After watching this video and digging up all the info I could on History guitars online, I just got a GH-LC, which seems to be the immediate predecessor to this model. A lot of the specs seem to be the same, but there are a few key differences like split inlays (mother of pearl or pearloid with what looks like a thin strip of abalone) and different pickups. (Mine apparently has Louis pickups with alnico 3 magnets, while later models usually seem to have hotter ceramic magnet pickups.) Like you mentioned regarding this guitar, I noticed that the frets on mine are a bit on the small side; and the pickups are good but not great in my opinion. But I'm loving that guitar, and it seems like both models are a damn good deal for the money- if you can still find them.

I’m the lucky owner of the same guitar. Absolutely awesome guitar!!! I sold a Gibson (studio) that I could not bond with and got this for less money. It eats the Gibson studio for breakfast lunch and dinner, hands down!

I looked at the specs for this guitar in the History Catalog (Which is in Japanese) and it is an absolute dream come true! Timeless Timber hard maple cap (timeless timber comes from logs of maple that are 75-240 years old. Honduran mahogany back, sides and neck, ebony fingerboard, set neck join, vitamin Q capacitors, and 14 degree head angle. This specs are what you would ask if you were making a custom guitar worth a lot more than these guitars. The other model that is amazing, is the sister of this guitar: the History GH-LS which has the specs of a 59 burst Les Paul including the 18 degree head angle. The amazing thing is that FGN really knows how to build Les Pauls. The best examples of the Law Suit era were made by FGN. These History guitars have got to be the most under valued Les Paul replicas that can be found anywhere. Many people looking for proper copies of Les Pauls look to Greco, Burny and others. But these History guitars are contemporary classics.

Thank you for introducing this guitar! In Japan, the retail stores(島村楽器/Shimamura-Gakki) that handle this guitar were badly sold and the brand image was bad, But it seems that the guitar itself needs to be reconsidered.It's a good guitar!

That CFS means that the frets are slightly concave to compensate for the angle the strings create from the difference between the strings on the nut and the bridge. if that makes any sense to you, not a native english speaker x)

@@LeonTodd They're more cleanly and accurately made than any of the tokai stuff short of the 200+ level (which isn't seen much in the US). I have the same guitar as this video - it does have relatively low frets - easy playing, smooth - but the frets are a bit low for ripping.

Overall it looks great, but for a US grand they should have used aged inlays to match the binding. Or, used white binding to match the inlays. Having them mixed seems like they just reached over and grabbed whatever was closest to them and went with it. That's fine for US $500 dollar, but not 1K.
@daw162

The inlays aren't celluloid to age/yellow. The shell. Shell is always white (and a step up - harder, no shrink).

It's one of the more obscure MIJ brands that makes copies of the American guitars. I think it's been around for a while. Japanese guitars are the best bang-for-buck available in these styles. I have a Tokai LS150 (now an LS200 with inflation) and it's by far my best electric. Better made and more vintage correct than my two Gibsons. Basically an R8 at under half the price. Devisor of course makes some incredible copies under the Momose and Bacchus brands.

It's propably a rebranded (old style) FGN LC - they had to change the cutaway on the newer models and this one seems like it's for the japanese domestic market. The CFS system (as mentioned on the trussrodcover) is actually something FGN introduced with this series.

Tokai can be hit or miss. I had a LS160 with a neck flaw that wasn't recoverable for less than the guitar was worth with the dud neck, and a ES170 (kurozawa model, I think?) that was satin finished top front that had the bridge way off center. HLS240 was great (but even at that price level, the top was a veneer - wonderfully made) and two good HLS160s. I think the H guitars (hibiki?) are much better. Oh, and SG185 - before they couldn't get them made in all mahogany at that price level. Slightly tubbier than gibson SG with a fat neck - better than any SG I've ever played. Only have one history - it's about as well made as the HLS240 (very well) but sounds chambered. Workmanship is top notch, though - $1050 from ishibashi plus shipping (ouch - EMS isn't up these days). Not uncommon to see 160 to 192 numbered tokai LS guitars on ishibashi for $700-$900. They're good guitars at that. Gibson is out for me. Odds of a guitar being good only as good as tokai regular stuff, poor stability in the first decade (and probably beyond - why bother with plek of the guitar will snake all over the place over the next ten years), and the price is 2-3 times the tokai and history stuff.
