Do not stand at my gave and weep I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight On the ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn’s rain.When you awaken in the morning hush, I am the swift uplifting rushof quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry. I am not there. I did not die.My Spirit is still alive…

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human. It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence. "Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability. The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith. The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human

So long, Leonard.

Now, I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Now maybe there's a god above But all I've ever learned from love Was how to shoot someone who'd out drew ya And it's not a cry that you hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah (instrumental) Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Oh people, I've been here before. I know this room, I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew ya. Yeah I've seen your flag on the marble arch, But listen, love is not some kind of victory march, No it's a cold and it's a very broken Hallelujah. Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah There was a time you let me know What's really going on below, Ah but now you never show it to me, do ya? Yeah but I remember, yeah when I moved in you, And the holy dove, she was moving too, Yes every single breath that we drew was Hallelujah. Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I learned to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the lord of song With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah

The world has lost giant, a genius, and a fine man. Leonard Cohen, aged 82 passed away, apparently today. He was best known as a composer, but also wrote novels and numerous poetry collections. Most people will remember him popularly as the composer of this song, "Hallelujah", covered by many artists, and used in a number of popular films, including "Shrek", "Meet Joe Black", and television's "E.R.". For me, music I've enjoyed by a particular artist evokes the fond memories that come with the memory of that person, or others you enjoyed the music with, Leonard Cohen's rendition of "Hallelujah" with over 41 million views, a very popular rendition. Rest in peace and Shalom, Mr. Cohen, your music made me think of you as a friend, though we never met. You will live on in the memories of millions of people. The memory of you will be as a blessing for many.

I doubt Leonard Cohen would be anything other than amused by all the debate about Judaism vs. Christianity. I think his great genius as a poet is the way in which he combines the religious and the secular in his metaphors and images. This "metaphysical" (ref. 17th century poets like John Donne) integration of the sacred and the profane relies first of all on his really intimate knowledge of the Hebrew bible. I have been a Cohen fan for as long as he's been around and I still am. Read some of the very early poems. Just brilliant. If you haven't watched k.d. lang singing this one, with him in the audience, I recommend it. Thank you, Mr. Leonard Cohen.

I'm not a religious person, so I don't think I like or dislike someone based on that. I like Leonard because of the way he uses words. And, well, he has a great voice...

100% agree. His words are wonderful. Who knows (or cares) what his religious beliefs are? But he is steeped in a tradition that values words and learning and has provided him with a bottomless supply of images which he uses to their best advantage. And I love his voice.
@gregorsamsa92648 жыл бұрын
+Joe Martin It has a great deal of religious connotations. The opening is a description of King David writing psalms, the second verse has references to both David and Samson, and the line "Lord of Song" has very clear religious imagery behind it.

His original version in 1984 sounds different, but he kept working with it and found the song in time. This version is my favorite and better than the hundreds of covers that have been made. I believe most of those performers don't understand the real meaning. Leonard said this isn't a joyful song, but it comes from a sadder place with a certain amount of resilience to still rejoice even when the spirit is broken.

Today, my uncle died. now how is this even relevant to L. Cohen? Leonard Cohen was his favorite singer. He had grown up in the hippy era, saw the rise of metal, the apparition of Edm, and many more. But none of these genres brought him to a blissful joy like Leonard Cohen did, when he discovered him a few years ago, following his stroke. He had become a frail man after that incident, but Cohen's music gave him so much joy in his painful life. he introduced me to Leonard Cohen, and now that he's gone, I now realise the amazing work this singer does. Thank you uncle Michel, thank you for everything and especially, thank you for making me rediscover Leonard Cohen.

Exactly. Cohen didn't have best voice ever. His voice was very imperfect. But he was singing really emotionally and deep - that made awesome effect! In my opinion - there is no cover better than that song, even if cover is sung technically better! :D

There are very few male vocalists who can give me goosebumps not to mention tears to my eyes. That in my opinion is the mark of a true singer. What one must do is determine for oneself what constitutes a "good voice". It's not just technical ability, it is primarily where that voice is coming from.

@wintherr35278 жыл бұрын
This song is particularly difficult to cover. This is not a typical standard song, with generic lyrics which can be sung by anyone with a generic Sinatra-like voice. THIS IS NOT POP MUSIC, even though this song is the closest to a popular hit song Leo has ever had. So, I'm not surprised at all by the tendecy to interpret this song as a religious track. In this way, the song becomes easier for the artist to sing and easier to digest by the audience.

I often spend hours listening to my old friend, Leonard Cohen, his songs that deeply move me. I have followed his epic journey of inspiration all my life and I cannot convey what he means to me. I hope he does not mind me saying so, and I am sure he has contemplated this himself, he his getting on now and when his time comes to face his maker (although I am not sure if he believes in one) this will be a very sad day, as I will have lost one of my closest friends and a brother in spirit. I have no idea how we will all get on without him touching our lives, our souls and our hearts. On that day I shall hold a vigil in honour of a great, truly great man. Thank you Leonard for all that you have made me feel in my life, for indeed you have made me get in touch with myself in a profound and special way. I am not ashamed to say that I love you as my own brother as I love my son Elliott. Please listen to this song and understand what he is saying to us all, we all need someone to love.

A person really dies when the last person to ever speak their name dies. For Leonard it may be never.

Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. Psalm 147:5 ✝🌅 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:7 ✝🌅 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 ✝🌅
