One of the best demos I've ever seen. It made me reassess a pedal that, while I never hated it, I've never loved it either, so I've never owned one. Now I'm thinking of getting one. This may be the pedal I needed all along. I need an overdrive pedal with a lot of flexibility, not because I play dark metal (I don't) but for the style I play, which runs the gamut from classic rock to mid 80s traditional metal tones, I can see a place for this pedal. Also, a friend, a great blues player with several albums to his credit, has used a Metal Zone as a lead boost since 1993 and it always worked great for him.

Can we all just acknowlage that it just sounds cool? There are plenty of good tones there, if the player just understands the pedal, the knobs and such. Going for extreme settings will make it sound like garbage, sure, but not a lot of pedals have usable sounds throughout all the range of the knobs. Bottom line: if it sounds like shit, maybe (just maybe) the problem is the person with the guitar, not the gear.

Agree, and can use it in front of the amp (Loop only for modulation). Usually problem is the Middle section. Middle on noon, search the frequence you like with middle range, then do the fine tune with middle knob... works well for me. the rest is easy

Hey Leon good demo of this little black box. My favourite tone was the neck pickup on your YJM Strat. I could listen to that tone for days! Always curious about this Boss product...never owned or used one but i can see how it could be integrated into a board quite practically. I like thats its a bit different from a lot of distortion boxes....certainly has a character all its own. Thanks mate, good job.

Many years ago in my 1st band i used one. I played a srv srat back then tuned a half step down. We did alot of Alice n chains type stuff. I always got compliments on my tone. Its all in how you set it up and use it. Now I just go through what ever amp Im useing. If I have to use a pedal which Ive had to when we play a casino gig and I have to use an old fender amp with no overdrive. Ill use a blues driver or maybe a ds1.

That's weird, I tried the original Metal-zone myself in front of a Marshall DSL 40 and in the fx loop... sounded way better in the front. Sounded nothing like in this video, it had a lot of bass and good aggressive gain, a bit too much treble for my liking however, but awesome pedal.

Two things which became immediately apparent is that the standard mode sounded great in a mix (possibly if like me you grew up on '90s metal) and the custom mode into a dirty amp sounded very "Swedish" i.e. reminiscent of the HM-2.

I really liked the custom mode into a dirty amp. Hopefully an HM2w is next

With the Custom mode being with all settings cranked, a la Entombed. I've been listening back to some of the David Gilmour stuff did when he used the HM-2 (A Momentary Lack of Reason and About Face) and it's not as ugly as I remember.

I’m a metal guy but the only time this pedal sounded good in this demo imo was when Leon used it for blues tones with his Fender YJM strat. Back in the day, I think the Zoom Tri Metal might have been the best high gain distortion pedal. These days there is a plethora of choices, MI Audio Megalith Delta, Revv G3 & G4, Diezel VH4, VH4-2 & Herbert, Engl, KSR Ceres, Amptweaker Tight Metal series, MXR EVH 5150, Wampler Pinnacle series, Friedman BE-OD pedal, Empress Effects Multidrive & Heavy, Airis Effects Savage Drive, Horizon Devices Precision Drive & Apex Preamp, etc. Yes, most of these are preamp pedals vs straight distortion pedals but have far better tone imo or you could just buy a modeller or multi-fx pedal and have tons of options and craft your own presets if you need multiple tones at the press of a switch.

There is one thing that pretty much everyone misses with the Metal Zone and why they say it sounds like crap is that it's a "pre-amp". You need to run it to the effect return on your amp, not staright in the front end.

Mostly awful with a few good sounds. The background noise on the heaviest settings are too much. Sounded like a chainsaw was cutting a tree down behind the guitar amp. Still sounds like total dog shit in front of a clean amp. This pedal was not designed originally as a pedal, I'm sure of it. I bet it was designed as a preamp, but they were out of style, so Boss released it as a distortion pedal instead. Now it's 2019, people have tried it how it was intended, and realize it is rather decent.

Perhaps you need to evaluate the other gear in your signal chain. Something is definitely screwing the tone. Also, who the hell cares about aesthetics? Lastly, you have duplicated video in the middle section of the video. Oops!
