you do realize that there were like 4-6k greeks at the battle of Thermopylae, its true that on the final day there were less than a thousand greeks (there were the 300 spartans and 3-4 hundred warriors from other city states, mainly Thebes IIRC) but still...

My understanding is that when the Spartans came they sent everybody home except the Thebans. There was one battle where the Thebens actually beat the Spartans! (They cheated- used tactics rather han brute strength.) if this happened before the battle of Thermpylae, the Spartans may have respected the Thebans as fellow professionals.
