This was in Helsinki - I was there in the audience when it happened! :)

Sasha... what happened exactly - did the string just suddenly go out of tune?
@Varakarajan11 жыл бұрын
Mike Blackstock He conducted the introduction himself as there was no conductor. And during that time the string had quietly slipped - he had no time to check it before the first note.

This is not only the E-string...also the A-string, and maybe D as well. This is a unique experience, for the violinist and for the audience. Strikes me that people start to laugh. This string malfunction is so embarrassing for the soloist.

This is actually quite normal. Rare, but normal. Everything normal, especially if accidental should not be criticized; that is the matter of proper education, basic intelligence and good manners.

@uMpzZ26e032 жыл бұрын
@@pastrocchio90 @pastrocchio90 Almost everybody opsesively talking about strings, which string failed, breaking strings as if that never happened to themselves. BTW Leonidas is fantastic performer. I enjoyed his sound in this video also. That is what counts.

@@uMpzZ26e03 I think you misunderstood the comments. Nobody is criticizing Kavakos here.

The pegs go into a tapered hole, this means a peg must be pressed in while turning it for tuning, a basic but understandable design flaw in an old instrument. Changing to a modern machine head design like Yamaha does, would be better.
@PaperGrape4 жыл бұрын
Yes, and you have to involve a mechanical design that when it breaks means you might have to break the scroll to get them out. A chance not worth taking on fine old instruments. Well tapered pegs are a joy and very rarely slip. Few common people have experienced truly well-fit pegs.
@geoden4 жыл бұрын
@@PaperGrape The old pegs were designed at a time when techniques weren't nearly so advanced and high quality ebony was not as expensive as it is now. The old time craftsmen were quality conscious not cost conscious as they are forced to be now.
@PaperGrape4 жыл бұрын
@@geoden i don't understand your point. We were never talking abouy quality or cost, but about different pegs. The old masters clearly made the highest possible quality instruments in every way, materials was not an issue,which is why their gold standards remain
