will be exalted.

Somtimes we die a little every day by assaults we are not aware of. The One who is called is ashammed to announce His name because of all the suffering in His world . The song is comfort for identifying our situation. Don't get me wrong there is a lot humor, laughter and beauty in the world that pushes back at the darkness

What is the other side? Is heaven some place you just stroll in like you have two tickets to the Superbowl? Or is some God given right? Think again. Hell is our natural destiny as we live in a fallen world. By our own choices to reject God. Only if you die in a state of sanctifying grace by faithfully receiving the sacraments of our Lord's Holy Bride..the one, holy and apostolic catholic church..can you be saved. This is the blueprint that God left us. Every other path is error. There can only be one way because there is only one truth.

And who by fire, who by water Who in the sunshine, who in the night time Who by high ordeal, who by common trial Who in your merry merry month of may Who by very slow decay And who shall I say is calling? And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt Who by avalanche, who by powder Who for his greed, who for his hunger And who shall I say is calling? And who by brave assent, who by accident Who in solitude, who in this mirror Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand Who in mortal chains, who in power And who shall I say is calling?

n this song, Leonard Cohen plays with a very important Hebrew Prayer from Rosh Hashana , the Jewish New Year in September. On Rosh Hashana God will decide who will live and who will die, who will die by fire and who will die by water, who by sword and who will die at his predestined time and who before his time who by famine and who by thirst. But repentance, prayer and charity remove the evil of the decree. 1

I thank you for the background information. It was about '89 i heard the song first time. After several years, i analysed the lyric, its meaning (for me). But all the time i didn't feel very comfortable with my 'analysis'. You closed the gap. It's the right time to hear this Song, do you agree? B.t.w., may i propose/recommend you to listen to the version/interpretation of the (GB) band "the coil" ? Greetings from Germany
