@@gregoryclemen1870 But they weren't married at the time. Gene was still married to his first wife throughout the run of Star Trek, while having affairs with Majel and Nichelle Nichols. He only married Majel after Star Trek ended (but still continued to see other women on the side).

My knee-jerk reaction is to conclude that the role of Spock grossly underutilized his skill. However, I get the impression before even reading the autobios that it was difficult for him to play.

Nah, Spock was the greatest role of his life. It's easy to be a boisterous character like this one. But to play the half-human, half-Vulcan who struggles with his identity was a wholly original challenge in acting and he did it. Spock became an icon.
