Control Denied was not only a side project, it was the band Chuck meant to continue with, playing 'not so heavy/death metal' stuff with another vocalist, Death's former bassis Steve Di Giorgio and Death's final line-up drummer and guitarist. I read somewhere that indeed some music from 'The Sound of Perseverance' was originally written for Control Denied.

The abrupt 180° changes in good metal is one of the most satisfying parts of it all, pop songs are like a kiddy "rollercoaster" ride, music that focuses on skill and technical creativity and breaking anticipation is what makes it feel so fun to not have expected what you're gonna hear next, all within the confines of understanding what people mean when they say a lot of metal sounds the same. Technical musicians in metal remind me so much of the intricate wordsmithing and fast frantic precise rhythmic flows rappers have, it feels like I love hip hop artists like Busta Rhymes and Tech N9ne and Eminem and jazz bands like Snarky Puppy and anything fast and technical for the same reasons I love metal so much, fast technical music for music-heads is just so satisfying to me. I appreciate the intense musical effort and ride of controlled chaos.
