==►Leonberger proviene dalla città di Leonberg, nell'attuale Baden-Württemberg, in Germania.
Heinrich Essig, il fondatore della razza, era consigliere comunale di Leonberg e la leggenda narra che volesse un cane che assomigliasse a un leone sullo stemma della città.
Leonberger ha un doppio strato che deve essere spazzolato regolarmente per controllare lo spargimento.
Il Leonberger è più strettamente imparentato con i San Bernardo e, in misura minore, con i Terranova Landseer e i cani da montagna dei Pirenei.
I Leonberger sono dimorfici, il che significa che i maschi dovrebbero apparire chiaramente più mascolini e più grandi delle femmine.
Leonberger può essere un cane da terapia eccezionale.
