Climbing beyond 8-9% gets painful real quick, even on lowest gear on my MTB. Below that, it's about finding a suitable rythm, keeping cadence high to relieve strain on knees, varying gears as the steepness naturally varies. At some point, my mind too starts creating ever more compelling reasons to stop. I pushed a bit too hard yesterday, and felt a real longing for the summit and the bite of chocolate and water I was going for.

I also found the riders on Mallorca to be universally friendly and helpful. Short anecdote: After returning from Sa Calobra back to Pollensa, I'd been chasing my son (we had matching club kit) for a few miles but he hooked up with a pair of junior riders and were gunning it. I'd had enough, and as we were nearing home I sat up and let them go off. Next thing, I felt a hand on my back and a Spanish rider pushed me back onto the group before departing with a cheery wave. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I was turning off half a mile further up, but I still very much appreciated the gesture. Likewise, on every tough climb we did, riders that passed me (sad to say, there were more than a few!) all gave a friendly hello and often a few words of encouragement as they went by. It cannot be understated how much this helps to revive flagging legs, especially on some of the longer climbs, and I never stopping being enchanted by it. Can't wait to return!

You mate are an inspiration. The things you achieve just by going out and riding your bike. None of this 'you've got to have the latest kit/gear' or a 10k bike. Just with good old enjoyment the achievements will come. You've certainly inspired me to get back on the bike after a long lay off & sign up for an event ride. Not to win or get a fast time (it's a charity ride) but to just get out there, enjoy it & have the sense of achievement that comes with just doing it. Thanks mate & no doubt I'm not the only person you've inspired with your channel 🖤

Well done Leonard… that is no mean feat. I did it last year and even the descent was outside of my comfort zone. The ascent was a slog and a couple of parts touch 10% and are especially steep. I did Puig mayor this year, 5kg heavier at 102kg and it took everything I had to get up. So I can associate with the nerves and above all the mental strength needed to get up there. I thought I was an intermediate cyclist and was humbled by SA Calobra. You’ve inspired me to try it again next year

Well done mate! Not only this is like a dream come true, but also it is like fighting with your own weaknesses. I hate climbs of any sort. A major problem with me climbing is when the climb is pretty long, I have problems with my lower back. On a 9-10km climb I've once had, half way through I had to stop for a short brake, and then I've felt terrible pain. Well it has gone away a bit later when I've moved around with my body and stretched out too. For me there is only one reason to do such a climb, to see the wonderful view from the top :) All the best for you!

Chapeaux Leonard, you have slain the dragon. I know a bit of how you feel having just come back from Girona and ridden Rocacorba. The ride from Girona was a 57.75 mile loop out to Banyolls and back with 5100ft of climbing and a moving time of 5hrs 18 minutes. The actual Rocacorba climb itself is 6.17 miles with 2410ft of climbing and took 1hr 33 minutes. Your climb looked a lot more scenic as Rocacorba is wooded so basically all you see is the road going up in front of you and trees…..
