My first encounter with Kogan was, when I - still a teenager - purchased his recording of Paganini's Concerto #1. He seemed to be a class of his own, glowing G-string sound, magic and glittering virtuosity, elegance and phrasing just breathtaking. Later I came across other Kogan recordings, all wonderful, especially virtuoso pieces like Sarasate's Zapateado. He was one of my heroes though there were also others like Gitlis, Rosand, later Perlman, Kremer and so on. Much later, while I lived in Denmark for some years, happened something very strange. At that time I had a long way to work and wanted one particular day to take another route, just for the sake of variety. When I passed through the Danish provincial town of Viborg I didn't trust my eyes. I saw Kogan walking along the main road. I was struck and investigated wether there was a concert with him to take place that very night. And it was! I got myself a ticket and saw the famous man come on stage. But he was looking somewhat ill, at least he seemed to be not completely at ease. Was that the reason why he had chosen a total program dedicated to 4 of Bach's sonatas for violin and harpsichord? Though I think there is nothing like Bach, from the violinistic point of few the program was rather disappointing. He seemed to be a shadow of that young man who once had given the world some of the most glorious recordings ever, recordings that will guarantee him a place in the violinistic firmament for ever. Not too long after that unforgettable experience one could read about the death of that unic hero of the violin. He reached no more than 58 years, just lile Paganini did.

Wieniawski's genius must have been off the charts. Not only to play the unplayable (almost), but to write it in the first place....and Kogan, the master, who brings it from the past and plays it to us. Who else?

Kogan was always dazzling; it is a shame that almost all of his performances are known only through recordings; that damned Iron Curtain was such a barrier. One can only wonder what magic he could have made here in the U.S. if he had been able to travel more. This Fantasie is so rarely heard anymore, so it is delight to hear it here, and performed so beautifully . Bravo!

It is speechless performance as all of his:) In fact it has been a problem for many musicians and continue being a damned barrier , as for musicians it is yet a very expensive to travel and not affordable. Regarding the program, recently every body try to play what is a little bit demanded by public and recognizable. Although we all try to bring more and other compositions as there is so many dazzling music of slavic composers, but yet for many if that is not Vivaldi is difficult to listen. So primitive goes world.

Leonid Kogan was the face of Soviet art and has always been loyal to the Soviet regime; that's why he could travel a lot unlike other Soviet maestros.

As a non-musician, you happen to be in a set that also contains anyone who has hit dislike on Kogan. But for having hit like you can consider yourself an honorary musician.
