Jpol.

Regarding Leonard French's recommendation on "buying an OSI Layer-3 aware switch" (35:02): a layer-3 switch handles _routing,_ usually not particularly well, and is almost certainly *not* suitable for packet inspection. I think a DPI-capable *router* would be a much more appropriate. :) Not to be pedantic, but if you're going to drop packets at the protocol level, using the right tool for the job is not only prudent because of the difference in actual effectiveness, it can save you a lot of money too.
@duggerd4 жыл бұрын
A NGFW (Next Generation FireWall) is the current term for protocol aware firewall appliances. You _could_ use a L3 switch (or just do this at your edge router/firewall) and use ACLs to only allow UDP/53, TCP/80, TCP/443, etc but that's not 100% effective and would be a pain to manage.
@disenfranchisedliberal30734 жыл бұрын
@@duggerd Yep. Most BT clients for the last decade can easily evade L3 filters with the default settings, and even some L7 filters (aka NGFW). It can be blocked, but it's not as straightforward as with some other protocols. Probably close to impossible with an L3 _switch_ without also making your entire network unusable. That said, at least something with reasonably well implemented DPI could block or at least monitor a lot of it, so you might be able to call it due diligence.

The litigating dynamic duo! :)
@arterickson98093 жыл бұрын
Your definition of a harbourmaster is actually that of a “Pilot or Harbour Pilot”. The Harbourmaster sits in an office and oversees the assignation of anchoring points, docking, lading, refuelling and departures from port as well as all necessary port charges. He can prevent your ship from leaving harbour should your account be in arrears.

I used to use Bit Torrent. Don't know if they still do this, but they did have where you could pay them for movies and the like, and they paid out the royalties to the copyright owner. I used them to primarily for downloading Linux and freeware stuff. The idea behind it sounds good on paper, however, far too many people use it for illegal things, and there is also if someone has a virus on their computer, well now you got the virus, so I avoid those types of services.

Steve, your driver's license argument is valid, however I ask whether a similar provision to my Australian state of New South Wales exists anywhere in the USA. That is that in a life threatening situation neither the license or vehicle registration matters, I.E. in our current bushfire crisis if it is drive-able it gets put to work, if you can drive even suspended out you go.

Very enlightening and scary in light of family and friends that visit and we allow them to use our WiFi. Do any of us really know what others are doing with the keys to our stuff when we are not watching? Does having a guest WiFi access offer any protection?
@CatFish1073 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it's different terminology in the US, but in most other parts of the world, the job being described by Leonard is not the "harbour master", but more the "pilot" or "coastal pilot".

How could I, as an owner of an internet connection, be held accountable of the traffic or have the expertise to understand the traffic which is going through the connection? Nobody does that. And if someone can, how come are not the internet service providers sued instead if they are able to detect illegal activity and do nothing about it?
